They've announced an upcoming refurbishment to the lobby of the Grand Floridian.

My prediction is that they will remove what was once the Garden View Tea Room (it never reopened after the Covid closures), and if you want to go for afternoon tea, you'll have to do so at the new bakery/cafe at the Boardwalk.

  2. Now it's Monday morning. The plan was to rope drop Epcot, but I told the rest of the gang that I didn't have it in me and I would meet up with them a bit later.

Instead, I went to Disney Springs to cross another thing off my to do list.

    b1LLy43.jpg

At 9:30 on a Monday morning, you don't have to try very hard to find a parking spot!

I made a bee line for the Joffrey's near the Boathouse. When I was there in January I tried on two separate occasions to get a drink with a Mickey printed on top. I was unsuccessful both times.

These donuts sure looked good! I did not try one. Have you ever had one? Are they any good?

    xARDtC5.jpg

Fortunately the Mickey printing machine was working this time. And I remembered to use my AP discount too. I forgot, however, to ask for a small, so got more than I really needed. Here's my Mickey on a latte.

    B2eFZz9.jpg

After a few sips he was a little worse for the wear. Is it better to start at the feet and make him suffer, or start at the top so he doesn't feel the pain? Or am I overthinking this?

    OWDejyb.jpg

With that mission accomplished, I headed over to Epcot to regroup.

    uulboqu.jpg

I met up with my sister. She was chilling at Sunshine Seasons while the rest of the group rode Soarin. LPT: There are self-serve pop machines here that dispense really nice cold water. Good for refilling your bottle.

We rode Living with the Land. Our boat had a VIP suite at the back.

    7rcmv5I.jpg

I know, I know, it's for wheelchairs. But I'd still feel like the Queen of the boat if I got to sit there by myself. I'm going to try requesting it sometime and see how it goes.

It felt like snack time after this. The kids took their refillable popcorn bucket over to the nearby cart and got two flavors... though admittedly I forget which ones. And then we went over to the Electric Umbrella so I could get a cronut.

    ip0emD4.jpg

One for me, and one for the kids to share. Mobile order was quick and easy. Worth noting that Electric Umbrella (if it's still open when you read this) also has self-serve drink machines where you can refill your water bottle.

We rode SSE and got stopped in the California garage for a short bit.

    iyl9K4y.jpg

The group split up, and I took one kid with me. He made one of those Coco characters at the kiosk.

    pSrQjcM.jpg

Nothing goes better with sugar than sugar, so we shared a school bread. Man, the chairs in that seating area are LOUD!

    dCbBlLZ.jpg

He wanted to go off and do things on his own, so I was by myself again for a while. And then I discovered that the Play Disney Parks app has stuff for you to do at the Kidcot stations. You have to find a specific puzzle piece and point your camera at it, and then it unlocks a photo frame that you can add to a picture. Like this.

    K0ULr38.jpg

Once I discovered this I figured I might as well try to collect the set.

    Apparently landscape is not supported.

    lp6SSI6.jpg

You can see the puzzle piece over my shoulder in this picture.

    KTjdvAo.jpg

I didn't quite get them all on this day. Still a few left to collect.

    QA8FQGY.jpg

I made a note to myself to do this wine walk some day. But not today.

    D2opguX.jpg

I caught the tail end of the Voices of Liberty.

    0pNgv0p.jpg

Regrouped with one of the kids in time for more sugar! I'd never had these before but heard they were good. The woman was happy to give me an empty cup, so I used a spoon and put about half of it in a separate cup for the kid.

    jc7UqTF.jpg

It's two kinds of slushie and some vanilla soft serve in the middle. Very patriotic and very tasty. I'd get that one again. It's called the American Dream from Fife & Drum.

My sister's MIL took the two kids to Beaches & Cream for dinner. My sister's husband had a nasty cold at this point, so they went back to the time share, stayed in and rested.

I got this picture taken as I left Epcot to go to my last minute dinner plan.

    PebuNFc.jpg

When you find yourself without a dinner plan, there's only one place to go!

    GLUuw14.jpg

I take that picture most times I'm at the Fort. It's been there since I was a kid, so I'm sure that means sometime soon it will disappear.

I rested comfortably while I waited for my table.

    ingrHyg.jpg

I got a table on the lower level near a very large, fairly noisy group. It was pretty dark down there, so apologies for the quality of this food picture.

    NK3B5IO.jpg

Unfortunately this wasn't my best Trail's End dining experience. The ribs were VERY tough, to the point of almost being inedible. And my favourite coconut/carrot salad thing wasn't on offer. My server said they don't make it every day and that it would probably be back the next day. Ah well. Even a bad meal at Trail's End is still pretty good!

About the time I was finishing up, my sister texted and asked if I could swing by the Beach Club and retrieve the MIL & boys, so that's what I did, and that was the end of Monday.

That zoom picture is interesting... how did you get that?!

There is a photopass "photographer" near where I'm standing (I'm facing the Plaza restaurant/ice cream parlor). They're really just a wrangler, because the camera is mounted on top of the building. They tell you where to stand and where to look, then they press the button that takes the picture.

You may see people lining up for no apparent reason - there's a masking tape line on the ground to keep people far enough back that they aren't too visible in your shot.

I've circled the area in red on this satellite view. Castle at the top, train station at the bottom. Tomorrowland on the right.

Very nice beginning to your trip, Africa trek right at the start! The suspended bridge and the vultures I’d be okay with but being that close to the hippo pool would have concerned me. Could they have charged out of the water towards the group? Was there any barrier? I’ve always heard they can be pretty aggressive.

There was a hippo expert with our group at the hippo pool and she was feeding them. I don't remember there being a barrier, other than an embankment. One of the hippos was very food motivated and happy to be fed. The other got bored and left. I'd be surprised if they were interested in charging at the group.

    Moving along to Sunday.

