It was far from an EXPLOSION. It was a dry ice bomb. It was dry ice placed in a soda bottle with a little water and sealed shut. The pressure builds up in the bottle and pops when it can't handle any more. There is no fire or explosion involved, just a loud bang. When I worked in a cryogenics plant making liquid oxygen and liquid nitrogen we would make these all of the time and some would pop in our hands. Aside from scaring the heck out of us, there was no danger of injury.

The above qoute tells me he didn't know it would be that loud and that people would react like they did.
