Construction Begins on Shanghai Disneyland Castleposted on June 29th, 2013 by Thomas Smith, Social Media Director, Disney Parks Several months ago, we shared a first look at a model of Shanghai Disneyland Park that included Enchanted Storybook Castle, the iconic central attraction of the entire theme park. Today, we’re thrilled to announce that construction work on the castle is now underway. In the photo, you’ll notice the first concrete piles that will support Enchanted Storybook Castle being installed at the site. When work is completed, it’ll be the world’s tallest and most interactive Disney castle.The Castle will include entertainment, dining and performance spaces as well as a magnificent winding staircase in the heart of the castle that’ll lead guests on a “Once Upon a Time Adventure,” featuring Disney Princesses. New Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle of the Sunken Treasure ride announced for Shanghai Disneyland based on movies, set in new Treasure Cove land At the Walt Disney Company Annual Meeting of Shareholders, Disney CEO Bob Iger made the surprise announcement that Shanghai Disneyland will feature a new version of the classic Pirates of the Caribbean ride. Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle of the Sunken Treasure will prominently feature characters and settings from the 4-movie film franchise inspired by the theme park attraction. It will surely include Captain Jack Sparrow as a main character, but also likely to feature many of the supporting roles missing from the rest of the Pirates rides worldwide. Closer look at Enchanted Storybook Castle with ride, restaurant, shows in biggest-ever theme park castle for Shanghai DisneylandIt’s been just over three years since Disney first revealed Enchanted Storybook Castle as the centerpiece of Shanghai Disneyland. Since then, details about this under-construction theme park have been slowly revealed. Set to open in late 2015, Shanghai Disneyland will include an area called the Garden of the Twelve Friends and an entire land based on Pirates of the Caribbean. Now, in a recent presentation for the 2014 BIM Awards, Walt Disney Imagineering has unveiled thorough details of their architectural design work that has been created for Shanghai’s Enchanted Storybook Castle – the biggest theme park castle Disney has ever developed. Enchanted Storybook Castle will include a grand staircase, restaurant, areas for an outdoor stage show with fountains, theatrical lighting, and fireworks, salon, store, garden, character areas, and two attractions, one walk-through and the other a boat ride. Its 196.8 foot height will make it even taller than Cinderella Castle. We are constantly defining and redefining themed entertainment, and we do that not just in the technology behind our attractions, but also in the way we design them. With that in mind, we are pleased to share that Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI) has recently received a prestigious professional honor for the innovative design and technology practices that have been used in the development of Enchanted Storybook Castle, currently under construction at Shanghai Disneyland. The American Institute of Architects presented its Technology in Architectural Practice Award to WDI for its successful implementation of Building Information Modeling (BIM). While traditional building design uses 2D drawings and elevations of a planned building, BIM adds three dimensions (height, width and depth) and is a virtual representation of the actual building to be built. Embedded with data, this digital model can be linked to schedules so that designers can see the construction of a building over a period of time. The image below represents a snapshot of the BIM model. “Our commitment to collaboration, teamwork, and mutual success enables us to create those magical, innovative experiences in a way that only Disney can do,” said David Van Wyk, WDI project management and integration executive. “When the whole organization is thinking about reinforcing each other’s efforts, it allows individuals the ability to focus on what they need to do to accomplish our shared goals.
