  1. Yodagirl said she was on a trip with her band her junior year.  These kids had just graduated High School.  They were all getting served alcohol in the bars on the ship.  It made for some good people watching, but it's not something I would want any of my kids to do.  This was in the late 90's.  I know DCL won't serve anyone under 21.  This was the old Big Red Boat.  They had much lower standards.

That they did. One of the guys managed to score some alcoholic drinks. Another girl turned 18 on the cruise, so her mom (who was on the cruise) got her drunk.

Did I mention how attentive our chaperones were?

  2. You should go on another cruise! One without 100 unsupervised high school kids! (but I bet you enjoyed that one too)

Haha. Yeah, it was fun. LOTS of stories (that my parents will never hear). ;)

Hey, when was your cruise on the Big Red Boat?

On our last cruise on the Big Red Boat, we had a huge group of High School kids who had just graduated.  Holy Smokes, that was a bad idea!  What were their parents thinking?

Spring Break of 98...I think it was some time in April.

I'm going with they weren't thinking. In my mom's defense, she thought we would be supervised. Each group of 4 kids had 2 chaperones. Our chaperones didn't want to be tied down with kids. Everything went well until we almost missed the boat back to the ship. We got lost in Port Lucaya trying to get back. It ended up involving a concrete wall almost all the way up to a drop in the ocean. We spider-manned it around the end of the wall trying not to fall off the edge, then we ran. Good times.

How funny would that be if you were both on the same cruise, and yodagirl was one of the kids you were probably complaining about?!?!

Lol That would be pretty funny.

  3. Metaldad recently asked me to share post this as he wasnt sure when he would get time to do so. If it has been posted before I apologize.

Beach Boys performing Kokomo on the beach of the Grand Floridian. Added bonus John Stamos on aux percussion.

Loved John Stamos (and Full House). Also loved The Beach Boys. Dad had a boxed set he got for Christmas. I pretty well confiscated it.

  4. I remember those hammocks. I'd actually forgotten about them.

I loved Mickey's Birthdayland. Somewhere, my parents have video of the train ride form Main Street to Mickey's Birthdayland. They had a special song for it, and there were character cut outs long the route. I think Goofy's truck broke down and he was walking. Anyway, we watched the show, as well. I thought it rocked.

  5. Great trip! Graceland is impressive. It's on our list of things we want to do. Disneyland is on there, too, but Graceland is a heck of a lot closer.

Our swing set was very similar to Lisa Marie's - just a different color. The glider looks metal and so does the seat by the slide. Ours was plastic, but we still got to enjoy the metal slide.

Does anyone else remember where they were/what they were doing the day Elvis died? I do. We were on our first trip to WDW.

That's one way to remember it.

    I wasn't born yet.

I also didn't know that Elvis had a stillborn twin or that his grave had been moved.

Wasn't there some controversy about his middle name being spelled wrong on his grave marker, and this was supposedly proof that his death was a hoax?

I have a family member who believes that Elvis is very much alive. She gets pretty mad when someone suggests otherwise.

She might be right. Our auto tech class saw Elvis gassing up his cream colored VW bug at a gas station by the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green. Why wouldn't Elvis be driving a VW instead of a Rolls Royce?

We saw him again about a decade later on Broadway in Nashville. Had to have been him. After all, he was in a rhinestone suit, sunglasses, and packing a guitar. What kind of person would impersonate a dead guy? See? Proof. He's still alive.

  6. Looks like y'all had a good trip so far! I've been on a cruise once (The Big Red Boat), and I can't wait to go back. Our high school band went my junior year because someone thought it'd be a good idea to turn 100+ high school kids loose in the Bahamas. Maybe that wasn't such a good plan...

That roller coaster looks cool. Although there's no way I'd get on it. DH would, I'm sure.

  7. Cool stuff!

Was there a Mickey Mouse Club TV show in the '80's? I assume that it was for the Disney Channel? That was a premium channel that you would have to subscribe to.

I took the TCD girls to the character breakfast at the Polynesian when the twins were still in high chairs. They had not met any characters before, and it did not go well. Mrs. TCD and I ended up having to hold one twin each, as they were scared of the giant mice and dogs wandering around.

There must've been because the magazine talks about behind the scenes and taping. I didn't watch it though. We were too poor for cable until I was in middle school. Had to pay for those Disney trips somehow. :)

Your trip to the Polynesian sounds like our trip to Chef Mickey's when DD was 2. That didn't turn out so well...

  8. We were there the month it opened.

The only thing I remember is the Backlot Tour. I thought it was awesome. I remember the fire truck from Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and of course the Golden Girls' house. Other than that and taking some pictures throughout (and one of the CMs playing a tenor sax who kept photobombing my brother), I don't remember anything else.

The merchandise looks cool. It's seriously been 25 years?? That makes me feel old.

  9. I'm in just in time for the end of your report. Glad you guys had a good time!

    Couple of thoughts:

    - We homeschool, as well. Best thing ever for us.

    - I'd be upset over no picture of paper tickets. In fact, my parents still have paper tickets with extra days. They will jever be used, so the fact that y'all traded them in means y'all are a step ahead of us.

    - Your boys are adorable! I especially loved the Toys Story pictures.

    - We were there for the cake castle. I thought it was cute at the time. Now, not so much. I've heard that it was really falling apart at one time, but not when we were there. Mom really likes it. DH's glad he missed it. I've heard that it really messed with the wedding plans of those getting married at WDW.

    - Good luck with the adoption!

  10. Cleaned out the attic of our old house over the weekend. I took some pictures of some things I found. Not as impressive as some of the pics others have posted, but a little old school nonetheless.

Proof that YodaGirl is (was?) an official member of the Mickey Mouse Club. Come to think of it, there's another certificate somewhere from the mid 80s. Anyway, this one came with a watch (didn't get a pic of it) and the magazine you see next to it. It also came with a sheet of stickers that I may or may not have used to decorate the underside of my storage chest lid when I was 8.

I tried editing that picture, but it's still showing sideways. Idk.
