  1. We are camping in a pop up. As you know, cant really lock a pop up. We will have some electronics and other valuables. Normally we are not concerned because campers are the best kind of people. But, because there are times that we might be gone all day, we have a little concern. We usually camp at state parks and not rv parks so not too familiar with the security issues. Does the Fort have lockers or lock boxes to rent? We could always put them in the car, but not sure about that do to the heat. Have any of yall ever had problems? What are your suggestions?

We are area so excited. Two days until we leave!!!

  2. We are camping July 1 -12. MY hubby is attending a conferance in Orlando the week before and was wanting to drive through FW to get a look at the sites. We've downloaded the app and seen some great pics, thank you for that it is very helful. By driving through, he might help narrow down some sites for us. We are in a pop up and will also have a tent. We are hoping for loop 1500. We will also put out an awning and have a couple of ez ups. (I think we are bringing everything but the kitchen sink:)) Any good suggestions? We will have a crewmax truck and an escape. Figuring at least one needs to go to overflow. We havent seen the sites on google yet, hoping to do that this weekend. Any advice and suggestions are totally appreciated.

  3. I just recently bought an Igloo portable ice maker. It will make about 26 lbs of ice daily, but you do have to keep emptying to tray and refilling the water or it stops making ice. Once turned on, it will make a "light" batch, then drops ice about every 4 minutes. The tray fills about every hour, sometimes less. Surprising these little cubes last longer than my refrig ice maker. I like my drinks with alot of ice (spoiled that way), so its perfect. I got this ice maker from Samsclub for $99.00 Have taken it on at leSt one trip and it did well. We camp during Julymand August in Texas, so any relief from the heat is pure heaven. We are also in a pop up and use the xtreme coolers with block Ice. My husband alsomade a cover to go over the cooler made of reflectix and they helps as well, to deflect some of the heat. We are hoping to buy a 3.5 cu refrig with small freezer to help keep things cool. We are less than amonth from coming for our first time. We are all excited, I just hope I can get iit all together. There is so much to do, but we are staying for 11 nights, so we will have some downtime, I hope. I so enjoy all the information you provide and you keep the chuckles coming. Hope to me ya'll sometime.

  4. After reading a few threads I'm a little confused regarding wifi service. Do all the loops have wifi ornot? What is the fee for service and do you need the modem and a wifi router. If no available wifi, then another option is using our phones. How is Verizon there? We were thinking about getting a hot spot, but I believe that will increase the data usage as well. Any suggestions or advice?

  5. We are going to WDW and Fort Wilderness for the first time July 2, 2014.  We are driving from Houston and camping in our pop-up.  Any suggestions for camping around the Lake City area?  Drive time to WDW from Houston is between 14 and 18 hours--we are hoping for only about a 4-6 hr drive to Fort Wilderness on the 2nd day of the trip.  Good Sam club has Lake City Campground and Inn & Out,  Has anyone camped at these parks?  Any other suggestions?

  6. I would love to be able to get a discount. We are going in July 2014, any suggestions? We are not AAA members, but would not mind becoming a member if it could get us a decent discount. I was reading somewhere that not all AAA locations have the same offers? I haven't had time to check here in Texas yet, but do ya'll know anything about that?

  7. Hello, it's the newbie again. I'm still feeling things out since I have never camped here before. Actually, have really only camped in Texas. But I belong to a pop up camping club and when we have to can't make a campout, we usually try to give/ sell our site one of the other members before we cancel the reservation. We simply put the site in that person's name. Do you know if Disney allows that?

  8. Kelly, first, I want to thank you for your service to our country. Congratulations on your efforts. You will do well without a doubt. Since I'm a newbie, I am so encouraged by the fellowship and camaraderie of this group. It is so neat that they are willing to help with you when you get there. We only have a pop up, but have had our fair share of blow outs. Not only dangerous, but expensive. We actually travel with 2 spares since we had 2 blow outs in one trip. We are very careful about our tire pressures, but we have recently determined that the camper was over loaded for the tires. We have since redistributed the weight of what we carry. One thing that helped is that we did weight our camper, fully loaded. We also bought these tire sensors that wirelessly give the air pressure and temperature of the trailer tires. It is interesting to see the fluctuation of the pressures and temperatures as you travel along. We've only had these sensors for the last three trips, but since we redistributed the weight, we have really seen a drop in the pressures and the temperatures. Of course, we don't know what temp or pressure would cause a blow out (hope not to find out the hard way:) Anyway, the previous advice has been great--we never drive over 65 pulling our trailer, and sometimes even slower depending on the pavement conditions. Always check your tire pressures before you pull out and be sure to check your spare pressures. Finally, I know this sounds weird, but try not to run over the tire treads littering the freeways from previous blowouts. The last 3 blow outs that we had, happened just after passing the "blowout treads" from other vehicles. Maybe it's the steel belts that split out, I don't know. But it has happened too often to be a coincidence. I have learned now to look for them, and to change lanes or try to navigate around them.

I know that you will do well, good luck in you backing up practice, don't get discouraged and stay safe.

  9. YEAH!!!! We booked our reservations for July 2-July 12th.  I am so excited.  We don't have tickets yet and I still have lots of questions.  But, ya'll have been so helpful so far.  We had a family meeting and decided, this was the best time, even though it will be crowded.  We just know that it will be exciting, I can't wait.  Hope to get to meet some of ya'll when we go. It is just so much information and planning. But, we have 10 months to get it all together, (I hope). I hope ya'll don't get tired of me asking lots and lots of questions. I already have a several, but before I bug you, I want to see if ya'll have already answered them somewhere else. I'm sure we will be talking soon. Thanks again.

  10. Ya'll are too funny.  Thanks for all the advice.  Being from Texas, we are used to HOT.  We actually have camped in our pop up in west Texas 4th of July.  However, HOT in a state park is totally different than the concrete jungle.   Of course, I grew up in Texas without AC, but my kiddos are AC acclimated.

We will have a family meeting to see if we could possibly change, but, I'm somewhat excited about Brent's and Tri-Circle D's comments about all the extra things surrounding July 4th.

DinDavie's suggestions of a backpack is great, and it brings up an important question that I have regarding bringing foods into WDW.  My youngest daughter is a Type 1 diabetic and it is important that we carry food, snacks and water.  So based on what you are saying it is acceptable to carry food into WDW?  (I'll be posting another question regarding attending the park with disabilities, loads of questions regarding that.)

We might be meeting Rennie and Judy there for the 4th. So, knowing that it will be busy and crowded, when do you think that we need to make a final decision--rather how quickly do you think the Fort will fill up for July 4th?  Thanks for all the advice, ya'll are awesome.

  11. Hi, I'm a newbie and we are planning on camping at the Fort summer of 2014.  Originally we were thinking of week of July 4th, but concerned about the crowds.  We know that some waterparks here in Texas are actually less crowded on the holidays, because people avoid them because of the assumption that they will be crowded.  Is WDW the same?   We have flexibility in our schedule and I know that summer is the busiest time to go, but no choice with one still in high school.  Any suggestions?  We will probably stay for at least a week.  Also, since we are in a pop-up we most likely will be staying in the partial sites.  I am so thankful for your group.  This is a wonderful site with loads of information, thank you so much for putting this together and for helping those of us that really are clueless to all that can be done and how to do it.  Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
