  1. Ashley-

Thanks for the heads up about the other hand gestures. I had no idea. So, I asked the twins about this- sure enough, they knew these. They even told me one you didn't mention. It has a local flavor to it. It's called the Shiekra- when someone asks you to give them a high-five, you swoop your hand down low and say Shiekra! I know Ashley knows what Shiekra is, but for those of you who don't, it's a diving roller coaster at Busch Gardens, Tampa.

Yes, my report does overlap some with DaveInTn's. I personally like it when there are multiple trip reports covering the same time period- it gives us a look at how everyone enjoys the Fort a little differently.

I hope you make it to WDW later this month. As for the Double Decker bus, I had never seen it in operation at the MK before either. But, on our last few visits, I have noticed that they are breaking out those old vehicles during less busy times- like late at night. One night over Thanksgiving week, they had an old firetruck type vehicle giving folks rides up and down Main Street.

    TCD

Great! I will try and spread "The Shiekra" up here in GA. People will have no idea what I am doing/talking about but who cares! As of right now we have one night in and are trying to get another night or 2 in.

  2. oh yes, TCD twins picked up the turkey in the public school system :) The new way to greet each other is to turkey, squirrel, jelly fish, moose, stick shift, rocket, hand hug, etc. each other

Personally I liked using the "hand hug" because as a high school teacher I don't want some 17 year old boy hugging me (even the one-arm-side-hug thing I was not a fan of as I was instructed to do). The last thing I need is pictures ending up on Fox 13! Yes, I was taught how to properly hug a student haha.

on another note, I love the Anna story from the other TR. You two kind of have a cross-over report going on :) I got teared up as well! I hope one day to hitch a ride on the double decker bus, I have never even seen that! I also have not seen the new castle show. We are trying to sneak a quick trip in at the end of the month.

  3. Oh Boy! I have found myself spending more and more time on Pinterest and less on FB! Just too cool! Ironically, I have pinned just a few things Disney on my boards. Guess I need to get to workin' on that!

Me too, I hardly go on FB now. My BF sure is happy for pinterest, I can now cook things that taste good :rofl3:

i will have to check this out... never heard of it.

Warning, it is highly addicting! If you need an invite let one of us who are a member know and we can send you one.

I need to figure it out, but I don't have enough time in a day to get hooked on anything else

You can get sucked in easily! As stated above, I hardly go on FB now... im a pinaholic!

  4. You know, Pam, you just put your finger on something that I have noticed quite a lot of lately.

Mrs. TCD is a pre-school teacher.

The other night she came from her school's Christmas program quite upset. I asked her if the kids were bad. She told me it wasn't the kids- it was the parents. They all set up around the stage taking videos and photos and refused to return to their seats despite repeated requests from the school's director that they not crowd the stage and block the views of those behind them. These parents simply ignored the director, and ruined the show for those who got to watch their backs.

Back in the day, when the TCD girls were in preschool, you wouldn't see this kind of behavior from parents.

This is just a small example of some of the things Mrs. TCD deals with these days.

It is a scary thought what kind of example these parents are setting for their children.

    TCD

This comic went around the school when I was teaching

    309776_10150501049064097_839884096_11348144_218225089_n.jpg

At CHS one of the classes I taught was Child Development and we interacted with the pre-school attached to CHS and I could not believe how some of the parents behaved and the lack of respect! I usually deal with teenagers parents and I thought they were bad (different kind of bad)! Mrs. TCD is a special lady to be a pre-school teacher :superhero:

And I wonder how many Vaction Club package-things they sell at that location. The DVC people always look so bored.

  5. It's very cool that you did your thesis on Native American education. I lived and taught on a Native American Indian Reservation for a couple of years right out of college. It was very interesting to me to learn about and be immersed in their culture. It was a great experience!

Great trip report TCD! I always enjoy reading along on your trip reports and can't wait to read more...

Neat! My thesis focused on the assimilation efforts (through education) and the Carlisle Indian School. I first got interested in Native American studies after learning about the Trail of Tears on my own... it makes me sad that this is not taught in all school districts and most Americans do not know about the extreme assimilation many Native American children and adults went through. I would love to teach on or near a reserve for a year or two!

  6. Hi Ashley!

    Thanks for stopping by.

Thanks for the kind words about my oldest DD. She is really doing well. She was just chosen to be an Orientation Leader for the incoming Freshman this summer. This is a pretty big deal, as over 500 applied, and they picked around 30. Plus she gets free room and board and will get paid this Summer. Woo Hoo!

I would love it if the twins went to UCF. They will definitely apply there. I never thought about the possibility of added expense. My oldest DD does a pretty good job spending money in Tallahasee. Twin #1 really wants to be a Gator, so it's good to know Gainesville is cheaper than Orlando. I know it was for me long ago when I was there- and I didn't have any money to spend anyway. Wherever they go, I hope they go to the same college. They don't agree with that, but I still hope that they do.

