  1. If you pick a slow night, and a less popular showing time, I'm told you can pay for Cat 3 and you get moved up to Cat 2 or even 1 if it's really slow.  Ticket window ladies won't mention this and will still push the expensive ones at you, but if you are going to be around on a Tuesday or something like that it's something to think about.

  2. Lou, I think you have hit the nail (spike) on the head.  I can't be there today at 1400 ish to grab more, but I can tomorrow.   I'd love to get you as much wood as you think might be needed for a give away.  These chunks would slice nicely into slabs to display the spike on.  I left my table saw at home though.  Would you be interested in picking up a stash of it from my campsite and facilitating the slicing?  I am keeping the long ones for now (if I don't figure out something cool, I can always slice them at home and deliver them to the deliverer down here) but all the rest are short pieces and would fit easily in the trunk of a car.

    Well, I'm off to AK!

  3. As outlined in TCD's thread about the construction permits, work is continuing on the BBQ area.  We got in today and I picked up my Kenny cart and took a quick tour.  Found they were replacing roofs on some backstage buildings directly behind the pavilion between there and the bathroom.

There is a new roof going on the old River Country Ticket booth too.  They were also replacing many of the rotted timbers and supports.  When I was there they were loading up the old wood onto a truck.  I asked what they were doing with it all and they said the were going to throw it away.  Soooo......  I have a bunch of it.  For anyone else who wants some, the guy told me they have to be cleaned up and out of there every day at 1430.  And they will be replacing more of the rotted timbers.  They have not touched the bird cage building yet.

I really have no idea what I'm going to do with the wood.  I have a 4x4 post that is about 7 feet long, and a 2x6 beam that is roughly the same length.  Then a bunch of butt ends.  I'm going to be here until Monday, if anyone wants some of the smaller pieces I'd gladly pass them along.  I'm going to make something with the bigger ones at home.  Don't know what yet.

I took some photos of the work and the wood I got.  Now I have to figure out how to post them.

  4. Jeff-

Note that Grumpy/Dave called it the three way in the original post.

That's what the old timers call that intersection to distinguish it from the four-way stop intersection as you enter the Fort.

That three-way used to just have three stop signs- the buses coming out of the bus stop area didn't have to stop.  There's actually a stop sign there now, so technically it's now a four way, but those of us with a history at the Fort call it the three-way.

I know you've been there many times.  Now you know what to call it.

    TCD

Okay, now I'm confused.  The picture is taken pointing at the intersection, and beyond that is where the new DVC site is going to be, right?  If that is the one I'm thinking of, I understand the three way moniker because there are three roads that come together (or one road with a T intersection).  Where does the fourth way come into play with the addition of a stop sign?  Are we counting the cart path as part of the intersection?

  5. The Red Coconut was mentioned above, and it's the only one I know if in the Fort Myers Beach area that is RIGHT on the water.  My grandfather used to spend his winters there before he died.

Here is the link to their website.  http://www.redcoconut.com/

There are also many reviews on trip advisor too.

Depends on how long he is going to stay and the dates, but normally when we go to Fort Myers Beach every year we just get a vacation rental that has room to park the RV.  Years past we have paid about 900 for the week, and had a one bedroom apartment in a house with a pool, a dock right a canal, and right across the street from the beach.  This year that one was booked, and we got one that is for 1400 and has it's own pool and a dock on right on the bay looking out toward Sanibel.  When you are adding up the cost of these places to park an RV, seems you can get a nice rental for about the same price with a pool and it's own private dock (we usually rent a pontoon boat for a few days and keep it right at our rental).  I can help with some of the places we've stayed if your friend wants that info.

  6. I realize some things will be off limits, but not, all as John stated

Hi Grumpy!  Lou and I came over and visited you in my golf cart last year about this time.

My only experience from DVC is the BLT, and you can't even get on the property without a key, or using the methods of a certain russian uncle.  So my opinion may be an uninformed one.  Even with full access, I can't fathom that parking lot.

I am thinking they used their planning and logic tools for this idea like they did with the other developments.  Who cares if there is another tower next to the contemporary or another resort?  Nobody, cause it looks normal.  Shoehorning that monstrosity into the Fort just doesn't fit.

I'm no corporate wonk, but my guess is they have multiple projects like this in the planning, and only a small percentage get the trigger pulled.  (others in this thread have said that, better than I can)

Even doing the plans and pulling the permits has such a long timeline, they would have to have many in "development" to be ready to move on one when the time comes.  Let's hope this one, when and if it happens, has some major revisions and relocations.

Even moving the BBQ to behind the 100 loop is dumb.  What a noisy unpleasant mess that would be.  Although I guess I kind of like when we are near the movie and campfire at Meadows, so perhaps it would just be something to get used to.

What they SHOULD do is put in some really high end camping spaces all along from the trading post along the beach to the dam.

  7. I've read through this whole thread and have a few thoughts.  Number one, is this thread is EXACTLY why I like this place.  Great details, great discussion, great people bringing out the details.

Number two, yes this will be a wonderful new resort.  If you are staying there, which I won't be able to afford.  So yes the pictures are great, and it will have cool bars and pools and restaurants, all of which we will not be able to enjoy.

Number three, then they put this wonderful new resort that we can look at but not touch, right smack in the middle of our living room.  WTH?  Those buildings are going to tower over any ambiance the settlement had.  It's going to be wrecked and we'll never get it back.   I'm just making reservations for April, and I can't believe how much the prices went up.  We are revising our stay from seven days down to four because it is so expensive now.

Move the whole shebang 400 yards west and I'm on board with seeing the tops of these towering buildings from a distance, but we won't have to live with that crappy parking lot and it's car alarms going off throughout the night.
