  1. I grew up in Florida abs have swam in rivers, creeks, ponds and lakes. I have camped on sand bars on the river even after riding in the boat and shining the gators lying on the sand bars. I have seen kids playing in the water at the Disney beaches and thought parents were crazy for letting their kids in the water because of the bacteria, but I never stopped to think a gator night get one of them. Personally, I think a no swimming sign was too vague, even to warn about bacteria. Beware of gators would keep parents from letting their kids in the water I bet. My heart aches for this family. It could have happened to me or my child many times over and I'm a good mother who knows gators are everywhere.

  2. I agree, if you are going for "special," then do California grill. I would definitely plan on sharing. Chris, Edward and I went for our thanksgiving dinner. We each had one drink, app, entree and dessert. It was over 300 without tip.

Over in the doctor Phillips area there are a bunch of cool, trendy places. They see not cheap either, but it has been fun trying some of them out. It's not too far from the fort either.

Most important, wherever y'all choose, I want to go too!

We had a pretty major update to the site today. While we're still getting everything settled, all the articles, posts, and PMs from before are still here- they might have just moved around a bit. Give us a bit of time to get everything back where you'd like it to be.

    IF YOU CAN'T LOG IN:
As part of the update, we had to consolidate login names and display names. If you were used to logging in using one name and seeing your posts under a different name, then you may find it difficult to log in. For a variety of security-related reasons, I chose to keep the display names. (Some of you were logging in with your e-mail address, which is fine, but I don't feel right putting your e-mail address out there in public view where it can be harvested by spammers- which is what would have happened if I had kept login names.) If you can't log in,
    HERE'S WHAT TO DO:

    1. Use your former display name to log in with.
    2. Your password hasn't changed.
    3. If you can't remember your old display name or if it's not working, shoot me an e-mail at cwmajors at gmail dot com with as much of it as you can remember and I'll get you working again.

Actually, I have always logged in with my OLD display name. It would not let me do that. I had to use my current display name.

  4. Thank you all for your comments and thoughts. Good news is the VA will replace. Bad news it will take time. Good News a friend has a wheelchair he can use. Here is the post Ed made today. This has been truly emotionally devastating. For those of  you who know him, you know he should be angry and ranting away. He's not. He's sad and it is just ripping my heart up.

    30 mins ·

4 days, 4 races - did Dopey again. 5K in a pushrim chair and the 10K, Half marathon and full marathon in my handcycle. Over a year with an injury; basically, no training; you would think I would be excited and going to all the post race parties ... but I'm not.

Instead, I have been depressed beyond measure. When I returned to my car at OKW (Old Key West Resort), I found that someone had stolen a wheelchair from a disabled veteran ... MINE! I no longer have my primary method of getting around for any distance.

Yesterday, I was totally in a fog, and didn't really do what needed to be done ... and Disney dropped the ball by letting me go off in that fog. Today, I went back to get the paperwork, and found out none had been done. NOW, there is a statement and a Case Number from Orange County SO - Office Betances was so helpful in getting things done. Initially Disney Security wasn't so helpful ... until a manager from OKW stepped up and got things rolling. Disney sent their own investigator over to prepare a report, also.

Now I can go to the VA, and get things moving in order to get a replacement ... which could takes a couple of months. Meanwhile, Charles stepped up and offered me the use of one of his wheelchairs. Thank You!

I am feeling a little bit better now because of the outpouring of support from friends and total strangers. For a while, I had a poor opinion of the human race in general. Thanks everyone that has posted or commented about this - you can't understand how much this has actually meant to me.

  5. To me if you are not a resort guest then you shouldn't be at a Disney resort. If you are a resort guest then you should be allowed to go to any of them freely.

I also think all buses should have magic band scanners. If you're not staying on property no ride to any resort.

I hope by resort guest you are also talking about ADR's at resorts. We live local now and frequently go eat. I agree though, it's sad that it is coming to this.

  6. BIG RANT: While my brother was doing the marathon this morning a low-life, sorry, piece of crap stole his wheel chair off the carrier on the back of his car in public, in broad daylight. Yes, Disney is not the magical place where you and your belongings are safe anymore. He was parked in a handicapped parking spot at Old Key West, a Disney resort hotel. The people who took it obviously did not know or care if they left a disabled, veteran without mobility. Thank God Ed is not completely dependent on the chair to move around. It does limit him to just the house and a short walk in a store. He did not get to go celebrate completing 5k, 10k, half marathon and a marathon on his hand cycle in 4 days at down town Disney because he is unable to do that much walking, especially when he had just finished the marathon. I am so upset for him. Thank God I am not able to get my hands on whoever did this or someone would be getting me out of jail.