Thanks for the info on the Native Americans. I am sure all of the stuff they have hanging from their tee pees has some type of meaning or purpose. I have chatted with these folks before, and some of them are very much in to all of that. The ones I have chatted with a bit too much so.

    TCD

Wow congrats! That sounds like fun... showing off your school that you love so much to all the new students :)

Orlando has so many unique/fun/cool things to do or places to eat at that Gainesville doesn't (we loved Cafe Tu Tu Tango on I-Drive). The fun stuff I did in Gainesville was usaully a lot cheaper than Disney, Universal, outlet malls, Sea World, etc. In Gainesville I went to nature parks and floated down rivers in tubes... more tree hugger type stuff. And in Gainesville the bars are all right there, walking distance from your dorm. In Orlando we would go out in downtown Orlando- pay for parking, sometimes a cab to get all the way there, drinks are more expensive (I rarely drink but they are pricey). However, I also LOVE Gainesville beacuse that was my dream school and Gainesville has that college town feel that UCF does not. I always tell people I loved both schools for different reasons UF has the old SEC feel and is in a college town and UCF has the new modern feel in a city. There is also a rumor that UCF was designed by some old Disney blue prints or something? (the campus is set up in a circle) I wonder if this is true?

My apartment in Gainesville was way more expensive than Orlando. Probably because I lived right by Norman Hall and could walk or ride my bike from my apartment and was next to Sorority row. When it comes time for them to tour schools let me know if you need info on UCF or UF, places to live etc.! I think they should go to the same school too ;)

My Master Thesis was on Native American education so I have an interest in Native American studies :)

  7. Congrats TCD DD on getting published! That is awesome!

My B.S. is from UCF and I LOVED living in Orlando. I thought it was the perfect distance from home, because like your DD's I am close to my family but I was still able to live in a dorm and have that aspect of the college experience. However my BF went to USF (booooo, go Knights!) and he loved it there- and lived at home to save money. One negative about living in Orlando, it is EXPENSIVE!!! I never realized how much money I spent on theme parks, going out to eat (million and 1 places to eat in Orlando), outlet malls, regular malls, and more until I moved to Gainesville which has a limited supply of shopping venues and places to eat. I am sure my dad was happy when I moved to Gainesville!

my family visited Devil's Tower in South Dakota on our out west trip. Devil's Tower is sacred to the Plains Indian tribes and while we were there some kind of month-long sacred event was going on and several red cloths and bundles were hanging in the trees (like the ones on top of the teepees). They called them prayer cloths. It was really neat to experince it and converse with the native americans and learn about the history from authentic people.

  8. OK, then, the next time we are all at the Fort together, you can be the honorary TCD big sister.

Yes, those nails are the stick on things. As you can see, they were using the Halloween version. I am very much a fan of this product, as it saves me from having to pay for a manicure.

Yes, Joanne is from Dunedin, but she lives in North Florida now.

I shop at that Publix from time to time, too, but since they opened the one at Curlew and 19, we go to that one most of the time. That Caladesi one does get too crowded.

Please do try that pulled pork recipe. It is excellent for tailgating. In fact, I got the recipe from some Gator friends who make pulled pork all the time for UF games.

You are going to get me on that pinterest website yet.

    TCD

Great, thanks for the information. Just to confirm, the ghost dog and "hot dog dog" are from Cracker Barrel :)

  9. Do you have any sisters, Ashley?

If not, we could make you one an honorary TCD daughter, and you can hang out with the TCD girls the next time you are at the Fort.

I'll hang out with you dad and drink some Buds.

    TCD

Nope no sisters! Would love to be an honorary TCD daughter :jumpforjoy You'll have to tell them I love their nails, do you know if they used those new stick on nail polish design thingys?

Lovin the TR. I miss attending Under the Oaks so much.

Are you from Dunedin? Downtown Duendin is having a craft show this weekend if you are there :)

OK, Jeff- Here it is -

    Pulled Pork

As far as I know, that Dunedin Winn Dixie still has not been updated.TCD

There is a rumor floating around Dunedin that the Caladesi Publix is going to be expanded. I hope so because that is the one my parents use and on the weekends it is jammed! And it is small considering how big the new ones are (like the JUMBO one they put in Gainesville of Archer a year ago).

And I will have to make that pulled pork for my parents... or for football games yum. If your daughters check out pinterest there are lots of easy crock pot recipes!

