  1. I don't know what makes the smell, but I love it. It has smelled that way as long as I can remember -- and I can remember back close to when the Fort opened.
  2. Hey, I know Lancaster. I used to work at a theatre In Newark back in the late 90s.
  3. Here is the luggage in the post-show of Space Mountain. Note the Mesa Verde sticker -- the desert location (with the oranges!) in Horizons. I'm definitely missing me some Horizons right now. Sigh.
  4. I remember watching the demolition - one of my saddest Disney memories.
  5. I agree - great video. I have watched some ride-through videos of Horizons over the last few years, but I really enjoyed the history section at the top of that video.
  6. That should give the answer away relatively quickly! Watch (or listen!) at the 6:00 minute mark...
  7. Here's the Horizons logo: And a close-up of the gravity wheel in Mission:Space:
  8. Ding ding ding! It was indeed Carousel of Progress! However, I had another part of the ride in mind as the addition to Horizons -- one that was prominently featured in the Magic Kingdom version of CoP...and still is!
  9. This reminds me of some fun Horizons trivia... Horizons could be considered a sequel to what ride? What major part of that ride was included in Horizons?
  10. I have not seen the hidden Nautilus in the rocks -- haven't had much time in New Fantasyland yet. Very cool! Actually, I did mean Space Mountain. As you leave the ride, the stickers on some of the luggage you pass by in the post show have travel stickers on them from some of the Horizons locations. Come to think of it, there is a tribute to Horizons in Mission: Space: the Horizons logo (if I remember correctly) is on the center of the spinning space station in the queue.
  11. Point taken, but someone in Disney -- Imagineering, for example -- wants us to remember them. Just think of the many tributes to these rides in the parks: The Nautilus inside Pooh's treeMr. Toad appearing in both Owl's house in the Pooh Ride and the Pet CemeteryThe numerous references to Horizons in Space Mountain And so forth. And, yes, the slow deaths of 20,000 Leagues and River Country have been painful to watch.
  12. I don't think any of those rides were failures. Some had maintenance issues. One was simply an advertisement for an airline. Two others went away to add more thrill rides to Epcot. They were all good rides -- and much heralded -- in their days. Times change and rides need to change with them - I understand that, but I love the ride history!
  13. On the way home from a trip recently, DramaMama and I were listening to a CD of Disney background loops and ride audio. I was especially fascinated by the full ride audio of Horizons, one of my most beloved and missed attractions. It got me thinking... With all of the virtual reality and simulator technology available today, I would love to see Disney create a ride that simulates the experience of riding extinct attractions. Think "Sum of All Thrills" meets "Star Tours". You would choose your experience when you come in from a selection of available rides, go to your simulator, and voila
  14. Running as Tigger was a blast. I retired that costume for the last Disney marathon. I ran instead in a custom running shirt with a giant handlebar moustache on it to match the one on my face. That was entertaining too. I think I might need some Fort Fiend inspired costume for next year! You're right -- it does start feeling much warmer when you run. It sure is hard waiting at the start line on cold days though! Thanks so much for the kind words! I am still amazed that I have done that many marathons in only about 12 years or so. It just proves that the proper amount of commitment, f
  15. Glad you liked it! I have always wanted to run one of the Food & Wine Festival races, but have never had the chance. I look forward to hearing how it goes for you! I always have to keep a relatively close race on my schedule to keep me at all focused. I just added two 10Ks at the end of this month to help my marathon prep for November. I (sadly) did not write trip reports for my other Disney marathons. I wish I had -- especially when I did the Goofy. That was a lot of fun. I'm planning to write a detailed trip report this January as I go for Goofy again (and camp at the Fort!)
  16. Just got my finish line photo from the Tupelo Marathon. I think if the race was any longer I might have actually melted. I should probably post this in the weight loss forum as my "before" picture. I need to run more. MUCH more.
  17. I hate to admit it, but that bag is awesome. Nobody tell my wife I said that, okay?
  18. That was a failed attempt to make MK more extreme by turning the waterways into a skate park. Seriously, I do seem to remember being there many years ago when at least part of the waterway was drained for the rock formations to be built in front of Tomorrowland.
  19. We are huge fans of Boma but have never made it "across the hall" to Jiko. I love African flavors, so this place is definitely high on my list. Of course, I may have to sell my plasma to afford it...
  20. Good news all around. I still don't think digital video has the richness of film. The technology is getting there (and I shoot plenty of digital video), but I applaud Abrams for going old school.
  21. Well done! Another thread hijacked in the name of cinnamon rolls!