I started the morning off with a quick stop at CVS for dental floss. Such excitement! While I was there I noticed the Halloween candy was out, and this one caught my eye.

    slj4pELl.jpg

Glad it's just the packaging that glows in the dark and not the candy!

After that, it was a drive to the Contemporary. Here's my parking reminder.

    D9KynBt.jpg

We were headed for brunch at the California Grill! I discovered too late that valet parking is included, but I think I prefer to self park anyway.

One of the reasons we wanted to try this was the glowing review from Josh. We were about to find out whether it was worth it or not.

As advertised, those of us of drinking age were greeted with a mimosa.

    TFrdCbo.jpg

They also had some fruity non-alcoholic drinks but while I saw them being offered to other guests, our non-drinkers didn't get them. We asked our server after we'd been seated and saw other tables with them.

The way the brunch works is there's a buffet, but you also get to order a main entrée. Here were our choices.

    7hYFOJN.jpg

Because my sister does gluten-free, she was given a menu that showed her the GF entrée choices. There were exactly two - the omelette, and steak & eggs. She was pretty disappointed to say the least. She asked our server if she could have the lobster eggs benedict but on a gluten free bun instead. The server checked and came back and said yes. Which made us wonder... Why doesn't the menu offer that? Surely we weren't the first people to ask for it?

While they made the entrées, I went to the buffet to get started. Here's a sad little plate of sushi, meat, cheese, and a deviled egg.

    5a6vMcd.jpg

They also had a station that were making these - a cake (muffin?) with a scoop of ice cream, warm bourbon sauce, and some corn flakes. Definitely breakfast food!

    o3Hw1QI.jpg

For the gluten-free, they were happy to give you a scoop of ice cream with the bourbon sauce on top. Yum!

I ordered the pineapple-coconut french toast. I was expecting it to be very rich, but it wasn't. If you order it, ask for more of the pineapple topping.

    i3KQX63.jpg

It was OK, but I kind of regret not going with the pancakes and sharing a bit of each. Apparently you can order more than one entrée, but I don't have that kind of appetite.

Here's how the eggs benedict turned up, which she said was delicious.

    eXWBIpg.jpg

And the men got the bison burger.

    ILXOb1A.jpg

Dessert was this platter to share.

    o8d6F0y.jpg

The little cinnamon buns weren't worth eating, but the chocolate bark and macarons were good. The red things were a kind of fruit jelly, like a gumdrop. By this point we were pretty stuffed anyway.

A note about the mimosas. They did indeed seem to be bottomless. Though our server wasn't particularly attentive so we didn't get to test it. I was really the only drinker at the table. The "juice" in the mimosa was the orange boba balls at the bottom (like in bubble tea), so it was really more like drinking straight up sparkling wine. The kids ordered OJ so I stole some of theirs to blend in with mine.

Josh mentioned in his review that they had a fantastic server and that was part of the reason why he enjoyed it so much. I wish I knew who he had so we could have asked for them, because our server was a dud.

It was a pretty expensive meal, even with TIW. Definitely an infrequent splurge and nothing that I'd beg to do again.

Our plan for after brunch was to head to MK since we were so close. The kids wanted to walk to MK, and my sister and her husband wanted to go back and change. It was at this point that I realized 3 mimosas for breakfast + a rental car = bad idea. So I got my sister's MIL to drive the rental from the Contemporary to the TTC.

Here's our parking reminder at the TTC.

    9RMLHtY.jpg

This was my first time at the TTC on this trip and I didn't realize there was construction going on there. The tram doesn't drop you off near security anymore, it drops you off before the underpass. Not only that, but at the end of the day we found that the signage wasn't very good for getting back to where your car is, especially since there are temporary barricades up. It made for some hot, sweaty, frustrating moments. Not very magical.

We met up with the kids, but first I needed a bio break. I noticed that the stalls near Auntie Gravity's had these indicator signs at the top so you could see if the stall was occupied or not. People clearly don't look at them anyway, because there was still a lineup despite availability.

    Zsf69cz.jpg

We went on the People Mover. I checked out the Tron construction. Unsurprisingly it's made a lot of progress since I saw it in January.

    PhvBlN7.jpg

We went on Buzz Lightyear. I can't imagine why the kids don't want to ride with me, can you? One of the kids Googled how to get a high score, so he got a Galactic Hero sticker and was pretty happy about that.

    9VlNYfr.jpg

There was some interesting construction going on beside the castle. I assume this was part of the pathway widening.

    gZiZVP1.jpg

You know you've raised them right (or wrong, depending your perspective I guess) when you can get kids to ride Small World without a fight. And so we did.

My obligatory "beginning of the ride in case you get stuck and need to know how long you've been here" photo.

    lFUBQjR.jpg

    And my hippo friend.

    CRRDAaW.jpg

The screens at the end of the ride weren't showing names this time.

    cqmzO8s.jpg

We split up for a bit and I went on a little side mission to Pinocchio Village Haus. First up was to get a cup of ice water, and while I was doing that I saw this sign.

    gIZlxAP.jpg

I'm a sucker for glow cubes, but this one didn't tempt me.

My real mission, however, was to go see the wish book. So that's what I did.

    jxFcXid.jpg

    cU183vV.jpg

I didn't add a wish to the book. I'm already far luckier than I have any right to be. But it's nice to know I could put one there if my luck runs out.

I regrouped with some of the family for the next important mission - ice cream! MIL and a kid went and got Dole Whips, but I had something else in mind.

    8fRo35i.jpg

    SSWQQiB.jpg

As you can see it was doing a pretty good job of melting quickly in the Florida heat. I walked from Sunshine Tree Terrace over to Aloha Isle and it's a miracle I didn't get any on my clothes/shoes. Especially considering it stained my hand.

    CSJUGOh.jpg

We went on the Jungle Cruise and saw O2H.

    IIBBDNW.jpg

We rode POTC and a wild Jack appeared in the exit gift shop.

    esAR4We.jpg

I got the zoomy picture taken.