    -Ashley

  10. This year, my mother gave us a gift for Halloween which was this same dog dressed in a boxer costume (with a robe and boxing gloves in his mouth). She found it at Cracker Barrel of all places. Has anyone seen any other versions of this statue, or know where they can be purchased? As we drove down the path to the marina, we had to pull over to make room for this guy:

I have a golden lab dressed as a ghost and I got it from the Gainesville Cracker Barrel in the beginning of October when I was there for the Bama game. They also had a yorkie, (boxer as you stated), chiuaua, and some others I cannot remember. They were all dressed up differently.

    p.s.

Nutella is AMAZING :) TCD DD's have good taste... pun intended :rofl3:

  11. I never saw the sign, and we passed by that site many times.

The folks on it seemed nice enough.

I guess you can't blame the guy for trying to make a buck, but I'm glad that they made him take down the sign.

Good job on the shameless plug. You made me look. My girls like Hello Kitty. They used to wear bows, but now so much any more. I'll mention it to them, though.

I see your mom will be at Christmas Under the Oaks this weekend. Mrs. TCD used to go to that all the time back when it was on SPJC's campus. I guess now they do it at Coachman Park. It should be beautiful there by the water this weekend.

    TCD

I want to say we saw the sign Thursday or Friday, if it was Friday it was in the earlier part of the day.

Yep she will be at Under the Oaks. She was at Mt. Dora and Fiesta in the Park in Orlando and did great! This is our first season of shows, before we only sold college accessories and it kinda grew into all bows. Thanks for checking it out :jumpforjoy

    1. :whew:

Gee, I must have caught him post fort crackdown, because I didn't see any sign. Instead he resorted to carnival style "barking."

"get yer wooden candy corn here!" 1sm148jester.gif

We never saw the people so can not confirm the carnival barking ;)

we saw the sign either Thursday or Friday (earlier part of the day)... it wasn't big and it was low on the ground.

  12. 2. I can't believe that guy was trying to sell the candy corn. I saw him packing up, and I would say he didn't sell very many. Fail.

    TCD

I did notice earlier in the weekend they had a "for sale" sign up for the decorations. I wonder if the Fort told them to take the sign down? I did not bother to find out prices.

My mom and I laughed because we makes bows and headbands, and have a ton of Disney ones (shameless plug: find us on facebook- Lucy Lu Accessories http://www.facebook....282745028412276) :-\ . She said next time she is going to set up shop at our site and sell bows haha. She even has special Minnie Halloween and Christmas bows that would have been a huge hit. Kidding of course, she is really not going to set up shop.

  13. I've seen some of my friends on FB saying they've posted things on Pininterest...never knew what it was! Now I'm going to have to check it out! Thanks for the info!

Prepare to be addicted... you have been warned :) I already have over 600 pins in a month :dropjaw: and I have made lots of the recipes and crafts I found on there and they all turned out great! If you need any help let me know, I had to write a tutorial for my mom lol.

    Happy pinning :)

  14. Loving the report already!

Glad my dad and I got to meet you, my dad said you should come over and watch football next time and have a beer... except he only drinks "bud heavy" thats normal Budweiser... as opposed to Bud Light for you "young just graduated a million years ago out of college guys" ;-) Kidding... except not really! Ok i'll stop with the mean jokes now. My dad is not up to date on beer terminology, our waitress in Gainesville asked my dad if he wanted a bud heavy and this was my dads face  he thought it meant a bigger beer! So I hope you like Bud Heavy ???

Back on topic: I agree with your twins, I like being by all the action and hearing the busses... Disney busses just sound better than non-Disney busses :)

And your nephew is adorable! I cannot wait to have a child (well I can but you know) and have them raised a "Fort Kid" like your daughters :) I would love to meet your daughters... I bet they know some of the same people (and teachers) I know!

  15. Hey Ashley-

I don't think Pinterest is the thing for me, but I did want to say that it was great to finally get to meet you and your dad at the Fort this past weekend.

I didn't know you rented out the Grand One!

    Wow!

I'm not sure I know what the Grand One is, but I'm assuming it's the nice yacht that I have seen cruising around the Seven Seas Lagoon and Bay Lake. If you have photos, you ought to share them with us!

    TCD

Aww really, I know you have an inner DIY side to ya!

Your daughters will probably like the site a lot! I see lots of college stuff on there and crafty headbands and other things to make :) if they want an invite you can PM their e-mail addresses :)

It was great meeting you too, I am not sure if I will make it to the UF/FSU game but my parents will definitely be there. If you go, our RV is like an open house on game does so stop by!

I will post Grande One pics as soon as a download them to my computer. It is the yacht that is kept at the Grand Floridian but they picked us up at the fort dock

I definitely didn't know that. Thanks for telling me. I've been afraid to pin things ever since I got emails from people I didn't know. :)

You are welcome, pin away! Or check the settings :)

  16. I'm on Pinterest too, but for some reason, every time I pin something, I get a response from a random person about it. All I can figure is that when I am pinning, the people that I am pinning from are getting some type of notice from me and responding. I have no idea why. it's weird!

