My Dad used to Manage a small rural radio station. He had a sign on the wall in the booth that read "Before giving the weather, look out the window!"

My mother-in-law has a "weather rock" sitting outside her front door. It is usually pretty accurate.

I was going to post the directions from it, but I found a better set on-line. These instructions work for a weather rock which is tied to a string and hung from a branch:

  • If the rock is wet, it's raining.
  • If the rock is swinging, the wind is blowing.
  • If the rock casts a shadow, the sun is shining.
  • If the rock does not cast a shadow and is not wet, the sky is cloudy.
  • If the rock is not visible, it is foggy.
  • If the rock is white, it is snowing.
  • If the rock is coated with ice, there is a frost.
  • If the ice is thick, it's a heavy frost.
  • If the rock is bouncing, there is an earthquake.
  • If the rock is under water, there is a flood.
  • If the rock is warm, it is sunny.
  • If the rock is missing, there was a tornado.
  • If the rock is wet and swinging violently, there is a hurricane.

We still have not had any rain or wind to speak of, although it is getting cloudier.

I can't wait to hear the weatherman on my local station tell me tonight that today's weather was exactly what he predicted last night.

This is why I keep encouraging my dd to become a weather forecaster. They are always wrong and still manage to keep their jobs, where else can you do this?