When browsing the Emporium these buttons made me laugh. My husband saw the picture and asked me to buy them for him.

    K0pzad2.jpg

I told him, "You are NOT wearing that to your mother's funeral!"

This Haunted Mansion clock was neat, but not $80 neat.

    BZIxL0s.jpg

We called it a day after that and took the monorail back to the TTC. A pretty decent step count considering the first half of the day was nothing but sitting and stuffing my face! 14.1 km is 8.76 miles.

    CoRFVMo.jpg

And that was the end of Sunday.

  5. We left the park after the Wild Africa Trek and had a rest and a change of clothes. My sister had made us an ADR at Le Cellier, so off we went to Epcot.

    Parking reminder!

    Va8168J.jpg

I had the kids with me - who aren't so kid-like anymore, and after we got in we thought we had enough time for Journey Into Imagination, but we ended up bailing from the line and going straight to Le Cellier. When I tried to check us in they said they were running at least half an hour behind schedule, and they wouldn't officially check us in until our whole party was there. The waiting area was pretty cramped, and there were some unhappy campers due to the delay. We found some seats and enjoyed the air conditioning, and I did the activities on the children's menu.

Eventually we were seated and we had an affable server from near Ottawa - not terribly far from where we live. We impressed him with our knowledge of tiny Ottawa area towns. Arnprior! Carp! Smiths Falls!

Anyway, our plan for dinner was to share some appetizers and have dessert. Part of the motivation for this is that we had some serious eating planned for the next day.

They start you off with this nice assortment of tasty carbs.

    ZJow8fC.jpg

We got one each of their two different kinds of poutine - "signature" and "beef bourguignon". Frankly I don't remember which is which, nor which one we preferred. Suffice to say you can't go too far wrong with fries, gravy, and cheese curds. FYI, poutine is drunk people food. It originated in Quebec as a nice salty, fatty snack to end a night of drinking.

    aL3KCNe.jpg

    zsjMNAn.jpg

Sorry for the weird colors - that's what I get for taking pictures in a dimly lit room with my cell phone.

We also got some brussel sprouts - that don't look much like brussel sprouts. But I assure you they were good.

    D2zODjZ.jpg

    And some mac & cheese.

    olcxAJh.jpg

When contemplating our dessert options we noticed that the dessert menu on MDE looked nothing like the dessert menu we were presented in the restaurant. I assume this happens fairly often. Anyway this was my nanaimo bar inspired dessert. If you've never had a nanaimo bar (they're pretty common in Canada), they're a great little sugar bomb. I took some to Tennessee once for my coworkers and they said they were too sugary. No such thing! And yes, that's Duke Caboom printed onto chocolate. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanaimo_bar

    agTNU0n.jpg

After dessert our group split up. I went on SSE with one of the kids. I forgot to mention that my sister's MIL was with us for part of the trip. She wanted to see Illuminations before it ends, so one of the two kids came with us and we went to the second floor of Japan and watched Illuminations from there.

    gzl40wz.jpg

There was a woman standing in front of us who had some Mickey ears on that were very brightly lit. She'd clearly forgotten they were on because when I asked her to turn them off she apologized and quickly obliged.

After Illuminations was over we made our way out of the park and back to the time share. That was the end of Saturday.

  6. You can see in the alligator (or were they crocodiles?) pic that it had started to rain a bit. In fact, it was wonderfully overcast, and only a light rain, which kept us from getting too hot. Couldn't have asked for better considering it was August in Florida.

    qhqSfNu.jpg

At one point I told my watch I was on an outdoor walk workout so it would track where we went. The map ended up looking like this.

    L3kH9uL.jpg

Part way through the tour you get to take off the vest/harness and get into your private safari vehicle. When we got to the giraffes, we couldn't have asked for better. Apparently giraffes don't like rain, so they all gathered together under the trees.

    URDJ00F.jpg

    How cool is that?

    Look how close we were!

    d3GUFtm.jpg

I should point out that although you are welcome to take your own pictures, they also have someone taking pictures with a good camera, and at the end of the tour they give you a link to download the photos that become available in a couple of days.

The safari truck takes you to a building where there's a bathroom and also a snack.

I liked the floor in the bathroom. Looks like M&Ms!

    LusynGX.jpg

Each person gets their own tiffin for the food. This one has the gluten free label on it for my sister.

    tH7LWyu.jpg

I didn't take pictures of her food, but here's mine.

    ElPTZhw.jpg

The flower is edible, and there's three little containers on the top layer - a curry chicken salad, fruit salad, and cured meats.

    Here's the bottom layer.

    advpatb.jpg

Shrimp, a salmon roll/wrap, and little pitas to go with the hummus. All very good, and also served with POG/jungle juice.

After your break you get back on the safari vehicle for more animal watching.

    ySEZ1q1.jpg

Disney contributes a portion of the tour fee to conservation, and at the end of the tour, each participant is given a rock and told to place it in the bin corresponding to where they'd like their money to be spent.

    K1TNb9X.jpg

These were our tour guides for the Wild Africa Trek and they were great! It was Daniel's last day as a tour guide, as he was about to start a new job as a science teacher. I'm sure he will be great!

    CZSrinJ.jpg

  7. Our morning was booked at Animal Kingdom. Here's my parking reminder, taken at 10 am.

    bHFitFk.jpg

Cross one thing off my to-do list... I saw Kevin!

    gsZhdwt.jpg

But here was the big plan for the morning!

    V8mGRUM.jpg

None of us had ever done this before. When you sign in you have to empty your pockets and put everything in a locker, and if you intend to wear sunglasses or take a cell phone, they both have to have a strap. Fortunately, the CMs have a LOT of straps!

    NS5KuAw.jpg

    Kx1H55r.jpg

After you put your stuff in a locker, you get weighed (no lie!). I'm glad this happened at the BEGINNING of my trip and not the end! You can see the CM hiding the weight in case you don't want to know. The purpose of the weigh in is just to get the right vest/harness.

