  1. I was talking to a friend who was talking to an electrician at the Fort. He was saying that he thought Disney bought an existing campground and then added to it to become what is now Fort Wilderness. I hadn't ever heard of that and figured this would be a good place to ask about it...

So? What was the very start of Fort Wilderness? Blank land and Disney built a campground? Or an existing campground that was bought by Disney?

  2. We are definitely looking at Oahu because of Aulani and Pearl Harbor.

Right now I'm seeing a few 2-3 bedroom houses available for right about $2,000-2,500 for a month on the Big Island. That and some of the parks on there sound really cool (getting to see actual lava!).

I haven't priced our a rental car for a month or even how you get from one island to another, but that's on my list of things to figure out. My food budget is already inflated having a tiny fridge, but I do understand it'll increase quite dramatically with this trip.

  3. This idea is firmly in "zany idea"-land, but it's gaining some traction. My wife and I bought into DVC so that when we end up out west this year, we are thinking of flying to Hawaii to Aulani for a week's vacation (figuring costs would be cheaper flying from the west coast vs. anywhere else).

But, I got thinking- if we already flew to Hawaii and are nomadic anyway, why not spend a month living/working from there. I think I should be able to find a passable yet inexpensive VRBO/furnished home rental for a month (that comes close to matching my current RV site budget of $1,500/month).

Aulani is on the island with Pearl Harbor & Honolulu. I'd want to spend my month on another island ... I think / just because.

But, I seriously know zero about Hawaii. A few searches have yielded rental results on the Big Island.

    Thoughts? Opinions? Witty commentary?

I drove through there once on a scouting mission. It did look pretty level. Other than that I was not impressed.

I actually liked it and could see myself staying- but my type of RVing is often different than what other folks are looking for. If I was staying longer, I didn't like how close to the highway it was. And, the lack of pool and decent playground were real negatives for me. But, the staff was very friendly and the spots themselves were spacious.

There's just not much to it and I could see how you were unimpressed.

  5. I ended up not asking for a back to back spot and put this request in via Jason:

"We also need to put in a request. The (friends) want to be on loop 400. So we need our request to be side by side sites on 400 that will fit two 40' fifth wheels with slides on both sides.

If we can't get onto 400, I'd prefer to try out one of the secret "buddy" sites. Loops 600, 700, 800 would be nice for proximity to the marina."

We are on the 1300 loop. Fortunately, I'm easy when it comes to sites AND it was super easy to park. But Disney really missed the mark with the request. I assume they had a reason for it and we are side by side, so that's good.

  6. We usually stop at Pecan Park off of I-95 in Jacksonville, but it was all booked up yesterday. We headed a little further down the road to Stagecoach RV. It's $42/night for a 50amp/water/electric/sewer site. It's a long pull thru (60') and pretty level. We ended up on an end spot and have a great yard. The bad- there's no playground or pool (usually not a problem for overnights, but we're here for 2 nights).

Yes, the Disney Visa gets you Disney Rewards Dollars. As you use the card, the rewards dollars build up. Just before your trip, you contact the rewards department and order a Disney Rewards Card. You use that card to spend your rewards dollars.

Once you have a Rewards Card in hand, I think most concierge desks can reload it for you. (Though, my wife handles this aspect of it.)

  8. We are coming down to the Fort with another fulltime family in October. We have camped together a few times and prefer sites where we can park so that our doors face each other vs. the usual "neighboring" sites.

I know the Fort doesn't have any back-in/pull-in buddy sites where your doors face each other. And frankly, we use our truck often enough that I wouldn't want to pull in and have it trapped (plus,

I don't like my sewer being in the shared yard).

What we did in NJ was that we got 2 sites that backed up to each other and then we just utilized the space between the rear of the campers and bad a nice long "yard".

Are there any premium loops that but back against another loop close enough to do the same? Or (and I think this is the case), would it be like walking through unkept woods to get to each other?

The irony here is that I love the wooded/separation of sites at the Fort and now I'm asking for the exact opposite!
