Two pics from Fantasyland this morning. The first is on the bridge leading to the new restaurant (not yet open but you can peak inside) and the second is from the Arielle clamshell ride.

The next batch of attractions is scheduled to open by the end of the year. They are the princess laden "Enchanted Forest", which will include the "Under the Sea, Voyage of the Little Mermaid" ride

And that's the way it should stay!!!

I was looking at the expansion when something dawned on me. The expansion will be inside the purple lines. The green line is the route to the utilidor entrance, the green & red circles, for supplies as well as CM shuttles. It will be interesting to see how they deal with this issue.

More news on New Fantasyland

Thanks to information tweeted by attendees at a presentation at the D23 Destination Disney event over the weekend, we've got some more information about the New Fantasyland expansion. The Imagineers are working hard to make the expansion a series of "family adventures," rather than just a bunch of princess experiences, as was originally announced.

In the Beauty and the Beast-themed area, the inside of Maurice's cottage will be full of details and wacky inventions, as well as an Animatronic wardrobe. A "Magic Moment" will transport you to Beast's Castle to meet with Belle. This is estimated to be a 40-minute experience. Nearby, the Be Our Guest restaurant will feature snow outside its windows year-round.

The new Seven Dwarfs Mine Train ride will be a cross between The Barnstormer at Goofy's Wise Acre Farm and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. There will be two lift hills and two drops, with the second lift hill in the dark inside the Dwarfs' mine. Snow White and possibly the witch will make cameo appearances in the ride.

Over in Storybook Circus Land, the new Dumbo spinner will be made by the same Italian company that made the original ride, but the colors will be much brighter, with more storytelling on the actual ride pieces. The Great Goofini coaster will feature stunt acts gone wrong. Meanwhile, the train station will be completely rebuilt.

Thanks to @insidethemagic and @zannaland for the commentary!

Scuttle’s Scavenger Hunt & Casey Jr. Roundhouse Join the Fantasyland Expansion!

Posted on June 1, 2011

Two new additions to the Magic Kingdom’s Fantasyland Expansion were announced today on the official page of the project, as well as some details on the other attractions coming as part of New Fantasyland:

Beyond the Horizon — New Expansions

“We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.
” —Walt Disney

The Fantasyland Expansion

Princesses, Dwarfs, Beauties and Beasts have all been working past midnight to unveil the grandest expansion of Magic Kingdom theme park ever! Scheduled to begin opening in 2012, here is a glimpse of the future of Fantasyland:

Storybook Circus

The sound of the calliope will lead you to the brand new carousels of airborne pachyderms on Dumbo the Flying Elephant—now with 2 Dumbos! Before taking to the skies on this Fantasyland favorite, experience an array of fun-filled family games and interactive wonders for kids of all ages inside the Big Top.

Barnstormer

Hosted by the Great Goofini, this daredevil roller coaster, which twists and turns high above the Storybook Circus grounds, is getting a bright new look.

Casey Jr. Roundhouse

Adjacent to the Fantasyland Train Station is the Casey Jr. Roundhouse, a circus-themed immersive water play area that’s fun for the little ones. They’ll splish and splash as Casey Jr. billows off cool steam and water squirts from playful monkeys, elephants and camels.

Under the Sea: Journey of The Little Mermaid

Make a splash with Ariel as you take a voyage in a clamshell into a world of imagination under the sea. This attraction features her friends Sebastian and King Triton and, of course, music from the Walt Disney Pictures film.

Scuttle’s Scavenger Hunt

While approaching Ariel’s Grotto to meet The Little Mermaid, join Scuttle for this fun, interactive game! Search the seaside entrance way to find the seagull’s treasures from the Human World, like a dinglehopper or a bulbous snarfblatt. Scuttle will be on hand to help with the hunt.

Enchanted Tales with Belle

In Maurice’s workshop, a magical mirror is your doorway to a captivating storytelling experience. Transport to the Beast’s library to meet Belle and Lumiere, and share in a lively, interactive re-telling of the “tale as old as time.”

Be Our Guest Restaurant

Experience the elegant ballroom, gallery and mysterious West Wing of the Beast’s castle. With seating for 550, this magnificent dining hall will offer great quick-service meals by day and full table-service dining in the evening. Nearby in Belle’s Village, discover the rousing Gaston’s Tavern and Bonjour!