    JDhOYN3.jpg

They also give you: a name tag, a water bottle, and a little pager-sized audio receiver and earpiece so you can hear the guide during the trek. Here's the back side of our group with us all in our vest/harness gear.

    w2jhzvA.jpg

At certain parts during the trek they attach that umbilical cord to a guide/restraint system. Presumably so you don't get too close or don't fall in. Here we are using it at the hippo pool.

    7kDDBHu.jpg

It was very cool to get up close.

    zXJQdyA.jpg

And a chart for the hippos.

    4s6rWAf.jpg

When you're not attached to the restraint, you walk through some wooded areas on uneven ground. I wouldn't recommend this for anyone with mobility issues.

    a1gO0EK.jpg

This also might not be the activity for you if you're afraid of heights.

    VBoFr44.jpg

Or if you're afraid of vultures.

    69GZK4T.jpg

Or if you're afraid of giant reptiles.

    s5ha8Jt.jpg

  8. I get so many good ideas from other people's trip reports (and I really miss *cough* certain ones), that I thought I'd do another trip report here for your reading enjoyment. So grab a cup of your libation of choice, strap in, and enjoy the ride!

My sister and her family are DVC members and also have a time share. Between these two things and them both being teachers, they'd made plans to be in Florida for a nice chunk of time this past summer. They invited me to join them for two weeks and I gladly accepted. I booked my one-way flight to Orlando for August 16, and a rental car, and we went to town on booking ADRs and activities. I'd drive home with the crew in their minivan on August 31. Everything was set! And then life threw a little wrinkle my way...

My Mother-in-Law died on August 13, and the funeral was scheduled for August 29... in England.

I made arrangements for a flight home on August 26, and a flight to England on August 27.

As soon as I found out, my sister got busy with Guest Relations and was able to move the two things I'd pre-paid and would have missed: MNSSHP on August 27, and the HEA fireworks dessert party on August 28 -  my birthday! She did all of this without me so I don't know how much of a hassle it was, but I'm very grateful to her and the CM for making all the changes.

So now that you know a bit of the background, here's how the trip went.

I had to work on Friday, so I scheduled an evening flight. Here's when it was scheduled to leave/arrive.

    uskbZerl.jpg

When I got to the airport it was pretty busy, but I had no trouble clearing security and customs. Apparently that experience was not the norm, as there was a significant system outage that was slowing customs clearance to a crawl.

    Op7Lq0dl.jpg

My Nexus card was the reason I escaped all the headaches, but I could tell lots of people weren't as fortunate. There were lots of people running to their gates to catch their flights, and lots of people being paged to the gate who were about to miss their flight.

I used up all my luck with customs, however, as my flight was delayed due to a mechanical issue. And then delayed again. And then a plane change and a gate change. We finally boarded the plane only to have a maintenance technician get on.

    IavSioil.jpg

    This did not bode well.

We were in danger of leaving Toronto too late to beat the landing curfew at MCO. They managed to close the airplane door with only 30 seconds to spare.

    9hHwXkal.jpg

We took off almost 3 hours late, and landed well after midnight. The terminal was deserted, the stores closed, and a lot of lights off. But I made it!

I picked up my rental car and drove to the time share on 192. By the time I got my room key and into the room it was almost 2 am. I was hot, sweaty, and tired! Fortunately the next day wasn't a rope drop day.

I like Whirlpool because it's so quiet but I think I heard they are going to pass only, where you'd need Nexus to use it?  Don't remember where I heard that or if it's true.

Yes, Whirlpool is a Nexus only crossing. The card is very handy and there are also Nexus only lanes at several land crossings. Plus expedited lines at many airports as well.

  10. 58 minutes ago, DaveInTN said:

Ok....I have a few thoughts but you were a posting machine today so let's see if I can remember them.

First, that All American sundae looks delicious. I wish I had one right now.

Also well done on the praline sauce.

What's up with those butchered trees in the MK?  I didn't see where you explained that pic.

Did you cross at the Peace Bridge or Lewiston Queenston?

    That's all I can remember.

The butchered trees were clearing for the Tron coaster. It's behind the autopia stinky cars.

On the trip home I crossed at Peace. For a while it was quite a gamble because of bridge construction that had it down to one lane in each direction. There's also Rainbow and Whirlpool (and Queenston) to choose from, so at least I have lots of options!

  11. 28 minutes ago, dblr....Rennie said:

Kudos to you for a VERY BUSY last day you sure packed it in and double kudos ( if there is such a thing ) for that heck of a drive you did the first day I salute you!!!!!!!!!

It's easy to put the miles behind you when you only have one stomach and one bladder to worry about! :-)

i'll be doing the drive north again this coming August with my sister and family, and I don't expect to keep the same pace.

  12. It's now Sunday morning and departure day. Time to head back home to the Great White North.

It's a bit of a long story that I won't bore you with, but normally I'd get up early and hit the road at like 6 am to start the long drive home. But this time I had a Boma breakfast instead. The ADR was originally for 9 am but I moved it up to 8:30 and then when I couldn't move it up any more, I just showed up early and they seated me just after 8 am.

    Sjg3d12.jpg

I have come to realize that the Boma breakfast buffet has ruined all other breakfast buffets for me. There is no comparison.

Here was round one, with a nod to being healthy with a small bowl of fruit. If you do nothing else at the Boma breakfast, make sure you put the praline sauce on your Mickey waffle. Heck, put the praline sauce on everything, I won't judge.

    M8XA6kq.jpg

As I was chowing down a couple was shown to the table beside me and it was their first time there, so I gave her my praline sauce tip. She said they were vloggers and asked if they could include the tip in their video. I had no objections. She wrote down the name of their channel so I could follow them. Spoiler: it never did show up on their YouTube channel.

    MOAR!

    iu2pwmi.jpg

After stuffing myself to the gills, I waddled to my car. On the upside, at least I wouldn't need to eat for the rest of the day. On the down side, I really could do with a nap.