If stuff is not safe at a regular resort, then you know you better secure your property at the Fort!

  7. We ate here a couple of weeks ago. I'm not generally a huge fan of asian food, but I am now a huge fan of Morimotos! Here are a couple of pics from our meal.

These ribs are fantastic! I ate some that we had leftover the next day cold and they were still tremendous! These were $36.00 and well worth it! You can order them as an app and get 3 for $14

These crab rangoons have no resemblance to any I've had at a chinese restaurant. OMIGOSH, They were soooo delicious. When they say crab and cream cheese, they mean sweet, succulent fresh crab with a barely noticeable amount of cream cheese to hold them together and the apricot sauce goes perfectly. I want some more now just writing about them. They were $10.00 and well worth it to me.

The Kakuni Pork Bao was amazing. I know pork belly is the buzz word around right now and most the time leaves me not overly impressed. This pork belly is the best I have every put in my mouth. Awesome deal for $8

I was not impressed with the lunch bento box special. Not bad, just not wow! I could go back and eat rangoons, ribs and pork baos until I pop and that's probably what I will do!

  8. Speaking of other ticket increases, the local news just had a piece about Disney going to demand based pricing. Higher prices for busier times, less for the slower times. So basically, they'll price out Joe Middle Class from taking his family when they are out of school and the Mr. & Mrs. Got More Money can better enjoy a less busy holiday time.

Doesn't that just make you feel the disney magic?    NOT

  9. They are the best when it comes to sucking the money from the bank account.

Some folks like the idea of the photopass being included with the ap. I know there are many  like Ed and I that might take a few pics, but really how many pics of us in front of the ball or the castle or on a ride do we need? No big investment on their part there.

Plus, if there is no sharing with friends and family, that does away with much of the photopass sharing. Big win on their part.

They blocked Christmas and Spring Break on the gold pass which should be equivalent to what I have now, a regular AP. As a teacher and the mother of a teacher, we will be going during those horrible times while my son can be here. I'm sure there are some who are ok with that. I call it BS.

I will say that Ed and I definitely get our money's worth living right here. He usually goes at least twice a week. I go at least 2 or 3 times a month. Of course, we spend money while there too!

I think the photopass for ap holders is more of a perceived value added than any real value. They win again. Raise the prices significantly while really giving nothing in return.

Of course, after looking at the Disneyland pass prices, I'm glad we're in Florida.

I want to say to heck with it, I'm not renewing, but when folks come to visit us they want to go to disney! We'll see what next renewal time holds. I know that for mine and my son's pass my payment will go from $70 for both to $96 for both. I can't imagine those who have to pay it all at one time or who have an average sized family.

I don't think this was Walt's intention. Yes, I know he was a business man, but he was a family man. I don't have a problem with them making money, but it is getting to the point of sucking blood from turnips. I know a mother who drove all night from the panhandle to bring her 2 kids. They slept in the car until the park opened. Spent the day at MK and ate food she brought with them. She then loaded them up and drove back home after sleeping in the car for a bit. She saved a little every week for months to pay for the tickets. That's not how it's supposed to be.

  10. Mama was not a recipe girl either so I learned by watching. Even when I use a recipe I just wing it for the most part and make changes as I go. The bad thing about that is if you make something really good, you have no idea how to recreate it!

Disclosure: Usually I take a shortcut somewhere in the meal. For instance in that country fried steak meal, the biscuits were Mrs. B's. Not as good as homemade, but when you are frying and making gravy there's not a lot of time to make biscuits! :)

My Mama said you have to have "good hands" for biscuits and dumplins" sometimes I have them, sometimes not. I think it's a matter of being gentle wit the dough.

  11. You know I'm not a good recipe girl right?

    Ingredients

    Self Rising Flour

    Lard or Shortening

    buttermilk or milk

Preheat oven to 450 to 475. Put flour in a biscuit bowl or just whatever you have. Put in some lard. Use your fingers, a fork or a pastry thingy to cut the lard in. You want small little pieces. Make a well and add the buttermilk and start bringing together til it forms a ball. Don't over handle if you want flaky biscuits. Plop on a floured board and gently roll out about 1/4 inch or so thick. You can use a biscuit cutter or just a glass about the right size. Butter a pan and place biscuits almost touching each other. Bake until browned, fluffy and not mushy about 10 to 15 minutes.

    OR

Mrs. B's Frozen biscuits are a good substitute! Bisquick actually works pretty well too, just add a pinch of baking powder.