Princess Fairytale Hall

Greet Aurora, Cinderella and Tiana and in their new home, an elegant royal court fit for every princess.

The Seven Dwarfs’ Mine Train

Heigh-ho, heigh-ho, off to work
you
go! Take a rollicking, musical ride through the Seven Dwarfs mine—where a million diamonds shine. This roller coaster features a first-of-its-kind train that responds to every twist and turn of the track . The journey will be accompanied by music from Walt Disney’s animated classic,
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
.

The Casey Jr. Roundhouse is not a big surprise, as we can actually see it in some early concept art (pictured below). On the other hand, “Scuttle’s Scavenger Hunt” is something completely new to us. We expect this to be very similar to the Kim Possible World Showcase Adventure at Epcot. Stay tuned to WDW News Today as more information on the Fantasyland Expansion becomes available.

UPDATE:

Here is the concept art for the Casey Jr. Roundhouse released in the large overall concept back in January:

Also, multiple reports have confirmed that some early testing was conducted for Scuttle’s Scavenger Hunt inside the queue of The Seas with Nemo and Friends about a month ago.

New Fantasyland Expansion Details

POSTED: Wed, 06/01/2011 - 00:45 | POSTED BY: Melinda Gregory

fantasyland_dumbo.jpg

A recent D23 event shed more light onto the ongoing Fantasyland expansion at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom. The creative director of the expansion, Chris Beatty of Disney Imagineering, was on hand to divulge some details.

First off, there will be a new wall to separate Cinderella's Castle from Fantasyland. The wall, which will be situated where the current Dumbo ride is, will look "old" and "like it's always been there" according to Beatty.

Next, guests can expect to become immersed in the storyline of the new Under the Sea: Journey of the Little Mermaid ride. "Part of Your World" and " Poor Unfortunate Souls" will be heard during the ride. Also, look for the landscaping around the ride to be "greener" than the traditional Fantasyland.

There was also some news on the new restaurant, Be Our Guest. The restaurant will be able to seat 550 guests: 300 in the main ballroom and the rest between the beast's art gallery and west wing. It also will be snowing year-round.

In regards to Enchanted Tales with Belle, Beatty had this to say: "We want to give you a 40-minute immersive experience." It is an example of how Disney is rethinking character meet and greets.

As far as Dumbo goes, in addition to being doubled, the ride will get a color overhaul that will be reminiscent of the 1940's and reflective of the beloved movie.

With the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, guests will be accompanying the famous seven to work in the mines and also will see a cameo appearance by Snow White. Imagineers have gotten a sneak peek and a taste of the ride's cars which will flop from side to side. Word is they tried out the motion in Anaheim; Beatty calls the vehicle "extremely comfortable."

Though there is no set date for the Fantasyland expansion to be totally complete, guests can look for parts of the new and improved Fantasyland starting sometime in 2012.

A Peek Behind the Wall: Enchanted Tales With Belle at Magic Kingdom Park

posted on June 6th, 2011 by Jennifer Fickley-Baker, Social Media Manager

“Beauty and the Beast” was released in theaters in 1991, and to say that I was obsessed with this movie is putting it mildly. I was 12 years old when it debuted and I must’ve seen the film at least 10 times that summer. In my mind, nothing was better than spending an afternoon wrapped up in this tale of “far-off places, daring swordfights, magic spells, a prince in disguise!” I remember sitting in the theater, dreaming of visiting Belle’s quiet French village, exploring the halls of the Beast’s mysterious castle and whirling across the golden ballroom in a gown of the same color.

pbw038311SMALL.jpg

Soon fans of all ages will have the opportunity to do just that and take a trip through the world of “Beauty and the Beast” at the Enchanted Tales with Belle storybook adventure, which is currently under construction as part of the Fantasyland expansion at Magic Kingdom Park.

pbw203933SMALL.jpg

Walt Disney Imagineering is currently building Maurice’s workshop, which will serve as scene one of the experience. The workshop, which is modeled after a French cottage, will be surrounded by a wishing well, footbridges and lush landscaping. Once inside, guests will step through a magic mirror and find themselves inside Beast’s expansive library, which he created as a gift for Belle in the film. This room will serve as the setting for a memorable character interaction experience with Belle – which will require a little help from Lumiere, the enchanted candlestick.