But there was no time for that. It was time to hit the road.

There was a LOT of moisture in the area.

    Ev3nptG.jpg

It rained non-stop from the time I left AKL until just north of Jacksonville. There were several accidents on I-4, fortunately none that affected me at all. Though at one point there was a cop at the side of the road in his wet weather gear encouraging drivers to slow down since the roads were so wet.

I'll spare you the details of my progress, but I made it as far north as Morgantown, where I stopped for the night just before 11 pm. About 920 miles.

    J90OPau.jpg

This is the part that had me worried... There was nasty weather coming for Monday. 15 to 20 cm is 6 to 8 inches.

    QmzlL5s.jpg

Monday morning was another early start. I stopped in Grove City for fuel and it was -16°C (3°F) which was a bit of a shock to the system.

    esIY0V4.jpg

I forget what time I made it to the border, but the crossing couldn't have been quicker. By the time I was passing the city where my sister lives, it was just starting to snow and it was also about lunch time so I gave her a call. It turned out she was taking the kids out for lunch at an all you can eat sushi place and asked if I wanted to join them. That was a no brainer! I met them for lunch and handed over the purchases I had for them. We had a good time catching up.

By the time I hit the road after lunch for the last 35 miles to get home the snow was REALLY coming down. I'm glad I didn't leave any later than I did. There were many accidents, the roads were getting snow covered, and I was pooped. I pulled into my garage at about 2 pm pleased that I'd dodged the worst of it, and better yet that I don't have to shovel!

Thanks to those of you who followed along on my little adventures.

  13. I still had some time before my next Mountain's Fast Pass, so I headed to do some of my usual favorites.

    The camel wasn't spitting today.

    X9CkN1h.jpg

If these totems started spitting, that guy in the scooter is in for a big surprise!

    cKWKJjz.jpg

I thought maybe the Jungle Cruise would be running by now. But nope... CMs were into tape art, so they must be pretty bored.

    fqtNA4q.jpg

The weather wasn't great today (about 62°F) but still better than home.

    pyoqwpY.jpg

Since Jungle Cruise was still a fail, I did the Tiki Room and then CBJ.

    JRZGpUy.jpg

I was feeling peckish so headed over to the ice cream parlor. Here's my All American sundae with no whipped cream. Mmmm. Molten peanut butter.

    uZKaBop.jpg

I waddled over to the People Mover after that. You can tell it's a busy day when there's a guy holding a sign that indicates the end of the People Mover line.

    fY97KM1.jpg

People Mover = happiness. Plus it's scientifically proven to help with sundae digestion.

    HGXEHwu.jpg

The Wilderness Must be Paved! Trees coming down for Tron construction. Bonus hawk in the tree.

    yV5MHuY.jpg

It had clouded over which prompted me to make another trip to the locker for a costume change back to my warmer coat. You can see how overcast it is in this castle picture.

    cvbfYBj.jpg

Finally it was time for my BTMRR Fast Pass! Always nice to have a FP when the standby line is at 80 minutes.

    Pvfdqa7.jpg

Being the wuss that I am, I requested a seat right at the front. The guy dispatching the mine trains and I had a nice chat about the old Naked Gun movie with Leslie Nielsen. How random is that?

    8vH5htC.jpg

I took a picture at the Photo Spot for my collection.

    sEaUCEd.jpg

But there was also a Photo Pass photographer at the exit, and they seem to do a better job...

    sP4rw3i.jpg

I'd managed to move my Space Mountain FP up quite a bit (thanks to the tip I first saw here) but I still had a bit of time before then, so I did a spin around the Carousel of Progress.

    ZgoOLI6.jpg

This seating area near the Tomorrowland bathrooms was freshly blocked off and was so recent that it still smelled like paint. It sure wasn't like that the previous time I'd been in that area. I have no idea what they were doing there.

    RjKkwiK.jpg

There was a Tomorrowland artist at work. I can't draw anything with a pencil right side up, nevermind draw anything with water upside down.

    t8wDDzq.jpg

I think I took this picture to show that the standby time was 90 minutes, but of course didn't manage to capture that. So you'll just have to trust me.

    r9mFqVP.jpg

The guy in front of me had a very unusual backpack.

    ywQbNIA.jpg

No matter how many times I ride this I never manage to look directly at the camera. You'd think I'd know by now.

    WMqTpSi.jpg

I knew the moving walkway had been removed due to construction but it was still a bit of a surprise to have this long, carpeted walkway.

    2sb3mx9.jpg

I did the People Move yet again and was rewarded with TWO hawks in the tree instead of just one that I saw the last time.

    P5w6veL.jpg

After the People Move I went and did the Laugh Floor and thank cod I did! Because this time I finally got the one with Sully, Mike, and Boo!

    P9Ddpz6.jpg

After the Laugh Floor I did Pirates again. I seemed to have particularly bad luck on this trip for getting the ride photo to show up in my Photo Pass. And I don't know if it's because the ride photo wasn't working, or if it wasn't able to read my Magic Band. Shrug.

Having done all 3 Mountains now, plus a good assortment of other favorites, I was about ready to call it a wrap so I headed towards Main Street again. I stopped and listened to the Casey's Corner pianist for a while. If you've never heard this guy (who has been playing there forever) you owe it to yourself to try to see him.

    BvIRGN6.jpg

I decided what I really wanted was a beer and a burger for dinner. This was a little harder to come by than I would have thought. The Plaza Restaurant wasn't taking walk ups and there were no reservations available. I sat near the Plaza bathrooms and investigated the menus in MDE to formulate my plan. While I was sitting there I noticed there were a lot of VIP groups around. I took this sneaky pic.

    gSFjyq3.jpg

Apparently there was a football team in the park, but I couldn't tell you what team it was.

After staring at the phone long enough I finally had a plan! I texted my sister to say "last call!" and ask if there was anything else she wanted from the parks before I left. She asked for one last picture of the castle. Well that's an easy enough request to fulfill.

