Can Someone Please Talk Me Through Trick or Treating and Halloween?

Recommended Posts

We are extremely excited that a 7-year dream of hauling our camper down to the Fort will finally come to fruition over Halloween this fall (with our kids - 12, 11 and 8).  With this in mind, however, I'm looking far any tips and tricks I can get about Halloween...

  • How much candy should we bring along (I've been reading horror stories about all of the non FW guests and locals crashing the events)?
  • Is it the general practice that one parent stays back to distribute while the other escorts the kids?
  • Do we need to line up early to be able to see the cart parade?
  • Are there any other tips or tricks you might suggest?

This is, quite possibly, the only camping trip our clan will ever take to Disney (we are DVC, and the 1,250 mile haul is just too time-consuming), so we want to make the most of it.

Thank you!

Don't stress!! Buy as much candy as you are comfortable with, give it out, and when it's gone, don't worry. Do the trick or treating any way you like. If one of you wants to stay behind and give out candy while the others go out, great. If you want to get out early for a bit of time, then spend the rest of the evening at your camper giving out candy, great!! It's YOUR evening, YOUR vacation, enjoy!

We usually have a premium campsite near the main drag, so we just grab a couple of chairs, by the side of the main road, and sit down and enjoy the parade. There is lots of room to watch the golf cart parade between the 4-way stop, and the 3-way stop.

Thanks for the info, everyone - we are looking forward to it.  Hopefully we can meet some Fiends along the way!

Excellent advice!

In the past we've brought about 30-40 lbs (I stock up when it's on sale or at BJs) and some years we've run out.  A lot depends on what loop you end up in.  Those closer to the Settlement/marina can tend to get more people than the ones further away.

But definitely don't feel like you need to stay behind to hand out candy if you both want to enjoy the trick or treating with your kids!  There are plenty of people handing out plenty of candy.  Go have fun and enjoy the evening whichever way you like.

You will probably also find a "gathering of FIENDS" on one site handing out candy together.

Always a fun time!

If you do decide to hand out candy something I never thought about at home or actually till I joined FF is having an allergy friendly option. We had some throw beads left over from a parade we did so I took those as well as some candy that was gluten, nut, and milk free. Of course this is completely optional and like I said nothing I had thought about before joining here and finding out that there would be little Fiends with allergies trick or treating.

Our last visit for Halloween, our son was 9. He started out trick-or-treating through 3 loops. He quickly saw that he was traveling with the same group of kids, moving in one blob. He decided he would rather go back to the camp site and give out candy, so that he could see many more kids in their costumes. He had way more fun passing out candy than he did while trick-or treating. So much so that he emptied his treat bag into the bowl to pass out to trick-or-treaters. Keep that in mind.

Be sure and stick to one piece of candy per child. Do not just hold out a bowl and let the kids grab. My wife loves to keep doggy treats to pass out for the four legged fiends and also a small plush baby toy for the wee ones. Those two things have been major hits.

Mainly just relax and have fun. Hopefully we will see you then. We will be somewhere at the Fort for the whole week.

Post a photo of a teal pumpkin in a bright and prominent area of your camp if you are intending to have special allergy free selections. More families are beginning to recognize and look for this  symbol  :)

I usually have a couple painted teal pumpkins at the corner.

It's called The Teal Pumpkin Project. My kids are super lucky, but I try to give this group a shout out every year to raise awareness.