Another “Beauty and the Beast” experience planned for this area is the Be Our Guest Restaurant, which will allow up to 550 guests to dine in the ballroom, gallery and “West Wing” area of Beast’s castle.

These and other Fantasyland enhancements will open in phases starting in late 2012.

A New Look at Storybook Circus at Magic Kingdom Park

posted on June 14th, 2011 by Jennifer Fickley-Baker, Social Media Manager

bg-post-top.png I know it’s going to be a great week on the Disney Parks Blog when I get to start by posting a new Fantasyland update. Today I’m happy to share new details on the Storybook Circus area that’s planned as part of the new Fantasyland expansion at Magic Kingdom Park.

cjf018371SMALL.jpg

With all the updates we’ve done on the “royal” side of the Fantasyland expansion – Beast’s Castle, Maurice’s Cottage and Under the Sea ~ Journey of the Little Mermaid – the plans for Storybook Circus seemed to be a bit more mysterious. Until now.

Storybook Circus will be based on our animated film, “Dumbo.” Here, Casey Jr., the famous locomotive from the movie, has rolled into town and brought the grand Storybook Circus with him. The area will be filled with colorful circus tents and nods to the famous film. For example, guests – especially little ones – are welcome to cool down with Casey Jr., who can be found near the train station, getting splashed by playful circus animals.

Just past Casey Jr., guests will encounter big-top circus tents that lead to a “double” version of Dumbo the Flying Elephant. Also, in the tradition of classic air shows, Barnstormer will take on a new look and theme, becoming a spiraling stunt plane built by The Great Goofini.

What do you think? Will you be there when the circus comes to town?

Disney World offers more details about new Dumbo ride at Magic Kingdom

Recently, Disney World officials released another piece of concept art for the Storybook Circus area of the Fantasyland expansion at Magic Kingdom.

The section previously known at Mickey’s Toontown Fair will be dedicated to the story of Dumbo. Of course, the park’s signature ride is being moved there, and as previously reported, a second Dumbo The Flying Elephant will be added because of its popularity. The rides are designed so that guests will view the elephants flying toward each other and together through the center of the attractions. This means one of the Dumbo rides will be the first at at Disney theme park to fly clockwise, a Disney spokesperson told me. There also will be a new interactive queue.

The move of the existing Dumbo will be coordinated with the opening of the new ride, so that at least one Dumbo will always be open, I’m told. The Magic Kingdom renovation will open in phases beginning in 2012, but no dates have been announced yet.

Storybook Circus also will feature Casey, Jr., the locomotive from the animated movie, getting splashed by playful circus animals nears the current train station (back center of illustration). The kiddie roller coaster, the Barnstormer at Goofy’s Wiseacre Farm, is being rethemed to be a spiraling stunt plane built by The Great Goofini (upper right corner of illustration). Large circus tents remain (left side of illustration) as merchandise outlets, though the number has changed, a senior Imagineer recently told the Sentinel.

Want to get the kids up to speed? For its 70th anniversary, Dumbo is being re-released Sept. 20 on DVD and Blu-ray.

Concept art revealed for Scuttle's Scavenger Hunt - coming to the new Fantasyland in 2012

Jul 12, 2011

In yesterday's "Under the Sea - Journey of the Little Mermaid" video released by Walt Disney Imagineering, there appears to be some previously unreleased concept art for one of the lesser known attractions in the new Fantasyland, "Scuttle's Scavenger Hunt".

We first got word of this attraction being part of the new Fantasyland back in May of this year, when Imagineering were carrying out some play testing at the Living Seas in Epcot (read the report here). A few months later, a short description of the attraction appeared on the official Disney World web site:

"Scuttle's Scavenger Hunt

While approaching Ariel's Grotto to meet The Little Mermaid, join Scuttle for this fun, interactive game! Search the seaside entrance way to find the seagull's treasures from the Human World, like a dinglehopper or a bulbous snarfblatt. Scuttle will be on hand to help with the hunt."