    H8rIqI3.jpg

With that mission accomplished, i sadly headed for the exit.

    EneuAzw.jpg

Any bets on where I was headed for my beer and burger? Don't worry, I won't keep you in suspense.

I walked over to the Contemporary and headed up to the Outer Rim. I asked the bartender, "what are the odds of being able to get a burger to go with a beer?". He said, go over to the Contempo Cafe and order your burger, and they'll give you a puck to put on your table over here and they'll deliver the burger to you. Just be warned that if you want ketchup you should get it when you place your food order and bring it with you." Well that was the best news I could have hoped for!

    I ordered my burger.

    DvqqVhW.jpg

    I grabbed some condiments. These...

    9c8ivbh.jpg

    But not these...

    DIJXIxa.jpg

I sat the puck on my table.

    15UODdN.jpg

I got the beer I wanted.

    ixBodsN.jpg

    I admired the view.

    60olpra.jpg

And just like magic, a burger arrived.

    JfXo9O6.jpg

    I'd call that a win.

After my beer & burger I thought about heading to the car, but I decided I wasn't quite done yet. I went up to the monorail. Monorail Lime limped through the station slowly. It did not stop.

    2aeSrvB.jpg

I got off at the Poly and wandered the gift shop. Being a fan of the Tiki Room I liked this keychain. But didn't like it enough to buy it.

    t9jzFHX.jpg

I still had room for one last treat.

    kw6ItgN.jpg

It was cold enough outside that I decided to eat it inside this time.

    HwSQzrY.jpg

I paid with a gift card that I'd put something like $100 on at the start of the trip. I was pleased to see this balance after paying for my Dole Whip. Well done, me!

    pDbqZ15.jpg

That felt like a pretty good last full day to me. No regrets. I walked from the Poly to the TTC and hopped in my car and headed back to the time share.

  14. My goal was to make it to MK on Saturday morning for rope drop. Here's my parking reminder that I took at 8:37 am.

    ETnb5DM.jpg

I was on the ferry by 8:49.

    Ze0ODSk.jpg

And at the passholder tapstile by 9:08. So I was about 10 minutes late. Ah well.

    hK0Su0X.jpg

First thing I did was head to it's a small locker after all.

    fpiLxG6.jpg

    sUSPc7O.jpg

In case you're interested in the prices, here's what they cost in January of 2019.

    tPeTMKL.jpg

Amongst other things, I wanted to stash a lighter coat in the locker in case it warmed up. I did end up switching my coat a couple of times throughout the day, and leaving some purchases there. This was the only time during the trip that I used a locker but it was handy - especially since it's not convenient to just pop out to the car and leave things there and come back.

On my way up Main Street, I stopped for a bit to listen to the Dapper Dans.

    GrwByB3.jpg

Do you remember the cigar store Indians? There used to be two - one on Main Street, and one in Frontierland. Well they both seem to be gone, or at least they were on this trip. I have a number of pictures of me with those over the years, but this year the best I could do was a selfie with the baseball player at Casey's Corner.

    j97vmvl.jpg

I wanted to ride Jungle Cruise first, but Jungle Cruise had a different plan. It wasn't operational at park opening, as you can tell by these CMs standing by the entrance.

    SvBGQnr.jpg

I went to the Haunted Mansion instead. Not a bad substitute. I didn't quite nail this photo. Will have to work on that.

    J8HhPV8.jpg

From there over to, yes, you guessed it... Small World.

    X4DMftc.jpg

    sHqgmjf.jpg

The screens in the final room weren't showing anyone's name from their Magic Band. Weird. It had been working on my previous rides.

    3YUMiJM.jpg

It may sound hard to believe, but I actually had a bit of a plan for this day, and the plan was to do all 3 mountains (Splash, Thunder, Space) and I even had Fast Passes for all 3.

But about the time I got on Small World, the first wrinkle emerged...

    Wvd9Bnc.png?1

I decided to wander over that way anyway.

My watch told me at 10:30 am that I'd already reached my exercise goal for the day (30 minutes). That doesn't happen to me too often when I'm at home!

    QzNc3TN.jpg

The good news is that Splash was back up and running, so I used my FastPass.

There was a bowl of Ziploc bags. I snagged one. (Spoiler: I should have snagged two.)

    EzDW9sJ.jpg

The bad news was that I was right at the very front and I got more than a little bit wet. Shoulda put the bag over my head...

    Fs9GsyX.jpg

Not far from the exit, the ride stopped and the lights came on. I was there maybe 5-10 minutes before we started moving again.

    dhyeX3w.jpg

My photo pass picture from this ride looks the same every time. What can I say? I'm a bit of a wuss.

    9Jirr0n.jpg

After this I thought I'd swing past Jungle Cruise and see if it was running yet. It wasn't, but the Picture Spot never closes.

    BKuvgov.jpg

I strolled past Club 33. I need to be rich. Or have rich friends. Sadly, neither are likely.

    p2ajWEG.jpg

I looked up at the Club 33 building and wondered... how did that green coffee cup get there? Why is it still there? Seemed like bad show to me.

    nNz7CLw.jpg

I stopped in at the Evil Siren. The guy in front of me had a very particular dislike that he wanted the world to know about.

    fYLkJ1j.jpg

    Caffeine achievement unlocked.

    uqQn3eu.jpg

It was time for a little shopping after this to take care of some promises for the folks back at home.

First up - one nephew wanted the apple pie caramel apple, so I headed to Big Top Treats. She asked me if I wanted it sliced, but I said no, I wanted the stick removed and put into a container. She said it wouldn't fit but I said that was OK. Pro tip #1: If you put it in the container sideways it fits just fine. Pro tip #2: Remember all those stickers I'd been picking up for my sister? They help keep the container closed quite nicely! Like this.

