The Cabins at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort are becoming the next Disney Vacation Club property at Walt Disney World Resort. The current cabins at the resort will be torn down and rebuilt as refreshed hideaways. This project between Walt Disney World Resort and Disney Vacation Club is part of the overall refreshment of Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground and is projected to open in 2024. There will be no impact on the campground sites at the resort, but the cabins will close in phases as the project begins.

More than 350 new cabins will replace the existing cabins nestled across the 750 acres of scenic woodlands. The cabins will be built with an eye toward the environment. That means utilizing the footprint of the existing cabins instead of developing more land and taking advantage of more energy-efficient features. Each proposed, stand-alone cabin offers spacious accommodations, sleeping up to six adults, and features a bedroom, bathroom, living room, full kitchen, and private patio. Expect them to feel very similar in layout, but refreshed. A select number of cabins are also expected to be dog-friendly.

The current cabins are rustic and feel like they belong at the resort and the new cabins will capture that same charm while being updated with new interiors and allowing more natural light inside. Disney says, “Design concepts offer a fresh take on the current cabin experience and are inspired by the resort’s idyllic setting, while also paying homage to the resort’s unique culture and heritage through the magic of Disney storytelling.”

As with all Disney Vacation Club resorts, the proposed cabins will be open for reservations to all guests. This means you don’t have to be a DVC member in order to enjoy a resort you may have loved for years and years. However, it is based on availability. More details on the project including the start of sales and rental bookings will be released at a later day.

Enhancements are also expected for the resort pool and walking trails. Trail’s End Restaurant just closed as part of the enhancements which will expand the dining experience at the resort. Crockett’s Tavern is also going to be part of the enhancement process, but more news on all enhancements will be coming in the future.

Assuming the project is completed, this will be the 17the Disney Vacation Club Resort and seemingly solidifies there’s no chance Reflections – A Disney Lakeside Lodge will be built at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground.

Thanks. We will hope for the best. Both of the girls were treated poorly by Disney during the pandemic, and both had previous offers to return to lesser roles that they rejected. Working for DCL, though, comes with some next-level perks and opportunities, so this will hopefully go well for her.

Congrats to your daughter, TCD. We too loved our time spent at the fort, but I don't see us going back for quite a while. The last annual passes we bough (ca. 2017?) were about $800. As you said, though, Disney always wins.

We've been traveling around the country more lately looking at colleges, and taking in the national parks. Looking at maybe a trip to Ireland next year if the world doesn't fall apart before then.

That pricing is actually not very much more than the only option out of state guests had to pay under the old AP structure.  I personally am surprised that it isn’t more.  People know how to stretch an AP for almost two years’ worth of travel, and these things are going to sell well.

I'm purchasing the "Hard Pass" this time around

  4. Officially canceled our trip for the 50th. Too much uncertainty in Florida, too expensive, and we're really on a downward spiral with feelings for the mouse lately.

Plus, we just lost my father and need to get my mom on solid footing. Way too many other places to visit and see, life is too short.

  5. Our apple tree has been EXTREMELY prolific this summer. Enjoy our favorite Apple Crisp and Apple Butter recipes below.

    Apple Crisp:

    (4 servings, can be doubled)

6 apples - peeled, cored and sliced*

    1/2 tsp cinnamon

    1 cup brown sugar

    3/4 cup quick oats

    3/4 cup AP flour

    1 tsp cinnamon

    1/2 cup cold butter

    1. Preheat oven to 35 degrees.

    2. Toss apples with sugar and 1/2 tsp cinnamon to coat; pour in to 9" square pan (if doubling recipe, use 9x13 pan).

    3. Mix brown sugar, oats, flour, and remaining 1 tsp cinnamon in a separate bowl. Use a pastry cutter or two forks to mash butter into the oats mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. Spread over the apples to the edges of the baking dish. Pat the topping gently until even coverage.

    4. Bake in preheated oven until sides are bubbling, about 40 minutes.

    - Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

    Instant Pot Apple Butter:

    Yield: 3-4 pints

    1/2 cup brown sugar

1/4 cup apple cider (NOT apple juice)

    1/2 tsp ground allspice

    1/2 tsp ground nutmeg

    1/2 tsp kosher salt

    1 tsp vanilla extract

    2 whole cinnamon sticks

    5-6 lbs (or more) apples*

    1. Add all ingredients to IP insert except apples and cinnamon sticks.

    2. Core and slice unpeeled apples into 6-8 pieces and add to bowl. Add enough apples to fill IP insert to "MAX" line.

    3. Pat down well. Stick cinnamon sticks down into apples.

    4. Cover IP and turn vent to "Sealing". Set IP to "Manual" for 8 minutes at High. When cycle is complete, let pressure release naturally for 15-20 minutes and then manually release remaining pressure.

    5. Take off lid and carefully remove cinnamon sticks from apples.

    6. Use an immersion blender until mixture becomes smooth, You can also use a food processor or blender, in batches. Be sure not to fill blender more than half full. Add blended mixture back to IP.