This image released yesterday (shown below, and click the thumbnail for the large version) would certainly support that story description given above. This addition to the area would support Disney's recent trend of adding interactive queues that are capable of supporting various "next-gen" initiatives, such as those recently added to the Haunted Mansion, Pooh, and the rumored Peter Pan queue upgrades.

New Imagineering video reveals more about WDW Little Mermaid attraction

WDWLM7.jpg

Since the opening of Star Tours 2 and the Little Mermaid at DCA, and more recently Goofy Sky's School, there was not a lot of news coming from the Imagineering. And suddenly WDI released today this new video showing the making of the WDW version of the Little Mermaid attraction, presented by Imagineer Chris Beatty. Great shots of Imagineers at work, of the WDW Little Mermaid model, and also new renderings which reveal new details on what will be this new version of the ride. As usual the video editing is quite fast so we're going to "stop the time" to have a better look at these interesting pics thanks to home made screen captures. Click on each to see them in bigger size.

WDWLM12.jpg

As i keep repeating to anyone talking about the Little Mermaid attraction, the WDW Magic Kingdom version will be the best one. Not only because the budget will be higher than the DCA version, but also because WDI Imagineers will have much more room available than they had at DCA to build the "perfect" attraction with Eric's Castle, a long themed queue decor, and much more.

You've seen above a new version of the rendering showing the entrance and below is another brand new one showing the whole Little Mermaid area.

WDWLM13.jpg

Also new, the rendering below shows what is probably an early concept-art.

WDWLM1.jpg

One of the most interesting rendering released in this video is the one below. It shows a scene of the queue decor, probably interactive, something that will be unique to the WDW version as they didn't had the room to build one like this at DCA. In fact, WDW fans can expect a long and great queue decor, going from the cave that you see below to right under the castle, and even under the castle kitchen with another scene called "captive lobsters". In that scene - and if WDI plans didn't changed - guests will see the bobtail dog from the movie standing near "captive lobsters" waiting to be cooked by the castle's cook. The dog and the lobsters will probably be audio-animatronics and guests will also see the shadow of the cook, up the stairs leading to the castle kitchen supposedly above the guests.

WDWLM5.jpg

And if you wonder where will be the entrance of this highly themed queue, this next one will tell you exactly where it will be.

WDWLM14.jpg

Another highly interesting new rendering is this next one showing the ride boarding room. Even if the galleon is still at the beginning of the ride, it's obviously a totally different boarding room than at DCA, inside a cave with also what probably will be a retro projection effect of the sea and seagulls - but what we see can also be the outside. All these new details looks pretty exciting, aren't they?

WDWLM15.jpg

Another new rendering, but this time showing the ride opening scene that we already know is the one below.

WDWLM6.jpg

Let' move to the model shots as there is some great one in the video, too, as you will see on the five next pictures.

WDWLM8.jpg

WDWLM10.jpg

WDWLM4.jpg

WDWLM9.jpg

The video also include some shots of ride scenes model like this one for the "kiss the girl" scene...

WDWLM11.jpg

...as well as others showing WDI Imagineers working on the Little Mermaid model.

WDWLM2.jpg

WDWLM3.jpg

As i've said, WDW fans can be "happy happy" as this time they will get the best version of a ride, and we'll probably know more about it at the next D23 convention. If you didn't watched yet this great Imagineering video on the Disney Parks web site, i'm sure you're dying to see it, so here it is below!

PHOTOS - Aerial views of the Fantasyland construction site - Dumbo Foundations, Storybook Circus train station and more

Jul 15, 2011

Here is our latest aerial look at the new Fantasyland construction which shows a huge amount of progress since our last aerial view. Almost every building that will be part of the finished land is now standing in some capacity. Most notable from the aerial views are:

  • The foundations are already poured for the new dual Dumbo's and you can also see the entire queue building and its size
  • The new Fantasyland train station in Storybook Circus is rising
  • Some work is taking place on the site that will ultimately become the Snow White coaster
  • The buildings for Belle's Village are really taking shape
  • The castle wall is well underway

As always, click on the thumbnail for the full size version.

A huge thank you as always to Scott Keating for providing these spectacular shots. For more information on the Fantasyland expansion, head to our FAQ on this page.