    PwJqou7.jpg

Next stop was Mickey's Star Traders and this time the purchase was for me. These tea towels were too cute to pass up.

    ymAQXyO.jpg

Then to the nearby Lunching Pad for two cream cheese pretzels - one for the spousal unit, one for the other nephew. And you remember that Splash Mountain Ziploc bag? It's the perfect size!

    foXLzZD.jpg

I didn't want to carry all this around with me, so I headed to the locker.

Phineas and Ferb were meeting people at the flag pole.

    qYgwHHd.jpg

After leaving my purchases in the locker, I stopped in at some Main Street shops. My BIL is known for his ties, so I made note of these two potential additions to his collection.

    kjAARh5.jpg

    vjSOmbE.jpg

I noticed they had a new (to me) Haunted Mansion Dooney bag size. I used my sunglasses for scale since I didn't have a banana.

    oHDTCPc.jpg

  15. Figured I should start off this next update with a cartoon from Savage Chickens...

    chickenanythi.jpg

Maybe I can wrap this up before my next trip in August!

It's now Friday, and my departure date is Sunday.

Somehow, despite being in the same time share unit for almost two weeks, it wasn't until this day that I noticed someone had previously had some fun with the provided hair dryer.

    yxeguMt.jpg

    Another day, another parking reminder.

    axtF4wK.jpg

When I got to security I noticed that the flags were flying at half-staff.

    sScNwCy.jpg

I asked a security guard if he knew why they were at half, and he said it was because of the recent bank shooting in Sebring that killed five people. A rather somber reminder that there's a world outside the most magical place on earth.

I did my usual ferry ride over to the Magic Kingdom and you can see it was a nice sunny evening.

    hvvxgCS.jpg

Once again near the entrance there were some of the rare characters as part of the Mickey & Minnie celebration.

    ZCGn12F.jpg

I pressed on, since I had a Fast Pass to make, but also couldn't resist taking a picture of this "service" animal.

    xgbGsPT.jpg

As I walked past Casey's Corner, my watch buzzed and asked me if I might perhaps be tempted to stop in for some corn dog nuggets. It's kind of funny/creepy to get these reminders that the Mouse is always watching.

    wmbYsth.png

I never get tired of this.

    GtmkYrD.jpg

On my way to my Haunted Mansion Fast Pass, there was a Muppets Great Moments in History show happening. If you haven't seen this, it's worth checking out.

    zOdCd5l.jpg

My husband got himself a 3D printer and one of the first things I asked him to print for me was a Magic Band puck holder for my Apple Watch. I sent him this little video of the puck holder in action while using my Fast Pass for HM.

It was a lovely night. 16°C is 61°F

    tICg03x.png

After the Haunted Mansion I stopped into Memento Mori. This bag was neat and caught my eye. When you undo the zipper you get the longer version of the stretch room artwork. Clever!

    Lh4TV6W.jpg

My digital bread crumb trail tells me I did the Jungle Cruise after this, but I didn't take any pictures. I mean, how many pictures do I really need of the back side of water anyway?

Then onto it's a small world, where I of course took my obligatory entrance/time stamp photo.

    Zr1Q8jR.jpg

After that, my crumb trail tells me I did POTC and then I stood in line for this photo much longer than I would care to admit.

    DLrRhBJ.jpg

The photo wrangler was kind of... rude? Inconsiderate? He really gave me a hard time about being alone and wanted to know where the rest of my family was. I don't think he was joking, but maybe? Anyway, the experience left a bit of a sour taste.

I then continued my tradition of leaving the park during the fireworks.

    gPViKik.jpg

    IRwfmav.jpg

I walked from MK over to the Contemporary. At the bus stop I saw this sign. Does anybody know how accurate these displays tend to be with their arrival estimates?

    xJZH2rC.jpg

I browsed some shops then got on the monorail to the Poly, where I got off and walked down to the end of the dock in time to catch the Electrical Water Pageant. (Sorry Lou) I pretty much had the entire dock to myself, it was great! There were two other people who had some serious photo gear on a tripod. I had a lousy cell phone that took lousy pictures, but I enjoyed the dose of nostalgia anyway. And I hereby share those lousy pictures with you, dear reader.

    3oQrIcX.jpg

    Ywgo7aw.jpg

From the Poly it's an easy walk to the TTC where I hopped into my car and called it a night.

Tomorrow is Saturday and it's my last full day and I had an ambitious day planned.

  16. Now it's Thursday. I was rudely awakened in the morning by a pretty loud thunder storm rolling through.

    MzZkJ92.png

My sister managed to score me a 12:50 pm FP for Slinky Dog Dash. I hadn't been to DHS since the new Toy Story Land opened so this was my first time. At lunch I drove to DHS.

    rJNF1ub.jpg

Looks like the gondola work was chugging right along.

    iMvCh6C.jpg

I hustled my way over to SDD. The standby line was at 80 minutes.

    JszM13Z.jpg

I asked to be seated near the front (as previously mentioned, I'm prone to motion sickness) and I got seated beside a Mom whose husband and young daughter were in the row behind me. The daughter (maybe 5? I'm a lousy guess of age) was VERY unhappy about being there. The parents were trying to reassure her that it would be fun and she'd be fine, but that only made her cry and scream louder. You can't see the kid in the Photopass picture, but just imagine an unhappy camper.

    xOCCSzk.jpg

This picture never did show up in MDE, so about a month after I got home I filled out the online form to have them search for it, and in no time at all they had it linked. I don't know how they do it, but any time I've asked them to find a missing photo, they've come through for me.

After that I headed to the Trolley Car Café to grab a carrot cake cookie.

    Kb56uHP.jpg

I had a 5:30 ADR at Homecomin' at Disney Springs.

It took me two tries to get out of the DHS area. I have a rather poor sense of direction and when Waze told me to take the exit... there were two quite close to each other, so of course I took the wrong one. I ended up right back in the same parking lot where I started. Fortunately (?) there was a CM there so I got to tell him, "I'm an idiot and I'm lost and I'm just trying to get out". Second time was the charm and I made it to Disney Springs.

