  1. I know CDN Cruiser was reading along earlier.

This is the spot he likes to get when he is at the Fort. Somebody else had it for New Year's. These are all from that site:

    Thanks Andrew!!

Wow . . . it's an honor to be named in a TCD Trip Report.

Yes, we like 707 and we try to get it when we can. We also like 705, 706, 708 and 714.

We were in 714 for the first two weeks of December, just a few sites down from Dave the Castle Guy.

You can find our Trip Report here: http://www.carol-ann...ip%20Report.htm ------------ (shameless hijack)

We'll be back for the first two weeks of February, trying for 707 again! :)

Great Trip Report - as usual! Keep it coming!

  2. I have an extra Mickey lamp built and will be bringing it with me to the Fort in December. We'll be there from Nov 30th to Dec 14th.

If you are going to be there at the same time and you would like to buy one rather than build one, please send me a PM and we'll work out the details.

It's a 12" globe with 6" ears, the ears are lit as well and it's complete with a post and a solid base.

    It looks just like this!

  3. I'd love to have a milk can too, but they are hard to find . . . and it would use up a lot of my valuable storeage space!

I use a patio umbrella stand - they are cast metal and weigh about 20 pounds.

Very sturdy - mine has gone through some serious storms and never blown over.

Do not use a Christmas tree stand - they are not sturdy enough.

Two friends have shattered their lamps with Christmas tree stands.

One gust of wind and Mickey is toast!

The umbrella stand is about $20.00 at WalMart.

Use a hammer and chisel to knock the hex nut off the outside of the post on the umbrella stand and your lamp post will slide right over top of the umbrella post.

I drill a couple of holes through both the lamp post and the umbrella post, add a couple of bolts and wing nuts and it's all secure!

Easy and very secure! Plus it is easy to disassemble to store and transport.

  4. Do you have the lights in the ears?

For those that have lights in the ears, where did you find a set of lights to use for the ears?

    I use ordinary Christmas lights.

I cut a section with two lights, add a plug and rivet them to a metal clip which I make from metal strapping. The clip slides on to the flange of the smaller globes, inside the large globe.

    My instructions are here: http://www.carol-ann...ckey%20Lamp.htm

  5. On our trips down from Ontario, we have stayed at the Statesville KOA which is about 60 km north of Charlotte. Easy on/off access from I77 and will work just fine as an overnight stop

Yes, Statesville KOA is convenient for an overnight stay and as a bonus you can shop at JR's - it's almost next door!

At Jacksonville there's a lot of construction on I-95, take the 9A eastern bypass not the I-295 western bypass. We always go just a bit past Jacksonville to St. Augustine and stay at North Beach Camp Resort. Very nice place!

From there it's a quick two-hour hop to the Fort!

  6. What type of glue are you using to affix the ears? I used superglue which I thought worked well until I knocked the lamp over and the ears fell off. I understand I shouldn't have knocked it over in the first place. Since I have to put it back together I figured I ask what you all are using. I didn't see anyone refer to a specific type.

Look back to post #24 in this thread for the kind of glue I use.
