Wheelchair/Scooter/ECV Rentals

If anyone has any other first-hand experience renting an ECV - either from Disney or off-site - please PM the information to BradyBzLyn12.

Thanks!

===================

UPDATE 08/22/16:

Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach are no longer providing free wheelchair use.  Similar to the other 4 Disney theme parks, both water parks will now have wheelchair rentals available for $12/day with a $100 refundable deposit.

===================

UPDATE 03/13:

There are now 5 offsite ECV rental companies that are considered featured providers by Disney: Apple Scooter. Best Price Mobility, Buena Vista Scooter Rentals, Care Medical Equipment, and Scooter Bug.

Disney has indicated that these vendors meet their guidelines, among which is sufficient attachment points to safely secure the ECVs on the buses.

In addition, these will be the ONLY offsite vendors allowed to drop off and pick up scooters from Disney Resort Bell Services without the Guest/renter being present to receive delivery of the scooter. All other vendors will have to schedule a specific pick up/drop off time when the Guest is present.

===================

Some general notes/recommendations on scooters/ECVs from fellow Fort Fiends:

"Another option folks may want to check into is renting from a local medical equipment place in their hometown. We have done that also, and since we don't live in a tourist town it was significantly less!!! (An entire week for $80). If you are driving and have the means to transport it, it can save you a bundle!! Also, airlines will transport them for free!!!

Also, a warning that the "Dream Scooter" is too big for Disney buses would be appropriate."

For more reviews and info posted by Fort Fiends that have used the companies listed below, please see THIS THREAD on the FortFiends.net message board.

  • Multi-Day (Length of Stay): $10 per day
Disney Springs
  • Daily: $12 (with $100 refundable deposit)

Length of Stay Rental
Pre-pay the number of days that you will require a wheelchair and save. Purchase a Length of Stay rental ticket for $10 per day when rented for multiple days. Then, upon visiting a theme park, simply show your receipt at the rental location to receive your wheelchair for the day.

Please note that Length of Stay rental tickets may not be offered during peak periods.

Requirements
Guests must be 18 years of age to rent wheelchairs. A photo ID is required. The maximum weight is 350 pounds. Wheelchairs are not designed to hold more than one person.

Reservations
Wheelchairs are available at the theme parks on a first-come, first-served basis. Wheelchairs may not be reserved and quantities are limited. Please plan to arrive early.

Guests are also invited to bring and use their own wheelchairs throughout Walt Disney World Resort.

Multi-Park Wheelchair Rentals
Wheelchairs cannot be removed from the theme park in which they were rented. When visiting more than one park per day, simply return your wheelchair to receive your deposit. Then, present your rental receipt at the second theme park to secure a replacement wheelchair, if available, at no additional charge.

You cannot take the wheelchair out of the park you rent it in or to your resort. If you plan to go from one park to another, you will need to return the chair to the first park and get a new one at the next park.

You pay the daily fee only once if you bring your receipt with you to the next park.

The number of wheel chairs is limited in each park and it is possible that if you arrive later in the day that they may not have a wheel chair available.

You cannot reserve wheel chair rentals in the Theme Parks.

WDW Resort Hotels (from the WDW website) - "A limited number of wheelchairs are available at each Disney Resort Hotel. Contact Guest Services or the Front Desk for assistance. A $315 USD deposit will be held on the Guest room account—charged only if the wheelchair is not returned. Guests wishing to guarantee the use of a wheelchair throughout their stay should contact local area rental companies to make arrangements."

More info from Fort Fiend member:

"The resorts have a limited amount of manual chairs to loan out for FREE for your entire stay. You just have to leave a CC # to guarantee it. There is no guarantee that there will be any when you get there, and no choice on what type you get. Often they are older ones left over from the parks, but it could work for some in a pinch. (For example if you rent an ECV in the parks, but need something to get to and from the buses and around the resort).

There are also a limited number of manual chairs out in the parking lots (near the accessible parking) to transport guests to the main entrance to the rental place. Usually all gone by mid morning though. They don't seem to return them very regularly to the corral."

Disney Featured Providers
In addition to wheelchair rentals locations throughout Walt Disney World Resort, several private companies in the local area also offer wheelchair rentals, as well as ECVs, strollers and other mobility product length-of-stay rentals.

Review of Apple Scooter from a Fort Fiend member:

"I did everything online and when I got to the Fort it was waiting for us at concierge. When we left, I just dropped it off where I got it, easy in and easy out. Had a basket in the front that carried our little cooler perfectly, and it came apart for easy transport if I needed to. I would definitely use them again, especially for the price alone. They were the cheapest I found in the area. Plus they were a little more compact than the other ones I saw around the park. The only problem is I wish they had a light for night time driving. They also offer 3 wheel and a deluxe scooter. FYI, the description on your charge card will be Big apple mobility NY, NY."
