I'm not sure an overnight in PF/Gburg area makes sense on a drive from Indianapolis to FL. It's pretty far off the path, and the traffic can be unbearable in and out of Pigeon Forge. I think it would take too much driving time for an overnight and add a lot of stress for a young family....I'd look for an overnight spot closer to your direct route. But definitely plan a trip to the Smokies at some point!
First of all Welcome!
I agree with Dave, any campground that you would want to consider for a future visit would be so far off the route.....I assume you would be coming south on I75 which makes the detour over to the PF/Gburg exit that much more out of your way. Definitely worth a visit to the Smokies for camping in the future, just not practical for an overnight visit.

Roberta,
Sorry, No trip report. In a nutshell here is why we did not like it:
Technically it is not a loop, but rather a one way path that runs parallel to the main road. We were on the road side of the 600 loop and had no room. Our picnic table sat halfway on our site and the back part of the site beside us, it would not fit on the concrete. We normally place our picnic table behind our camper when the site is narrow, in this case the (very busy) walking path was less than 5 feet from the back of our camper, no room for the picnic table. The road that runs through the 600 loop is extremely narrow and on several occasions we had to spot for other campers as they moved in and out to avoid hitting anyone's vehicle. On two occasions we had Motor-homes arrive that could not fit onto the site they were assigned. No comfort station in the 600 "loop". There were a couple of sites at the beginning that appeared nice and roomy, but the majority were not. It reminded me of staying in a really old state park campground that was designed for 20 foot campers and station wagons, yet they insisted on assigning 5th wheels, and Motor-homes to these sites. Don't get me wrong, we like state parks, just not at Disney prices. Thankfully, this was not our first experience at the Fort, as I am sure it would have been our last.
We use the FF app when checking in to verify size and space, the measurements for this site were accurate, but due to the angle the site meets the road, you lose some space on one side at the front, for example the left front tire of my truck was on the site pad, the right front tire was in the road. Distance between sites were minimal, thus adding to the cramped feeling.
Although this has nothing to do with the 600 "loop", we had a group of "that- party, loud outdoor TV, bicycles in the road, no one is watching our kids, the world revolves around me -crowd" show up for the weekend and take up 4 sites across from us. This just added to the cramped feeling, and made us dislike our specific location even more.
-
Up until this last trip, I would have agreed there are no bad sites. However our site request from now on will state "anything, but the 600 loop". Big Bear loop is our favorite near the comfort station. We usually just request a range of sites that we prefer.

First, Welcome! There is a ton of useful information here and many folks willing to answer ANY question you may have. Regarding the toll road pricing, we were there in the fall and the pricing was $3 per axle, Truck counted as one axle =$3 and tandem axle trailer counted as two axles = $6, total of $9, to pass through the first toll on 429? turnpike. The exit tolls were $1.50 total. For our next trip we are ordering a SunPass Sticker so that we don't have to mess with the line of paying vehicles. These prices may vary depending on the time of year, but this was our experience in the fall.
TCD is correct about the nicest camping destination. We constantly compare all other campgrounds to the Fort, and have yet to find one any better.
We have reservations for the end of October, and are waiting to see if some things open up to maybe get in a little earlier. Maybe our paths will cross.

The locals want everyone to know that Pigeon Forge, and Sevierville are open for business. Please do not cancel reservations in these two towns, or make plans to go somewhere else. That area survives on tourist dollars and although Gatlinburg was the hardest hit, there are a lot of families that have businesses in all three towns. Even though Gatlinburg is closed, and will be for some time, the other locations have vacancies. I was in Pigeon Forge today and it is business as usual, just without the Christmas shoppers.
For those of you who are familiar with the area, below is a link showing what areas are affected.

