  1. Here is a picture of our contribution to the potluck at 4th of July in 2012 I think.

and one of Mama's absolute favorites for breakfast was country ham. She made Red Eye gravy to go with grits when we had it. This is actually a picture from Waffle House which offers a choice of Country Ham or City Ham.

Here was her traditional country ham biscuit from Hardees on the way to the Fort.

Another good southern treat is biscuit and sausage gravy.

Some of the suggestions from my area of the south are peas & butterbeans, greens & cornbread, country fried steak (not the crap you get in a restaurant) , Fried Okra, Chicken and Dumplins, Fried Catfish with cheese grits, cole slaw & hush puppies. Apalachicola oysters raw & fried. Fried shrimp and bay scallops. Oh and fresh creamed corn. I'm hungry! lol We got fresh green peanuts out of the field every year and boiled a ton of them for Mama.

I so miss having good fresh seafood. We have tried fried shrimp everywhere here and yuck. When we head back to the panhandle, we eat seafood!

I reckon I will have to be sure I bring some good food over to the fort when there are gg's! lol

How could I forget Register's sausage and Tupelo Honey!!!

    SLIMEY OKRA

  2. Since most of the people in real meth labs and drug dealers are heavily armed it is safer for the police to break in while they are sleeping and catching them off guard. This is why the majority of raids are at night. If he implied some threat like going postal I could see where waiting until night would be safer too. With it being a hotel it would also be safer for guests as most will be in their rooms sleeping. I get the impression the guy is a bit of a hot head so who knows what else he said. Of course the CM just might not have liked his attitude and decided to get even. You never know.

Bingo.......I think you've got it. :bellringer:

  3. Rod-

    Good article.

A couple of corrections-  First, there are no diesel busses growling their way around Fort Wilderness.  The buses are gas, not diesel, and have been for as long as I can remember, around 20 years of so.

Second, that photo of the Settlement Depot isn't right.  Look at the video posted here :http://www.fortfiends.net/forum/topic/13386-a-couple-old-pics-from-the-fort/?p=403164

The photo you refer to as the Settlement Depot has the tracks on the other side of the building, parallel to the road.  I'm not sure where that photo was taken, but it doesn't appear to be the Settlement Depot.

Just cause I'm curious.....where on earth did you get the idea that the buses weren't diesel?

  4. I didn't know that, Denny.

    Very cool, though.

Even though it's a longer route, I like to drive up 19 and head to Gainesville via 121.  It is much more pleasant than 75.  And, I visit Dunnellon and the Rainbow River quite a bit.  It was strange to see somebody recommend driving right through town there.

You've hit the nail on the head Andrew.....MUCH more pleasant.  I don't get held up much by traffic...usually drive from 70 mi West of St. Louis in 18 hrs total.  That's counting fuel, meal, and other stops so I'm averaging about 65.

  5. Wow.  That is a lot of small towns and small roads!  That FL121 you mentioned is my shortcut that I take to Gainesville.  I've also driven the route you take into Dunnellon.  That road through the Goethe Forest is spooky at night.

Why do you choose to drive this route?  If you're towing a trailer, and you get stuck behind some peanut farmer driving slow on one of those one lane roads, you're screwed.

    TCD

Andrew you may, or may not, know that I drove an 18 wheeler before I retired. The outfit I drove for (Watkins) routed you and you would be fired if caught off route. I used to run in GA and FL quite often and will go to great lengths to stay off of Toll roads and Interstates in both of those states due to my experiences. For example... I was REQUIRED to take I-4 from Orlando to Lakeland and back...a round trip of less than 90 mi.  It was a lovely sunny afternoon during spring break and the trip took just shy of SEVEN HOURS.   The route I now take has good roads, light traffic, lovely scenery and low stress. I don't use I-75 myself but it was less confusing telling him to go that way.  336 thru the state forest has about zero traffic and is wide and straight.  FL 33 is similar.  I usually never hit ANY traffic till Ocala.

  6. I take US84 from Dothan to Thomasville GA.  US19S all the way down to Otter Creek FL quite a ways south of Chiefland.  About 5 mi north of Inglis as the road turns from SE to due south there will be a left turn lane exit for FL121 CR336. The sign will also say Goethe State Forest.  Get on 336 it runs SE and take it till it ends, make a left E on CR40 and take it into Dunnellon.  You'll come to a stop sign where you MUST turn left.  This takes you a couple of blocks past a fire station to a traffic signal at US41.  Go straight across 41 and you will be on FL484E take it all the way over to I75 and head south.  I go past the toll road to exit 314 and take FL48 E into Bushnell Main Street. Turn S or right an go to CR48 which crosses where US301 joins main.  Go left across the RR Tracks to N Florida St/ CR48 and make a right/ south then follow CR48 to FL471.  Make a right/south on FL471 and take it to Tarrytown, to FL50.  Left on FL50E to Groveland.  Watch on your right for FL33S.  Turn on FL33S and stay on it until you see CR474 E  turn left and stay on it till US27 S.  Make a right and take it to FL192. You can only go E...your about 8 mi from World Drive.

  7. Lou says;

    You lost me.

I just don't understand carousels. No matter how hard you whip that horse, you just cant seem to get past the one in front. In fact, which one is in the lead, anyway? How do you tell? You never get anywhere, except I always seem to end up on the side farthest from the exit when it stops. Figure that one out. You ever notice that when you reheat coffee in the microwave, the handle ends up in the back? I hate when that happens. My wife won't drink reheated coffee. She says it's gross. Me, I am not above reheating coffee I made one or two days ago. I have even reheated coffee at the office on a Monday that I made the previous Friday. Speaking of old coffee, in 27 years in the Army I never saw a cook clean one of those giant coffee urns. Never. Nope. I bet there are coffee grounds from WW2 in those things. What the hell were we talking about? Oh yeah - beer.

    That help??

  8. Seeing that you already used the term of endearment "schmuck face", and as there is a one "schmuck face" per thread rule, I can't use it on you, but the question is "what's the easiest/quickest way to get to WL from the Fort".

I was unaware of the "Schmuck face rule", I will however file it for future reference. :flush:  As to the rest of it......I thought your Better Half was the Lawyer of the fambly.

In addition.....what's this I hear about you trying to get the job of towing the EWP around??

  9. BUT in my estimation :bellringer:  Ft Wilderness mensch wins this round of the Fiend hijack competition hands down with that mindless drivel he posted.  It met and exceeded ALL scoring points.  It was...long winded....completely off topic...illogical....slightly creepy... rambling....and made ABSOLUTELY  no sense.  In short A MASTERPIECE!!  The very thing we should all aspire to.  JIM....you da man :bravo: :worship:

  10. You're right, we should have because we took up valuable space that was desperately needed to add more pearls of wisdom about the three ways available to Gwen for getting to the WL?

I'm glad that you have seen the error in your ways :raspberry2: See that you don't let it happen again. :kickinass:    Oh and there is actually one more way Schmuckface. :tounge-smiley:  She could book a room there for the night. :dogsnicker:
