Hi guys,
Disney historian Jim Korkis and I will be recording a podcast about the old Fort Wilderness Railroad tomorrow morning at the Meadow Trading Post between 8 and 9 AM. I should be done by 9 if anyone would like to stop by and say hello and meet in person!
-
I'll be getting there Sunday!! Wahoo! Plus, I'll post later too, but I'm recording a live podcast all about the Fort Wilderness RR with Disney historian Jim Korkis. I'll try to do it at Meadow Trading post Tuesday late afternoon if anyone wants to stop and say hi!

Last year we stayed in sight 821, and my son put his tent in the Pineneedles right behind the RV, and he said it was very comfortable. I'm actually not coming in until Sunday morning now that I look at my calendar. I'm actually spending Saturday night at Wekiwa State Park a little north to go see the springs and do some kayaking. My buddy will arrive ahead of me on Saturday. we are pretty flexible, if we can't get 700 it's no big loss, he just liked it from a previous stay. It's more important that we be close together so our kids can play and it's easy cooking meals and so on. So that will mean more than which actual loop it is.
-
Thanks guys, I've been looking at the app and the videos, too. I posted anyway because I thought there may be things I can't tell just by looking at those and some of you might have a few favorites...personally my fav loops are 300 and 600, but my buddy and his fam want to try 700 this time.
-
Hi Guys, I'm heading down for almost 2 weeks on Saturday, and I'm thinking of requesting Loop 700 this time. I hear it was recently renovated. There are 2 RV's of us traveling, and I want a site deep enough that my teen son can set up his tent behind our RV...what 2 sites would you recommend so we can request being next to our friends but one of the sites being deep enough for my son's tent? Any thoughts?

Rod-
Good article.
A couple of corrections- First, there are no diesel busses growling their way around Fort Wilderness. The buses are gas, not diesel, and have been for as long as I can remember, around 20 years of so.
Second, that photo of the Settlement Depot isn't right. Look at the video posted here :http://www.fortfiends.net/forum/topic/13386-a-couple-old-pics-from-the-fort/?p=403164
The photo you refer to as the Settlement Depot has the tracks on the other side of the building, parallel to the road. I'm not sure where that photo was taken, but it doesn't appear to be the Settlement Depot.
Great catch on the buses! .....I guess from driving my own diesel pulling the 5th wheel and and all the other folks doing the same, I was thinking in diesel terms for the buses, too. I'll have to fix that in the article. Those buses are still loud, tho, if you're camped right on the route! About the pic, it came from a recent friend I've made, David Leaphart, who literally wrote the book on the FWRR, it is from the collection of photos from a cast member who worked the RR. He says that's the depot, I'll check with him tho. Thanks for writing!

Mark- you must have missed the Official Fort Wilderness List of Missing Magic: You have some items that need to be added to that list. You can find it here: http://www.fortfiends.net/forum/topic/13386-a-couple-old-pics-from-the-fort/page-9#entry402321TCD
This is an awesome list! I had forgotten several of these...like the peacocks! I LOVED having them around! And those tree stump trash cans...I hear they were repurposed from Disneyland frontierland. I need to write an article on all these lost and gone things...I think my favorite was going on the marshmallow marsh with my mom and dad and my bro and sister. And if you had a fun guide, they would race the other canoe! Anyone remember that?

Hope you have a great day at the Fort!! We'll be around the campsite in the morning that day, if you see Fiend signs say hello!
I definitely will!,

Thanks! I was14 when it closed, but I remember riding it with my mom and dad, it was awesome! I wish it had been brought back...when I come in2 weeks I plan to hunt and photo what's left. If you've heard of Jim Korkis, he and I are going to record a show for my podcast live from Fort Wilderness on Tuesday, Nov 4th all about the RR.

A lot of you guys probably remember the old Fort Wilderness RR...being both a Disney writer and obsessive Disney fan as well as a Fort Fiend whose favorite place in all WDW is the Fort with my family, I really get into the Fort's history. I've been writing a series of articles about the Fort on MousePlanet.com for a couple of months, my latest came out today all about the old Railroad that ran thru the campground. You can find it here if you'd like to read it:
If you like it, leave me a note or comment in the articles comment section, I'd love to hear your thoughts!

David Leaphart, who wrote a couple of books on the FWRR, also contributed some info to Fort Fiends that might be helpful. You can find it on this page...

I'm actually in touch with David, and emailed him earlier today about getting some pix...his book about the old RR is FANTASTIC!! It's hard to put down, but then I'm a real geek for the Fort. I will actually be crediting his work on my upcoming show.

Hi Fiends, as many of you know, I'm a Disney podcaster and writer at WDWmousenger.com and for Mouseplanet.com. I'm doing a story about the Fort Wilderness RR this month for mouseplanet and in November I'm doing a podcast show and a story for the blog. My question is, does anyone have any old photos from the railroad? I would like to include photos with my story, but even though my family rode the RR numerous ties back in the old Fort days, I guess we never actually took pix of it...cant find any in mom and dad's albums, anyway. If someone has any pix and wuldn't mind letting me use them in my story, I'd sure appreciate it! :jumpforjoy

Rod,
It might be of interest to you that the Fiends that bought one of the FWRR cars are currently at the Fort.
The story of how and why they bought it is very interesting.
Still learning how this site works--bear with me if I've posted this twice...Lou, I would really like to speak with them! Think you could put me in touch?
-
@Lou--I'd love to talk with them, do you think you could put me in touch? @ Brady BzLyn--I'll look for signs on the sites! I think I should order one, too

Thanks! I have a lot more I want to write on the Fort, and several podcast shows yet to do on it...I've had so much fun researching and writing it all that I'm thinking of writing a book or book about The Fort, especially focusing on the history...stay tuned! Hope to meet some of you in Nov!
-
Good job on the articles- very well written and accurate.
I haven't had a chance to listen to the podcast, but I'm sure it's just as good.

Wow! This is GREAT stuff! I would love to do a quick interview with Hilda or Devores or BOTH for a quick show on the week sometime between Nov 2-12! I'll already be doing a story on the old Railroad at FW and this would be a great topic together...I didn't see Hilda on here, but Devores are you game? Will you be there then?
-
You could stay at the Fort indefinitely by continually making 30 day ressies and linking. Hilda has been there for years and our own Devores was there for about a year and a half. I never spent more than 3 months at one time. Devores is a full time CM and I'm a seasonal. We both felt that even w/ CM perks it cost to much for the long term.
Don't get me wrong,,, I have been to a LOT of different places and met some really nice people but for two/four weeks there is nothing better then the Fort and the CMs that work there. OH, most of the fiends are pretty damn nice also. :mh1: :doublebeer:

Welcome, Rod.
How about a link to your continuing column about Fort Wilderness?

10 weeks for us, Jan-Mar and then again all of October. What is good about it, your at DISNEY, we have AP's, but only do the parks for a few hours in the am one or two days a week at most. There are even weeks we don't do a park. The atmosphere at the FORT is enough in itself, at least for us. Nope, not a CM. The only negative is the lack of rule enforcement, especially on weekends/holidays when the locals show up.
I arrive on Nov 2nd, looks like I will just miss you! Thanks for the info, my next month's column or the one right after focus in on long try stays. Looking forward to my 2 weeks coming up in Nov!

What is the longest anyone has stayed at The Fort? What was good about long term? Did you work at Disney? Was there anything you didn't like? I am a podcaster and blogger at WDWmousenger.com and I also am writing a continuing column at another website all about Fort Wilderness and I was hoping some fiends could give me some input?
