  1. Wish I would have thought of this.  I can get pictures to facebook in real time.

Taking pictures with a camera and downloading them to a computer, then uploading them to a picture site, then writing a report and trying to insert pictures, then posting it all up here?  Well that is beyond my expertise.  And if it wasn't, it's beyond my ability to not procrastinate it away.

  2. That site is pretty cheesy.   My uneducated guess:  the site stays the same, the only merchandise that gets listed separately is anything that shows up on ebay or in a local magazine article.

I've known about this place and always wanted to go there, but each year I forget.  Maybe next year.

And wasn't there another place a bit of a drive from FW where they sold off old DW stuff?  What am I thinking of?

  3. The best, cheapest place we've stayed in the Black Hills is the Hart Ranch.  http://www.hartranchresort.com/form/2.html?random=0

To get the good deal you have to sit through one of their pitches to buy in and be an owner.  And I have to tell you it was the most painless one I've ever been to.  A nice retired real estate agent explained the rules and how it works, and asked if we had any questions.  No high pressure, no pushing at all.  We actually had some questions on how things work, otherwise we would have been sprung earlier.  And we KNEW we weren't buying anything.  And we never felt tempted.  It's a great campground, and stuff in the store and restaurant was cheap.  It's a bunch of retirees running the place and they keep everything nice and reasonably priced.  And from the ranch you are in a good position to take the back roads to all the great stuff to see in the Black Hills if you take the back roads.  It's very centrally located on a good road.

  4. Boy, have I got a LOT of advice for you.  I'll start slow.  If you go through the UP, Wisconsin, and across MN and the two Dakotas, it's almost all two lane Highway.  Your travel time will be impacted until you get most of the way across MN because of all the small towns.  Once you get farther out west, two laners aren't such a big deal because you can still make time.

When we travel west, I like to stay in the small towns.  Once you get to western MN and into the Dakotas and Nebraska, most of the small towns, even the little tiny ones, have free RV parking for overnight stays in city parks.  Some are better than others.  I do lots of scoping on google maps and bing maps to decide if it looks any good.

Big piece of advice:  Nebraska has an amazing state park system.  Really top notch parks, most have a pool, cabins, and lots of fun stuff to do.  I've been to the Black Hills a million times so we don't stay there as much any more.  We had a great trip to western Nebraska last summer with lots of history stuff.

In Minnesota you might want to check out the National Eagle Center in Wabasha MN.  http://www.nationaleaglecenter.org/  It's not too far off of 90, and you will drive within a mile of my house on the way there most likely.

There are several Little House on the Prairie sites from the Eagle Center area to SD.  We've been to Burr Oak and DeSmet and enjoyed them.  http://www.travellerspoint.com/guide/The_Wilder_Trail/

We like 1880s town on the way across 90 in SD.  http://www.1880town.com/   I can do without Wall Drug.  But to each their own.  There is an authentic prairie homestead we really enjoyed at the entrance to the Badlands (something you should see)  http://www.prairiehomestead.com/

I'm sure I'll think of more and be along soon with some more suggestions.

  5. That price is way too high for me.  I'll keep an eye out for it at the outlet stores.

While we are talking about things that hold beer from Germany Epcot, I bought my wife one of those plastic take home mugs full of beer while we there there last month.  Thinking back we realized what a great deal that was.  It was only a few bucks more than the regular beer, and ended up being one of the cheaper souveniers we got.  I was thinking I should just start a collection of those.  Cheap, and useful for holding beer.  Anyone know of a site that has pictures of all the ones available and where?

  6. An electric chair for your mom, I don't think that's legal? I suggest a retirement development first.

68 years old, that's only a few years older than me. I better keep a close on what my kids ask me to do.

So how old would mom be now, if you hadn't bought the electric chair?

You two are killing me!  (see what I did there?)

  7. I find it frustrating too.  It's not like a hotel where the rooms are virtually the same.

When I show up at any campground I want to SEE the sites they are trying to rent to me.  If I have a crappy site, I don't want to pay top dollar for it.

Three weeks ago when we were there NONE of the sites on our "want list" were available.  They gave me one that could have been okay.  Went to the loop and it sucked.  Wouldn't work for us with the tent and such.

So I got on the phone to the front desk (thanks FF for putting up the phone list!), and walked around the loop asking about the empty ones that would work.  Within a short phone call I had picked out one I liked and they told me to take it.  I came up later and got the re-printed ID cards.

That's what I plan to do in the future.  Get a list of possibles, and take one.  Then go there and look at them all, and call them back and change it if I like on of the other ones better.

  8. Something that made our trip last month more enjoyable for my mom (68 years young) was the electric chair I brought with.  She wouldn't have been able to walk all that way and enjoy the parks.  While I've got the bus drivers all hating us, it really did make a big difference.  Otherwise she'd be paying a lot of money to sit in one spot and read a book at disney while we run around.

I bought one exactly like this on craigslist for 300 bucks after I was in a motorcycle accident.  http://www.1800wheelchair.com/asp/view-product.asp?product_id=1246

It's so much fun to drive the kids won't let me sell it.
