'Hocus Pocus' TV Movie Remake in the Works at Disney Channel

David Kirschner, who produced the 1993 Bette Midler movie, is attached to the remake.

Hocus Pocus is eyeing a comeback.

Disney Channel is developing a TV movie remake of the 1993 Bette Midler Halloween film, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

The current iteration, which will center on a new story and new characters, hails from writer Scarlett Lacey (The Royals) and executive producer David Kirschner, who produced the original film and who co-wrote the story on which the film is based.

Also starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy, Hocus Pocuscenters on three witches from Salem, Mass., who are hanged to death after killing a young child. However, because of a spell, they are brought back from the dead 300 years later, in 1993. Kenny Ortega (High School Musical) directed the film but is not attached to the remake.

Although the film only grossed $39 million at the box office, it has gone on to become a cult favorite thanks to repeat airings around Halloween on Freeform (formerly ABC Family) as well as Disney Channel. The film has remained popular over the years. In 2016, composer John Debney debuted a new Hocus Pocus overture at the El Capitan in Hollywood, and Midler made headlines when she dressed as her character from the film for Halloween.

While Midler had rebuffed the idea of a possible sequel, Parker was more open to the idea when she was asked about it on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen in 2016. "I would love that," she said. "I think we've all been fairly vocal about being very keen, but that hasn't created any groundswell of movement."
