  1. Checked in with my SIL in Jax Beach. I offered for them to come up and camp with us this weekend. She says it is too late.  I haven't really watched any TV today, so I don't know what the roads are like already.  I told her Ft. Wilderness wants everyone out by 11am tomorrow, and she said that might be too late. She is on a tidal creek off the intercoastal, and her daughter lives a couple of miles from the beach and was "evacuating" to her house. She says a lot of people there are skeptical about anything (boy who cried wolf syndrome).

Just bought gas in Columbia South Carolina (Oct 3, 2016) for 2.01 a gallon. No shortages that I can see.

My husband had to use regular the other day because the 2 stations around us were both still out of premium and mid.

I was wondering how SC was faring with gas after I heard the gov say to make sure your gas tank was full when you evacuating the coast.

I've lived here all my life and been through many hurricanes. When we lost power for a week in 2004 with hurricane Charlie, we came and hung out at Disney...bc they didn't lose power!  They're pretty prepared to handle most stuff.

We were staying in the Wilderness Lodge during Hurricane Jeanne the same year. My dad was concerned the whole time leading up to our departure, and I kept saying that a hurricane had already passed through Orlando, what were the odds another one would. Pretty darn good actually! We got there the day before the eye went through. We were confined to our rooms for 24 hours, though people started going to the lobby. Luckily we had adjoining rooms with my parents, so that gave us a little more room (my kids were 4 & 2 at the time).

The parks opened back the next day, and it was the most amazing visit ever - no crowds at all!

I've become allergic to alcohol.  1 drink with hard liquor and I will develop red blotches on my face.  2 beers, same thing.  Colognes and perfumes get me as well.  I also have trouble going into craft stores like Michaels as I had the same things happen to me as you did in Harbor Freight.  I've also noticed with the last month that working on my cars is starting to affect me.  Seems like 45 minutes into smelling one of the old cars I feel it.  Thankfully it hasn't got to me yet while driving them.  When that day comes, well we won't think of that yet.

The last couple of times I tried to drink wine, it made me really flushed on my face. I can drink ciders though no problem. My eye dr and dermatologist say I probably have rosacea, and alcohol can be a trigger of that.

Craft stores don't bother me, but I don't like to go into Bath & Body Works because I start sneezing and get congested right away.

The needing a grade different than what the owners manual specifies depends upon the vehicle. The 3.0L V6 in my old Mazda B3000 (aka Ford Ranger) was known to get carbon build up in the cylinder heads over time. This carbon buildup results in pre-ignition particularly in hot weather. Something like Sea Foam treatment run into the intake would help for some vehicles but the carbon would still build up over time. For mine all I did was run the mid-grade during the summer which took care of the pre-ignition for not too much more money.

I own a 71 Volvo 1800E that needs leaded, Ethanol free, 97 octane fuel. It is getting harder to find Ethanol free but it is still out there if you look hard enough. I don't live near a race track so there is nothing over 93 octane at the pumps. So these days I spend more time playing chemist at the pump to make up for the lack of lead and low octane than I do pumping the gas.

I am right near the speedway in Concord, and sure enough we have pumps that say racing fuel around.

BTW - my very first vehicle was a hand-me-down Mazda B2000. Had it for part of college (which is kind of a curse since you end up hauling everybody's stuff everywhere) and then for a year here in CLT. It wouldn't idle low enough to pass the emissions test so I gave it back to my dad in VA.

I ran into that on the way home from Ohio. I actually do put premium in my truck. It has made a difference.

We have one vehicle that takes premium and two that take regular. FTR, you're supposed to only use the grade your manual says. We had a friend who put premium in her Ford Explorer while the manual said regular, and after her it broke down the mechanic said it was due to using the premium gas.

ETA: Of course googling this shows it shouldn't damage your car but everything I saw says you're wasting money if your car doesn't say to use it.

We have a bunch of gas stations up here that a few years back just stopped carrying those grades. I think its just wasnt worth the purchase of it for them because so few of their customers were buying it.

Interesting. Pretty sure it is coming back here as they had signs printed and taped to the pumps. I don't remember what they said but it seemed temporary.

  8. On our cross country trip, we booked a site at a casino campground in Carson City, NV. We got there late (about 11pm). We were never, ever going to be able to get into the pull-through site we were assigned, due to people parked out in the road and boulders on both sides of the site.  The only other site available was a back-in right at the end, so they switched us to that. The night guy at the hotel was in charge, and he came out while we were trying to back into that. We would have eventually gotten in, but he could tell we were frustrated and told us to just park in their lower lot. He also said there was a city ordinance against overnighting in parking lots so he would make sure his security team knew he was allowing us to do it.

I thought it was funny that every other business there appeared to be a strip club or casino, yet heaven forbid an RV is in a parking lot. Makes more sense now knowing it is Big Campground behind these ordinances.

BTW, there was a smaller Class C parked in the main casino lot the whole time we were there. I think that casino closed at a fairly early time, so maybe they stayed in the hotel?

  9. Did our first real boondocking at VT this weekend. Had a great time. Glad we killed ECU. They have been known in the past to come from behind and beat us. It was blazing hot at the game. FYI - games in Lane Stadium are either super hot or the coldest you've ever been to in your life.

The worst part of the weekend was today, trying to find a dump station on the way home, which we never did. As a last resort tomorrow we can drive to a Camping World. PS - sanidumps website/app stinks. None of the ones listed on there have a dump station!

I'll admit we did fill up right after I heard about it. Back in 2011 tornadoes tore through our part of the state in North Alabama and that left the power off in large areas for a good week. We had about a 1/4 tank of gas and I was concerned about where we were going to get more. Thankfully no real shortage materialized this time.

If 2011 was any eye opener for us it was how woefully unprepared we were personally, and just how sorry local news media was. We probably would have made an impromptu trip to the fort then to avoid it if we had any clue if we could make it to a gas station with gas while towing our camper.  I mean, you would think a communications company could wrangle up some HAM radio operators within their midst to find out what was going on regionally, but noooo..

Yeah, I didn't run out and fill mine up, but they were both low, almost on E, so I had to get gas anyway. But I totally agree with your preparedness thing. When I was in college we had 2 bad ice storms one winter with long power outages. The 2nd one was a few days before spring break, so everyone just left early for that.  I was driving my dad's car down to FL and it was on E.  We went to station after station but nobody had power. Finally found one right at the interstate, and I know we were running on fumes.

David talked to Matthew in Raleigh last night.  He said lots of stations are out there too.  If stations are out in GSO and HP, I'm sure they are in W-S; also.  Anyone else remember the long lines and insane prices of the '70s?

I don't actually remember it. I was alive, but not driving. But I do remember hearing about it.

I can remember a couple of other shortages since I've been driving, but I don't remember what caused them. I assume I was living in Charlotte since I've been here my whole adult life.