Anchor Down is a wonderful hidden gem out of the hustle an bustle of the Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg Parkway. We have stayed their many times and I can tell you that they do it right from the sights, landscape, views, amenities and treatment from the staff. We do not go into Gatlinburg, but occasionally do go to Dollywood. You can take the back way to Dollywood and it is about a 35 minute drive from the campground. The best thing is when you checkout you do night have to fight the parkway traffic to get back to the interstate. A quick 3.9 mile trip and you are back to the interstate!
While they may not have many tall trees they make up for it with everything else and they are continually investing in the property year after year. It is an ideal place in Spring and Fall before it gets too hot, but we have been there in the middle of summer as well. Just try to get on the upper level or a sight where your patio is facing the morning sunrise. This way you will have evening shade. If you are interested in staying there book well in advance as they are usually full and holidays are booked a year + in advance.
Agree that it is a great CG with great staff and noticeable reinvestment in the amenities. We have stayed several times as well, both in the middle tier and up on the ridge where the tree line is. It is our opinion that mid June to the end of August is a no go for us, as it is HOT. With all of the asphalt absorbing the heat during the day, evenings are still very warm. This is a spring or fall destination for us.
It is also an upper end resort, as they do not allow Pop-up campers or hybrids, no tents. Basically anything with fabric is not allowed, solid walls only. If you read their "rules" section it is quite extensive. Not trying to be a downer on this at all, just trying to point out PROS and CONS for everyone.

My sister and her kids live in Knoxville and we camp in the Smokies a few times a year. So far our favorite campground is Anchor Down RV park. The sites are amazing, lots of good family friendly stuff to do at the park. Not the cheapest park around but well worth the cost.

It's also far enough away from Pigeon forge and Gatlinburg to not be in that mess, but close enough to get to it with limited driving.
I agree with everything said above as we also like Anchor Down, with one exception. It is HOT, almost unbearably hot during the summer months. There are only about 12 sites with limited shade and the rest is in an open parking lot surrounded by black asphalt. We have agreed to return for spring or late fall camping as the facilities are very nice and the staff is first class, but we just can't take the heat from May-August.
Not bashing the place in any way, just wanted folks to know our experience.

I had heard the same thing, but wasn't sure how reliable it was.
I have heard Art Briles' name thrown around as well as Kiffin again not sure sure how reliable that is. I do think that Kiffin will end up as a head coach again.....somewhere. I just hope he fails againSomeone down the line will think they are desperate enough to want him as a head coach, and they will get what they deserve.

I'm in, as we are also talking about a trip out west.

Tybee Island was my favorite part of our trip to Savannah, mainly because of our dinner at The Crab Shack "where the elite eat in their bare feet". Mrs TN22 would probably say the history walks downtown were her favorite, and our kids favorite were visiting all the candy shops in the downtown square area. This has been several years ago but we look forward to going back soon.

Glad to see you are back, along with DIT.

I have a reminder on my calendar to check availability for Bald Ridge CG Memorial Day weekend 2016. Is there a GG planned?

Reviving this thread to let everyone know that Gatlinburg Jellystone is now Imagination Mountain Camp Resort. The Landry's still own it so I don't see much in the way of changes (which is good) just no more Yogi bear.

Thank you for all this info! We are from Jacksonville, so very familiar with Florida weather :) Hopefully it won't be THAT bad. I am so excited. I went ahead and booked the partial site!!! We're ready to go! Now I'm googling like a mad woman! These are all awesome tips!!!!
Welcome!
No need for google when you have Fort Fiends. All the Disney and Fort information you want in one nice convenient place along with nice helpful people who have most likely "been there, done that". Just ask.

New Green Acres is in Walterboro. Nice stopover, long pull thrus and right off the highway. They also have after-hours check-in and I can't remember them ever being full-up.
If you want to go further, stop at Jacksonville North / St. Marys KOA. It is on the Georgia/Florida border. We drive it from northern Maryland. They have free pancakes and waffles for breakfast. My husband loves the pancakes and I love the waffles. They make the batter from scratch. Believe it or not, we drive there for the breakfast. The owners are great and you are personally escorted to you site, even at 10:00 at night.
We have stayed at both of these. Waltersboro is great for us if leaving late in the evening. If we leave mid day we like the KOA. We like the KOA due to it being closer making the second day part of the trip minimal.

This picture always comes to mind when folks mention over tensioning their WDH.

Our stopover on our last trip to the Fort was the KOA in St Mary's/North Jacksonville. It was a nice park and appeared to have several folks staying longer than an overnight stop. There was a lot of things to do in the immediate area according to the brochures. The sites towards the back of the park seemed to have more room and the sites on the first 3 rows were more for the overnighter.

Epcot - La Cava Margaritas - must go inside for them, not the outside vendor ones
Epcot- Germany Wine & Cheese Shop - Spaten Dopplebock beer
Epcot - France - Orange slushy Grand Marnier

We are hoping a spot opens up for that week. Fingers crossed.
