Official press release ...

This summer, journey into the exciting depths of your own imagination in FIGMENT #1, the new Disney Kingdoms series created by the unique collaboration between Marvel and Walt Disney Imagineering. This five-issue series, created by rising star writer Jim Zub (Skullkickers), fan-favorite artist Filipe Andrade (Captain Marvel) and blockbuster cover artist John Tyler Christopher, weaves an all-new steampunk fantasy adventure that reveals the never-before-told origin of the inventor known as Dreamfinder and his trusty dragon companion!

A mainstay of Walt Disney World’s Epcot® Theme Park, Figment and the enigmatic inventor Dreamfinder have captivated visitors of EPCOT’s Journey Into Imagination attraction for years and Marvel and Disney are proud to bring their exciting story to the masses this June!

“Can you imagine the never-before-revealed origin of one of Disney’s most creative characters? Can you picture a Marvel spin on the Epcot® Theme Park’s mind-expanding attraction, Journey Into Imagination? Have you ever wondered how the inventor known as Dreamfinder created a certain inquisitive purple dragon?” says editor Bill Rosemann. “Be prepared for all of these answers–not to mention amazing creatures, magical lands, and cool clockwork contraptions–in FIGMENT!”

“Expanding the story of Figment has been intimidating, but I’m genuinely enjoying it,” says writer Jim Zub in an interview with Marvel.com. “I want to do right by Disney fans and new readers alike, creating an entertaining story and that comes from working with engaging characters. Digging a bit deeper into Figment and Dreamfinder has been a fun challenge. In so many ways this story really is a ‘Journey Into Imagination’, in both word and deed.”

This summer, all it takes is one little spark to let your imagination take flight. Don’t miss the highly anticipated debut of the next title in the Disney Kingdoms family when FIGMENT hits comic shops this June!

Following last week’s “spark” teaser, today Disney and Marvel have revealed a first look at the artwork for their next Disney Kingdoms line of comics.

As many fans guessed, the main character of the new comic will be none other than Figment, the beloved purple dragon from Epcot’s Journey Into Imagination attraction. In the art, he’s posing with a younger version of the famed Dreamfinder, also from the ride, with a bit of steampunk style.

The pattern on Dreamfinder’s vest should look familiar to Epcot fans as well.

From Inside the Magic...

Last week’s unveiling of Figment and Dreamfinder for Disney and Marvel’s upcoming Disney Kingdoms comic simply called “Figment” received a huge response from fans filled with excitement over the return of the beloved Epcot duo.

Today Marvel has provided Inside the Magic with another exclusive, a first look at the variant cover of the first issue! It features Figment, naturally, as drawn by Walt Disney Imagineer Tom Morris.

You might remember Tom Morris from my on-ride interview when Radiator Springs Racers first opened at Disney California Adventure. He’s worked on countless attractions during his long tenure at WDI, now a part of the creative group behind the Disney Kingdoms series.

The logo treatment for the comic has not yet been finalized.

“Figment” #1 will hit stores in June 2014.

PHOTO: First Look at “Figment” #3 cover, adding a musical flair to upcoming Disney comic from Marvel

Marvel has shared with us another first look at the upcoming “Figment” comic, this time showing off the third cover in the 5-issue series that will debut next month.

The cover, by John Tyler Christopher, once again shows Figment, the young Dreamfinder, and their winged red friend (as previously seen on cover #2), adding in some sort of pixie-like creature.

The musical score behind them doesn’t seem to be “One Little Spark.”

The “Figment” series is described as:

An all-new steampunk fantasy story exploring the never-before-revealed first adventure of the inventor known as Dreamfinder and his famous dragon Figment! Our daring duo explores the realms of imagination, finding friends and foes alike…while back on Earth, a clockwork army assembles under the command of the frightening force known only as The Singular!

Figment #3 (of 5) is written by Jim Zub and penciled by Filipe Andrade. The first of the series will be released in June.

Review: Figment #1 comic blends Marvel, Disney styles with page-turning fun and just enough childish delight

The first “Figment” comic hits store shelves tomorrow from Marvel, the second title in the new Disney Kingdoms line following Seekers of the Weird.

Based on and inspired by Epcot’s classic Journey Into Imagination attraction, “Figment” #1 is a joyous read, beautifully drawn in a style that captures the essence of Disney while maintaining its own original feel.

This first “Figment” comic introduces the character Disney fans know as Dreamfinder, calling him Blarion Mercurial. He’s a young inventor at what seems to be a prestigious scientific London institution, under scrutiny for his wild ideas. (You know, electron beams, crystal prisms, gyroscopes, and magnetisms…)

It’s here that Blair inadvertently conjures a figment of his imagination, in a moment straight out of the ride’s famous Sherman brothers song, “One Little Spark.”

figment-550x422.jpg

The character of Figment in this first issue is written so perfectly that his words easily come off the page as if spoken in his recognizable, boisterous voice.

It’s no wonder “Figment” #1 is entitled “Journey Into Imagination.” It’s clearly just the beginning of the adventure, a definite page-turner that ends leaving readers immediately wanting more.

In addition to the obvious lead character connections to the ride, Disney fans will already pick up on a few other references, including the Future World font used in the comic’s titles.

Though the current version of Epcot’s Journey Into Imagination attraction isn’t the best that’s ever been, the classic spirits of Dreamfinder and Figment are indeed alive in the new Marvel / Disney comic, obvious that those who created it are fans of the original experience.

This second installment in the Disney Kingdoms series is even stronger than the first, appealing to adults and kids alike with a fun blend of sci-fi and fantasy fun. I will definitely keep reading.

Figment #1 goes on sale tomorrow, June 11, 2014, with the main cover (above) and two variant covers (below).
