Easter Weekend Mud Bog 2011

Recommended Posts

After the news about our original CG being flooded out last weekend, we all scrambled to make new plans.  Some of us decided against camping with more rain predicted for this weekend, others decided to stay closer to home where it was going to be sunny and warm (what fun is that?).  Then there are the few brave (some may say foolish) ones who said hell with it were still going to Gettysburg rain or shine!  If you have not already figured it out by the name of this trip report, it is raining with over an inch predicted for tonight alone.

One the way into Granite Hills Campground, we drove by the Gettysburg Campground (the original one we planned on staying at) and noticed that it was able to reopen this weekend.  We could see the sites we had reserved from the road and they were right on the edge of a very swollen creek.  Then we arrived at Granite Hills and the skys started to open up.  After we checked in we were escorted by a very confused maintanence man who was not sure of where our site was.  Once we got to our site, I got out and scouted it out and noticed the path in was going to be a little muddy and slick.  All I have to say about getting into the site was thank god for four wheel drive.  While I was setting up our rear bumper neighbor showed up and introduced himself as Dblr (yeah our first fiend encounter!!)  Then the show really began.

rdancmom and starla showed up and attempted to get into the site next to us following the same path we took into our site.  Well as soon as they got passed out site they sunk into the mud and got stuck.  The manager of the CG showed up and was apologizing to all of us.  HE said they try not to book these sites so early in the season,  but with all the campgrounds int he area tryingto accomidate the people relocating from Gettysbyrg CG, they did there best.  HE had the workers bring in a big old tractor  to get them unstuck and in the process, almost got the tractor stuck.  While all of us were watching the CG employees figure out their next move, JCJR showed up. We did our introductions and all made camp and did our best to stay out of the rain and mud for the rest of the night.

Sorry no pictures tonight, but I will get some oup of the mud pit tommorrow.

We did not get stuck but I guess the people that were in the site before us did cause there is a huge tire rut at the front of the site.. oh here it goes again another heavy rain ban  ???  well guess I will have to wait to get a good pic of our site :(

Oh Pixie I am praying as hard as I can that the rain stops. Maybe in the meantime you can organize a mud wrestling match :rofl2:

Sorry I couldn't resist >:D

Day two:

Woke up to pouring rain and do I mean rain!  After breakfast in the camper, the rain let up and then stopped :D.  we finished setting up

P4230242.jpg and Pam and our clan ventured out for a walk to explore the CG,P4230217.jpg and it is a really nice place.  Large play area with a pirate ship for the kids, nice basketball court, tennis court, shuffle board, miniature golf, arcarde, and a pool.  When we got up to the snack bar, the CG manager Chris was behind the grill cooking breakfast for the guest.  I asked him since they closed the site that was behind dblr and between rdancemom and ours, if he minded if we put up our easy up on the stone area for a place for the kids to play out of the mud and a place for us fiends to eat, drink and chat.  He said make yourselves at home and he even said we could move the fire ring onto the stoned area.

Once we got back the site, my boys and I jumped in the truck to get some cheap fire wood.  We saw a sign on the way in stating $12 per wheel barrow full.  I asked if I could fill my own wheelbarrow and the kid said sure.  Boy was that a mistake on his part!!  I like 3D puzzles and after I had the wheelbarrow stacked about 5 feet high, I figured I had enough for the weekend.

When we got back the boys said they wanted to ride their bikes as I unloaded all the wood.  I turned around to see this:

Boy did hey love the mud!

  • 3 weeks later...

DD21 Starla has uploaded the pics & video from her phone. Thought I'd share more mud with you all...

We begin at the beginning... following the directions to enter the mud pit from the guy leading us to our site. Yeah right... You can see the gravel pad of our intended site in the foreground. It was just past Bill's site. No way were we gonna make it into there...

The wheels on the excursion might have gone round & round but the ones on our TT sure weren't moving...

Call in the tractor...

At one point even the tractor almost got stuck...

They ended up making a space for us along the road. All weekend long we'd run into people who'd say something like "oh yeah, you're the ones in the outback". Initially I thought they meant outback as in the back field we were in where they put the groups... then I remembered our TT is an outback... oops... talk about double the embarassment. Apparently there weren't many who missed the show...

Since obviously nobody else was going to get in or out of there, they let us use the pad in between to gather. It was perfect!

Misery loves company though and soon enough we had it... Mrs Wak might have gotten her hubby's best side in her pics, but Starla was quicker on the draw and took some before the tractor came...

Starla got video too from inside the TT. Click on the pics below to see it.

Check out the audio in this first clip from the tv commercial as Bill is trying to pull out. "Blast thru Spring yardwork... this Jet Pack Vacuum System can turn that field into a fairway"... Too Funny... :rofl2:

Yup that's the collie whining in this second video. She hates it when somebody goes out and she doesn't. Annoying isn't it? Well, maybe not as annoying as washing off all that mud...<_<
