I'm happy about the new attraction. Love Mickey Mouse, he needs to be around more...... but!! they are using the new awful styling on Mickey instead of the classic styling. Hate that part!!

This is untrue.  The witch animatronic has broken and imagineers are fixing it with the clever placement of strobe lights.

Please tell me they aren't simply doing an overlay of Ellen for a Guardians ride at Epcot, right?  That would be the slowest, longest "thrill" ride ever.  LOL.  More like Guardians of the Nursing Home

Skip to 3:00 if you want his take on this specifically.

But I'm still chalking this up to rumor. His rationale that it's happening because TCM contract is ending doesn't seem to hold water. re: ToT and that partnership ending... there's been no rumbling at all yet about retheming ToT at HS, even though it's already under way at DL. You'd think if they're doing a Guardians overlay there, FL would get it eventually too, and yet the Guardians overlay in FL is slated for Ellen at Epcot.  Also the TCM contract is new-ish and the only thing different before it was the pre-show movie.

But this rumor has a lot of traction out there so we'll see.  D23 is coming up - maybe there will be some news coming out of that.

Two things

You have to be a glutton for punishment to actually last up to the 3 minute mark listening to this guys accent. It was painful, especially when he had nothing new to say.

Can Disney do Marvel in Florida?  Is Guardians not part of the Universal portfolio east of the Mississippi?

It depends upon how the contract is written. It wouldn't surprise me that it is limited in some way to be specific character properties. This would have allowed Marvel to negotiate for more money on newer releases.

This is all very interesting conjecture. Thanks for sharing.

While being excited what new things there will be to explore, it's tough to dismiss all the great memories from the rides with their futures uncertain.

Good point.  I found this article...

By now, it’s pretty much common knowledge that the reason why Disney hasn’t cashed in on the billion-dollar Marvel franchise at Walt Disney World is because of a pesky little contract signed in the 1990s (which you can read yourself here) that allows Universal to have exclusive rights to the Marvel characters east of the Mississippi river.

...Here’s a very important item in the official contract:

East or West of The Mississippi – permitted uses shall be limited to the use of specific Marvel characters and Marvel may not permit a licensee to use the name “Marvel” as part of the attraction name or marketing.

...Under the current contract with Universal, Marvel characters that are not being used inside Islands of Adventure are allowed to be used east of the Mississippi in theme park attractions.

That last bit is interesting because it leaves Guardians up for grabs.

Full article with lots more details, including the actual contract language...

This is also another article about the permits that were filed.

We previously reported that the future of the Great Movie Ride was in question. Per permits obtained by Blog Mickey, it appears that the Great Movie Ride at Hollywood Studios will be closing to make room for “DHS Project M.” We also saw this tweet on Twitter:

Hearing Great Movie Ride will close for a Mickey attraction.

Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon, and by Summer 2018.

So what does “DHS Project M” mean? From what we are hearing, this will be a new Mickey Mouse-themed ride. So, “DHS” refers to Disney’s Hollywood Studios and “Project M” means Project Mickey Ride? A Mickey-themed ride would be a first for any of the Disney Parks.

As you can see on copies of the permit below, the exact address of the Great Movie Ride is listed. Also important to point out is the completion date of October 31, 2019. It’s hard to be sure if this date is the projected opening day of this new attraction or just the completion date of work detailed in this permit.

Of course, nothing is official until Disney confirms it. Hopefully, with D23 Expo coming up this weekend, we will receive the official word one way or another. With rumors of the Great Movie Ride closing, talk about a Mickey-themed ride coming, and now a permit filed, I’d expect to see this rumor come to fruition.

Apparently M stands for Mickey.  Here is the latest.

We told you about this one a while ago, but it now sounds like it may be happening and announced at the 2017 D23 Expo on Saturday July 15th…

From our August 2016 story:

While details are scarce at this point, rumors indicate the ride would be trackless and is also being developed to go somewhere at the Disneyland Resort simultaneously.

The latest trend in the parks seems to be Disney removing any connections to franchises that Disney does not own (Twilight Zone for example), and the Great Movie Ride is packed with a lot of films that Disney has absolutely no ownership over. The line of thinking here would be to feature the first ride ever devoted to Mickey Mouse (clearly the property of the Walt Disney Company), something that has been attempted many times over the last 60 years but never built in any Disney theme park.

Sources are claiming that the Great Movie Ride would close in 2018 so that “The Great Mickey Ride” could open by the 50th anniversary of Walt Disney World in 2021.

Here is the story also from the Walt Disney World Blog as well:

A new attraction featuring international icon Mickey Mouse is coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios at the Walt Disney World Resort! Details for our first Mickey-themed ride-through attraction, Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway, were just unveiled during the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts presentation at D23 Expo 2017 – and we think you’re going to love it.

On Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway, you’ll step through the movie screen and join Mickey and his friends like never before. The attraction will put you inside the wacky and unpredictable world of a Mickey Mouse Cartoon Short where you’re the star and anything can happen. This zany out-of-control adventure features surprising twists and turns, dazzling visual effects and mind-boggling transformations that happen before your very eyes.

The attraction is inspired by the Mickey Shorts that you can see on the Disney Channel. And the people who bring you the shorts at Disney Television Animation are partnering with us to help bring the attraction to life.

Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway will feature a new story and a new singable attraction theme song as well as a new experience we’re calling “2 1/2 D.” No glasses required. Walt Disney Imagineer Kevin Rafferty said teams are inventing new technologies that turn the flat world of a colorful cartoon short into a “dimensional display of amazingness.”

“This is one of the boldest…most impossible things I’ve ever worked on in almost 40 years of being an Imagineer. And you know what? That’s what I love about it. Well, that, and Mickey,” Kevin said. “This is not going to be a small attraction, it’s going to be game-changing.”

As you plan ahead, we also wanted to let you know that in order to begin to prepare the new home of Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway at the Chinese Theatre in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, August 13, 2017 will be the final day of operation for The Great Movie Ride presented by Turner Classic Movies. Until August 13, you can still relive some of the greatest movie moments in history on the Great Movie Ride attraction.

Keep checking the Disney Parks Blog for future updates on the Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway.