    7. Turn IP to sauté and push the 'adjust' button to LESS'. Simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring constantly, until thickened to desired consistency.

    8. Turn off IP and let cool . Store in an airtight container and refrigerator for up to 3 weeks or freeze for up to 6 months.

    * Our apple tree is a Macoun, which is awesome for both of these recipes, but you can use whatever type you like.

  6. I got this info from a music management guy that I met at the fort that happened to spend a month there a few years back.:

The music at the Fort comes from a bunch of albums. Several tunes from fiddler Aubrey Haynie are in the rotation. Punch his name in Amazon and you'll see the 3 albums he's put out. Another great album is from Strength In Numbers: The Telluride Sessions. Includes Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Bela Fleck, Mark O'Conner, Edgar Meyer. Another is Bela Fleck: The Bluegrass Sessions. There are various super old-timey tunes including a couple from Oswald Kirby, the late dobro player for Roy Acuff. I really wish they would make a CD available with the "Soundtrack of the Fort". I'm suggesting it to the manager there again. Maybe even complete with a few toots of the ferry boat in the background for good measure! Hope this helps.

    Love the Poly!!

No fall trip for us this year either (boooooo), but we're still planning to book for late fall 2021.  Not only is it WDW's 50th but it's our 25th anniversary also so it's perfect timing!

Yes! We're at 24 next year. We've never been able to stay at the poly before, so we're going all out to be there for the actual 50th. Should be fun - and completely nuts I'm sure. Glad we got our reservation in before they shut everything down this week - I hit 499 days and dialed it right up!

That makes me sad to hear because it's our favorite. I know the chef has changed.

Artist Point was by far our favorite before it closed; Cali Grill was always great too but harder to get in to. It's definitely slipped a notch. Other than the view, IMHO it's not worth the cost. Go to Morimoto Asia for better sushi and Le Cellier or Don Shula's for better steaks....

  9. Having visited it twice last week, I have a few thoughts also. I'll preface it by saying we did NOT do the smuggler's run ride so this is more about the cantina and some general observations.

First time (Wednesday) it wasn't super crowded, and we had reservations at Oga's. It's really tough to get your bearings unless you've been there a few times, and even then it's confusing. CM's were handing out maps at the entrance by Baseline Taphouse.

You check in and then wait in line for your name to be called. We stood at the bar and had a great time. The staff and bartenders were great and really seem to enjoy the interaction with customers. Our friends had been to GE in California and said it was completely different - the staff there seemed to just be going through the motions, moving people through the place and were less than friendly. The drinks were great (they say it's a two drink/45 minute limit but we had three rounds and were there at least an hour +, no pressure from staff) and the themeing was awesome. It's a really fun vibe.

I definitely recommend downloading the Disney Parks Play app and taking time to check out the land using the app. Lots of stuff to scan and hack, as well as jobs you can do to earn credits. I would spend quite a bit of time just going around and using that as a way to learn the layout of the place. Really cool.

Second time (Friday) we found the land to be totally overcrowded and overwhelming. It was super packed and there were incredible lines everywhere - for SR, all the shops and other areas. We had another reservation at Oga's and were seated in one of the alcoves with other guests. Different experience. It was cool to be seated with others and discuss the land and its themeing, but it wasn't as much fun as standing at the bar. Again, they say it's a two drink/45 minute limit but we hung out for a bit longer and never felt rushed.

I will say that it's a bar - the staff was great with kids, but it's still a bar. There's no food there like at Trader Sam's (an overpriced bar mix and a REALLY lame cheese plate - save your $$) but there are nonalcoholic drinks. It would probably behoove them to institute adult only hours like at TS once more stuff opens up. We saw lots of bored little kids.

The drinks were excellent, but everything is premixed in bulk and dispensed from taps. Like TS, you can order drinks with or without purchasing the accompanying mugs EXCEPT for the beer flight. Not sure why that is, but we saw people buying the $80 overpriced flights several times...

There were lots of interactive street characters on both days, including Kylo Ren, Chewbacca, imperial officers and lots of stormtroopers. That was very cool. Also, there is a ton of shade in the land.

Themeing was A++. I think the difference between this land and Pandora is that more people are familiar with SW and probably have certain expectations about what characters and references they want to see in the land versus Pandora. Pandora works because you can just enjoy it for what it is. GE/SW has so much backstory that it's hard to hit everything, and this is just a place and moment in time in the SW universe. Overall we enjoyed it, but it's definitely claustrophobic when it gets crowded.

    Anyway, just my $0.02.

  10. Ate at the California Grill last week. Service was good, but the dinner was just OK. The menu has definitely changed and seems kind of disjointed - they've got the cedar plank salmon and bison steak now from Artist Point on the menu, and the rest of it seems like a collection of hits from other places. The bison steak was excellent, but my wife had a lobster and scallops dish that was way overseasoned and the flavors didn't seem to mesh well. No specials, either. Our friends had some sushi, which was excellent, but overall it seems to have dropped a notch.

We haven't eaten there since Brian Piasecki left, and I don't know who's running it now, but it just seemed off.

They seem to be much more lenient on the dress code, too...
