Morrow Mountain State Park, NC

Recommended Posts

We just returned a weekend at Morrow Mountain. The park is about 100 miles away so makes a nice destination for a quick weekend getaway. A lot of the park was built by the CCC and WPA during the depression and the newer buildings erected by the state have followed the same design styling so it is often hard to tell old from new.

It was hot and humid when we arrived Friday. We had rain off and on all day Saturday but by Sunday the weather had cooled and humidity dropped. The rain it fell at times that it didn't have an effect on our hikes so we had good weekend anyway. We were surprised at how empty the campground was as it is usually full or close to it. The only thing I can think of is a lot of folks are holding off with the 4th coming up.

The campground has 84 sites located in three loops. 22 of the sites have 50A electric service. There are no water or sewer hookups.

Rates from the park website:

Drive-to / Walk-in Camping Fees (no electrical / no water hookups):

(Water, restrooms and shower facilities.)

  • Picnic table and grill on campsite --- $20/day
  • Senior citizen (62 or older) --- $15/day
Drive-to / Walk-in Camping Fees - with electrical (no water) hook-ups

(Recreational vehicles and tents; water, restrooms and shower facilities.)

  • Picnic table and grill on campsite --- $25/day
  • Senior citizen (62 or older) --- $19/day

Rates posted include reservation free of $3/night as my receipt itemizes $22/night plus the fee.

We didn't get any photos of our site this trip so I included some from a previous trip. Some of the scenic pictures aren't the greatest do to the wet, cloudy weather. I also have some pictures of the reconstructed Dr. Francis Kron estate that is in the park but the upload didn't take. I will see about adding them later.

Our site. Should give you an idea of the openness:

The cabins have screened in porches and masonry fireplaces. I didn't take more shots because they were all occupied.

The pool. There is a kiddy pool to back left that doesn't show up in the picture:
