Steve Whitmire, who has been the voice of Kermit the Frog since the 90’s is stepping down according to a Muppet Studio spokeswoman who spoke to The Hollywood Reporter.

Kermit was originally voiced by Jim Henson with Whitmire taking on the role after Henson passed away in 1990. Whitmire first started working with the Muppets back in the 1978  and can be heard as the voice of several much-loved characters including Beaker and Rizzo the Rat. Little information is being given concerning the reasons for his departure.

Hi replacement will be Matt Vogel who has been with the Muppets since 1996 and has voiced various roles including Constantine in Muppets Most Wanted.

Vogel will try on the role of Kermit the Frog for the first time next week in a “Muppets Thought of the Week” video according to the spokeswoman.