I sneezed at the exact moment I took the picture for my parking reminder. I could have taken another non-blurry shot, but it was just too funny, and I kept the original.

    LcYBhoF.jpg

It wasn't a long wait for my table. I got one right near the kitchen so that provided me with a bit of entertainment. I ordered a beer while I looked over the menu and contemplated my options.

    QuHC9k3.jpg

After much deliberation, I decided to go with the regular "Art's Famous Fried Chicken" dinner. I saved a piece of the chicken for lunch the next day.

    FfaVm7J.jpg

I guess I don't have a very refined palette for fried chicken. I thought this was OK, but not so great that I'd want to go back and spend that much money for fried chicken. I've heard their hummingbird cake is amazing, but huge, so I'll try to go back another time when I've got someone else with me to help finish it.

Next up I went to the World of Disney store to pick up these bowls for my sister as a thank you for making me FPs and putting up with my endless texts. These new food/snack themed items are really cute.

    Xc5o4ul.png?1

I saw this license plate in the parking lot and was surprised to see they were all the way from Manitoba! That's a much longer drive than my 19 hours and 15 minutes.

    dBKhoTG.jpg

I made one more stop before going back to the time share. I went to a gas station to fill up the tank... Departure day was coming up soon.

And that was the end of Thursday.

  17. 2 minutes ago, DaveInTN said:

I think I've asked this question before on this board, but does Disney overall not have an issue with adults ordering kids meals?  Obviously not at a pay-one-price restaurant like a buffet, but in the sit down restaurants where you order off a menu, do the menus have any language like "12 and under please" or similar?  Or do they take the position that the kids meals are fine for anyone with a smaller appetite?

You're right that there's verbiage for the kids meals. It says, "Kids' menu items for children ages 9 and younger." But I have never had any trouble ordering a kids meal as an adult at Disney. I've been denied at other restaurants in the real world, but never at Disney.

  18. Let's press on since there's not too much left to go.

It's now Wednesday and it was a nice day. 25°C is 77°F.

    3gatbFX.png

I went for a walk in the afternoon. There's a Golden Corral nearby. This sign makes it sound like they have a hotel. I call dibs on sleeping in the mashed potatoes!

    3kQ0t2u.jpg

Stroll map for no reason. 3.57 km is 2.2 miles.

    ZNNxFlj.png

Later on, I headed over to Epcot. The usual parking reminder.

    unJVef6.jpg

    tyRt0xT.jpg

I took another journey around Spaceship Earth. Greetings from the future!

    p79Vqt1.jpg

I stopped in at Club Cool. They seemed to offer a lot of "Please Try Another Flavor".

    Y87byZB.jpg

    I grabbed myself some Beverly.

    bDin15R.jpg

Just kidding! I totally had the pineapple Fanta beside it. That stuff's good.

From Club Cool I headed over to World Showcase. The paint by numbers canvas that I contributed to earlier was pretty much done. Here's how it looked.

    cgif9zW.jpg

I put my name on a waiting list for a table for 1 at Rose & Crown. I have pretty good luck getting seated there without an ADR. While I waited, I poked around the shops in England. My sister's kids recently saw the Holy Grail for the first time, so I made note of this shirt.

    yQEGYSU.jpg

    Picture spot!

    3QN9zqx.jpg

In short order I was seated, coincidentally enough at the exact same table I was at the last time I ate there. This reservation slip was interesting for a couple of reasons.

    HvfsFjz.jpg

First, I've never noticed the notes section having a description like that. I assumed they used that because I didn't have a buzzer? Second, it lists me as an adult and yet... this is my kids meal bangers & mash... with rum & coke.

    ZzzYQfY.jpg

The adult version doesn't come with the Mickey mashed potatoes. This is the perfect amount of food, especially since it still leaves room for dessert. And though the kids meal says it comes with dessert, I've never received it in previous visits here. I don't know why that is exactly. But anyway, I got the dessert tonight! This is the kids trifle.

    LtpZ8Cs.jpg

I asked my server what she calls the sprinkles on top. Much like "pop" vs "soda", I knew there were some regional differences in the nomenclature. Some people call these "jimmies", and I thought maybe she would call them "hundreds and thousands" as my British spousal unit does. She told me she calls these "Mickey magic". Fair enough.

After dinner I stumbled on a Photopass photo op that seemed to have a fairly short line, so I got in it. Worth it!

    qLn0dXz.jpg

I'm not sure why I did it, but I did Turtle Talk with Crush. Since it was close to closing time, it wasn't a very busy show, and most of the audience seemed to have English as a second language. But the person doing the Crush voice was great, and as I recall even had a joke in Spanish. Well done, dude playing Crush!

I didn't stay to watch Illuminations. On my way out I stopped at guest services for two reasons. My sister asked me to get her stickers, so I asked him if they had any stickers and he gave me a big stack of cool Figment stickers I hadn't seen anywhere else. Nice! I also asked him if there was any particular schedule for the Muppet Mobile Lab, because after stumbling on them once a year or more ago, I've never been able to catch it. He said nope. Bummer.

I took the required Spaceship Earth photo at night.

    TmaETjZ.jpg

It felt a little too soon to head back to base camp, so I decided I would ride the monorail around in a circle to the TTC and back. From the monorail platform you could see the fireworks from Illuminations. When I got on the monorail, there was a family in my car with a stroller.

    Y3BDETV.jpg

Of course I chuckled to myself because this was all I could think about.

    7p27.gif

I told my Apple Watch I was doing a cycling workout so that it would track my location, speed, and distance. Here's the map it made.

    1bvKeuI.png

That was a nice little diversion.

Now a short tram ride back to my car and that was the end of that. I got back to the condo and discovered... Remember those cool Figment stickers I got? Yeah, I'd lost them already. They must have fallen out of my back pocket somewhere in the short distance between Guest Relations, the monorail station, and my car. That'll teach me not to put them in a safer spot.
