This sounds like a hell of an idea. I hope it goes well.

Well, I made a ressy for 2 nights (Nov 19 and 20). We will be headed to the Fort afterwards for a 8 day stay during Thanksgiving. I think this will be a nice way to start the vacation.

Has anyone stayed here?
It looks nice on their website. They have bike/hiking trails, a museum, historic village, river access, etc. I was thinking about taking off 2 days early for our Thanksgiving trip to the Fort and spending them here. It's only $24 a night for a site. I may even buy a couple of kayaks and throw them in the toyhauler. I could see myself biking and paddling a few days here.

Topsail has cabins and newer larger cottage sized houses. The cottages do not have very much shade though....fwiw

I can confirm that yellow flies love horizontally (slow) moving black objects. Last summer I was visiting a buddy's farm for dirtbike riding. When I would drive down the trail to the track yellow flies would swarm the black plastic mirrors on my white F250. It was crazy. There would be dozens on or around each mirror.

Right after the turn off for the Fort, on the way to Wilderness Lodge, these cops were set up pulling folks over for speeding:
They were sneaky, too.
They had a man out by the road with a radar gun.
And then another down here where you see the cars parked waving cars in to the parking area.
The speed limit along here is something ridiculously low.
They were pulling a lot of people over.
I hope that they were just giving warnings, and not real tickets.
A ticket would not be much fun at the happiest place on earth.
I was pulled over there back in 05. I think that the speed limit there is 35, and I believe that I was pushing 50. My wife and I were headed to WL for breakfast. My wife was pregnant and really showing it. When the cop asked where I was headed my wife said "Wilderness Lodge and I have to pee really bad". :rofl2: He handed my license back over and said "slow down and be careful". :parrot:

I am working more overtime to put back $$ for vacations. We also have cut back on our restaurant visits, but that needed to happen for healthy living anyways. We already tended to camp at local spots, so that really hasn't changed.
-
I just bought a screen room enclosure for our EZ UP. Skeeters are already bad enough here to justify it.

I am not sure if this has been posted over here or not, but here is a good website for non resort campgrounds. I particularly like the link to the reviews and pics at the bottom of the page. I have already found several campgrounds on here that we will probably visit.

Nice! You will like that Sprinter chassis.

My G rated tires are US made.
I could write a book on Chinese ST failures. We used to run them on our 14K gooseneck work trailer. Our tires were never run over 65 MPH, overloaded, or underinflated, and we experienced a high rate of failures. One or two failures a month during high mileage times were not uncommon. I finally invested in some all steel commercial Goodyear G614, and the failures stopped. We have had the same set now for a little over 2 years. I don't think there could be a better example of how Chinese ST tires are just not up to the task of hauling at or near their max load rating, especially in hot weather.
-
I hate Chinese tires too. I just dropped a little over $1200 for a set of G rated Goodyear's for our toyhauler. There is no way I would run a Chinese tire on any heavy camper.

I would like to hate mornings, but my work requires that I get up at 4am. So when I don't work laying in there to 6am is really something for me.

Is it me or was the old show at Epcot much better than the current one? I loved how they would outline the buildings around the lagoon with lasers. I don't remember when it was changed, but I would like to see the old show again.

Don't have a pic, but I love looping on my bike....sometimes with the kids in the trailer too.

Fort Pickens For Memorial Day
in General Camping Discussion and Questions
Posted
Well, it's been a while since we have camped somewhere other than our local CG. Our trip to Cloudland Canyon was cancelled due to the tornadoes. But it's almost time to head down to Fort Pickens. We are rolling out Thursday after work and driving part of the way. I plan on overnighting at a rest area or truck stop, then we will roll on in to the CG. We have not camped there before, but I have visited. I know the CG lost a lot of trees due to the hurricanes, but I picked out a relatively shaded site using Google and pics on the reservations website. The long range forecast looks good. We are almost finished stocking the toyhauler. I bought a full size gas grill from my neighbor, and I have it tied down in the garage too. I hope the new tires, Trail Air suspension, air ride pin box, and hitch all hold together. This will be a good shakedown trip before a trip to FW....fingers crossed. I will take plenty pics for those wondering about the area.