Yep, when you re-pin something it lets the original person know in e-mail. It will say somethign like "MicknMin repinned your pin..."

you can also "tag" people in pins... so if you see something you are not interested but you think your friend might be you type a comment to that pin with the @ sign... for example "@micknmin" means I thought you would like something. it will show up in your "@mentions" section of your page.

Therefore, the original person who pinned it will also get an e-mail saying you left a comment that said "@insertnamehere"

hope that made sense :) I think there is a way to turn off notifications. And I apologize if you already knew all of this :)

  17. Hey Fiends,

My name is lucy_love (Ashley) and I am a lurker (hides under desk) :-[ . I am friends with some of you on Facebook but I hardly post on here… I came from the other side… eeek. I was at the fort this weekend and saw lots of fiends everywhere! I'm just too shy! We even rented out The Grand One for fireworks Friday, IT WAS AWESOME! I highly suggest it. However, we did have to add on a lot of extras.. like food, drinks, butler, etc.

I am on the new website called pinterest.com it is a source for all things DIY, cooking, crafts, fashion, party planning, trips, photography, education tools, etc. As soon as I saw how amazing the site is I had to tell my fiends! I wanted to tell all the fiends about it because I think a lot of you will like it as much as I have! I have already made some of the Halloween crafts and recipes from the site! IF THIS IS ALREADY ON HERE, I APOLOGIZE!

You need an invite to join (that is the quickest way to get in) so if you would like one send me your preferred e-mail address and I will send you one!

Since I had to explain this to my mom, this is how it works:

You make themed “boards” such as Disney, DIY, Christmas crafts, kids snacks, wedding planning, whatever interest you! It is customized to your likes. Next you “pin” things that interest you back to your boards. The “pins” are an image of anything (Crockpot dips, Christmas garland, etc.) and you re-pin what you like back to your boards. Now you may be asking, oh gee this is a lovely picture of cake-batter-cookies but how do I make them? Well, you click on the picture and it will bring you to the original source so you can get the directions/recipe/whatever you need.

Additionally, you can add the “pin it” bookmark to your browser so if you are on marthastweart.com or allrecipes.com etc. and you like something you can “pin it” back to your boards so you no longer have a million pages bookmarked. You can even pin youtube videos! (I did for crochet help).

One more thing, you have to link it to a facebook or twitter account (I think?) so you “follow” people. You will see your friends pins on the homepage. If you want to browse the site there is a drop-down menu in the top center titled “everything” you can pick from categories like education, DIY, kids, etc. and browse other people that you are not following. And you can “unfollow” people if you have different interest than them.

Hope this all make sense. My best advice is to look at this when you are bored and play with it to figure it out.

If you have questions let me know! I have attached the link to the pinterest homepage and my page so you can get an idea for how it works:

    http://pinterest.com/

    http://pinterest.com/ashleyqd/

    Sending smiles,

    Ashley

    p.s.

Sorry this is so long, I am a grad student… I write a lot :))

  18. Coolest dad ever award!

My mom would let me skip school and go to Busch Gardens if I got good grades and if I were under the days you can miss and still exempt exams rule. Therefore, I went to school sick as a dog so I could use my 4 days a semester at Busch Gardens

This was before we have our RV and Disney season passes... going to Disney would have been awesome! I do not know if BG still does this but when I was in high school you could go during the month of March, pay a 1 day admission, and come pack the rest of the year free  for a 16 year-old that's pretty sweet!

  19. I wonder if it was my Fort Fiend sign? My husband said that someone came by one morning and was asking about the board. I was inside drying my hair, so he didn't call me to come outside. I felt bad because I wanted to give the person a FF.net card so that they would stop by and visit the board. Was it you by any chance?

I think you have been duped re. The shoe tree. PETA could care less about something killing a tree.

I agree. I think that the so called captain was pulling your leg. WDW is private property. If they want to kill a tree, they can.

Also WDW security are not police, just CMs that mostly sit on their butts or stand around all day and do very little work.

Some of them suffer from the Barney Fife syndrome and think that they are police.

    First off...

    :grpwelcome:

Interesting bit of info about the shoe tree. Not sure I buy the PETA angle, but hey - stranger things have happened!

    Well... I guess that's 2 good things...

    1. Disney Po-Po is actually watching who's driving

    2. You look mah-velous!

You can try PM-ing TCD here on the boards.

Thank you everyone! MickinMin, that was not me :( which loop were you in?

Hopefully I will post often. I had about 500 post on the other board and that was over a period of 5 years so I do not have the best stats (hopefully that will change).

Regarding the shoe tree and PETA. It is all about the birds... the tree apparently is a bird habitat so if the tree goes down so do the bird nests. I should have added that to the original post, sorry!
