  1. Here's what I have for an outdoor projector setup:

I have a cheapo home theater system with surround sound that I picked up for no more than $100 at Target. It has a DVD player and 5 speakers with 100w per channel. I bet you could pick up something similar at Best Buy or Costco.

That is plugged into a Dell 2400MP projector [about $300 on ebay, currently] and projected on a 12' diagonal screen [also from Target, http://www.target.com/p/Camp-Chef-120-Outdoor-Movie-Screen/-/A-12276917#?lnk=sc_qi_detaillink ]. I think the screen was about $150 when i bought it but it looks like the price has gone up a bit. It's very sturdy when it's all put together and I prefer it over one of the inflatable screens (we borrowed one once).

So, conceivably, one can be up and running for under $600. The kids love it when we have outdoor movie nights when the weather is nice.

  2. I am telling this all to you now, because we have reached the part of our trip where I put the pork in the crock pot and got it going.

In case you are wondering, here's the recipe that I used:

Originally, I planned to get a cup of root beer from the Meadow Snack Bar.

But, I have seen recipes like this that use Dr. Pepper or Coke rather than root beer.

So, we decided to use something that we call "brew."

That is half Mr. Pibb Extra and half Cherry Coke. That's a drink that the twins invented based on the fact that both of these soft drinks are available at the Trail's End drink machine. We often stop at the Settlement for a brew.

So, I did a TCD tweak to the recipe.

Instead of root beer, I used brew.

After I got the crock pot going it was time to go out for my normal morning patrol.

And that is what I did next.

    TCD

TCD has inspired me. This recipe is on tap for serving during the Pats/Broncos game tomorrow. I've got a bottle of Stewart's root beer and a bottle of Sweet Baby Ray's and am curious see how this turns out.

There is no applesauce. Yet. Hopefully there will be.

  3. [i haven't been shopping in a while] Empty Pantry Red Beans & Rice

    Olive oil

    1 kielbasa or chorizo sausage*

    1 onion

4 cloves garlic (or two heaping spoonfuls chopped garlic)

1 cup chicken or vegetable broth

1 TBSP Creole or Cajun seasoning

3 14.5/15 oz cans Red beans (any type)

3 cups uncooked rice (not instant)

    Your favorite hot sauce

Swirl a couple of tablespoons of olive oil in a heavy pan or dutch oven and heat over medium until hot. Add onion, sausage and garlic. Cover. Saute until onions start to brown, about ten minutes.

Add in cajun seasoning (FWIW, i make my own but you can use Emeril's Essence or some other cajun seasoning) and stir for about a minute.

Add in broth and beans (I drain them slightly but not all the way). Bring to a boil and simmer for 30-45 minutes. Add salt/pepper to taste.

Cook rice according to package directions. Should make about 6 cups of rice when done.

Put rice in bowl. Ladle bean mixture on top. Add hot sauce. Enjoy. Watch food disappear.

*I just made this again last week, but with Andouille sausage. It was even better.

  4. I think we should call the fish feeder people daily and ask if the fish at fort wilderness have been fed. Perhaps someone could ask for a tour of their facility. I want to see someone fill the fish feeder - we need to know when thats done so we can completely document the important role these fish feeders play at FW.

    :rofl2:

  5. A liitle more on the Firehouse closing.

Guests will still be able to bring patches from their local firehouses for display at the firehouse when it reopens. Until then, guests will be able to take their patches to the City Hall.

Products featured at the Firehouse will be available at the Emporium.

The penny press and engraving machines currently at the Firehouse will not be relocated.

Thanks, Lou. I had seen that as part of the other article, but I hope they will use the firehouse for something else and keep up the patch display. That is always a treat, being able to go in and see if I can spot any familiar patches when I visit!

  6. Sad news with my morning coffee today. According to Voldemort and other sources, the WDW firehouse gift shop will close on July 10th.

Being a firefighter for over 25 years, I have always loved this little corner of the MK, especially due to the rotating patch collection and historic nature of the spot. The firehouse is a cornerstone of both MK and DL and one of Walt's original surviving pieces.

I hope they reopen it to the public at some point. My guess would be either a meet-and-greet or some other part-time function, but we shall see.
