  1. Doug,

I was out in SFO week before last for work that straddled the weekend and I visited the Walt Disney Family Museum for something to do.  This was my second visit in over a 3 year period.  To me, it was worth the visit as it details Walt's life from before he was born until he died.

To get the most out of it, there is a lot of reading and its pretty much laid out in chronological order. This is the primary reason I have to visit museums without my wife and daughter. They refuse to go because I actually read and study the exhibits.

There are some interactive exhibits, especially as you get toward the end.  There is a scale model of Disneyland as well as the engine and a few of the cars that Walt built for the Carolwood Railroad he had in his backyard in California.

You can easily spend 2 to 3 hours there.  It's located in the Presidio, which is very close to the Golden Gate Bridge and the other touristy things that SFO has to offer.

The price is $30 per person (adults) and am not sure if there is a reduced rate for kids.  There used to be DVC discount, but they have discontinued that.

  2. NC has already changed the look for their drivers licenses to begin alignment for this new program.  There was an insert placed in with my license plate renewal notice that detailed the new "Real ID" that they will begin to make available in the near future.  Although it will not be a requirement to get the Real ID, if a person wants that designation, which amounts to nothing more than a gold star placed in the upper right corner of the drivers license, they have to provide some additional documents that prove who they say they are...

I am slightly embarrassed to admit that when we went to Disneyland last summer we engaged in a "fleecing scheme"! They were offering priority seating to the new Frozen Broadway type of show, with a "snow cone party" beforehand. It was $50.00 per person and there were four of us, so I actually plunked down $200.00 for it!!! I still can't believe I did it, but we were there in August and pretty much every line at DL is outside in the heat. The thought of lining up like cattle for an hour while baking in the sun was not appealing!! Plus we would need a FP for the show and we also wanted FP's to the new Soarin ride and Radiator Springs. Since you can only get one FP at a time out there, I know there was no way we would be able to get all 3 FP's before they ran out. So, I sucked it up and spent the money!! Our joke of that trip was our $50.00 snow cones were terrible!!! But, hey we did each get a pin on a lanyard too!!!

There will be no shaming or judging here!  If you feel the need to pay $50 for a snow cone, then go right ahead and let it go (your money that is!)

  4. Andrew, it seems like (naturally) all the folks trying to gain entry to Pandora are going there by way of the front entrance.  Was/is there a way to enter from the path that you guys exited by the Lion King theatre?  Also, since the Florida heat is really getting ready to bear down on Pandora, did Disney install misting fans along the queue lines for these new attractions?

Oh, I'm following along by the way...

And you have to access the video to be able to enter the contest.

I tried getting around it and nope it doesn't work.

Yes, you have to watch the entire video, review the rules and then you can enter the drawing... You can however skip the "DVC commercials" within the video by moving the slider at the bottom of the screen.  I should have been more specific on that tidbit...

  6. If you have 28 minutes to spare, take a look at the new marketing video that DVC has just sent out for Copper Creek Villas and Cabins...  There is a sweepstakes to enter for a chance to win a 5 night stay in a 1 bedroom villa, 1 for DVC members and 1 for non-members.  Should you choose to view, there is a section for current DVC members to access and one for non-members. I'm pretty sure the information is the same regardless of which path you choose.  Warning though, in prime Disney fashion, there are several "DVC commercials" showcasing the benefits of the overall program.  If you don't want to see that, then you can fast forward past it.  All in all, its a well put together video and shows more detail how the spaces will look.  If you like HGTV, or DIY Network, you will feel right at home.  Enjoy!

  7. Like most folks here, we drive everywhere with the exception of MK...  In the past we have not had very good results with the buses because Claudine is susceptible to motion sickness riding the buses.  She is especially more sensitive to it when she has to ride sideways in the seats forward of the rear exit of the bus, plus when you have a driver who really likes to jam on the brakes and jerks everyone, that really magnifies the issue.  Now if she is doing the driving, she seems to be fine, go figure...

We will be dining at their Chicago area stores in another day or two. That is one of the places I ate at for years and miss not having one where we live now. I've also made sure the freezer is empty so I can bring a party pack or two home with us.

While you're there Keith, see about pulling some strings with the folks in Chicago and get us a Portillos here.  A Holly Springs location would be nice in all of that "stuff" they continue to build over there...

After registering at the conference and checking in for the day, I was going to head back to the Magic Kingdom! I was booked for a backstage tour of the park with one of the architects that work at WDW and are responsible for the design and maintenance of the various properties. One thing I learned on this trip is that Imagineering, which everyone knows about, is in charge of the design and construction of new attractions and park areas - once they are done, it gets turned over to the parks and their internal team is responsible for maintenance and repairs. This team is also responsible for renovations (ie Skipper Canteen, in conjunction with Imagineering) and ongoing maintenance, as well as special projects. This morning we were going to get to tour one of those special projects (among other things), so on to a bus we went and headed back to WDW.

I'm an architect, so these tours and the others I took were right up my alley. Plus I got continuing ed credit for them as well ;)

I work for a large corporate real estate firm that services clients all over the place, and this is pretty much the life that I lead... supporting Facilities and Project Managers before, during and after the various stages of a facility's life.  I find myself constantly looking at and wondering how a building is constructed and how it is serviced and maintained.  It drives my wife nuts when I walk around always looking around and up at the ceiling, wondering what the PM's had to do to get a space built out and then how does the FM's maintain it after it is turned over to them.  Most folks don't realize what goes into designing, building, maintaining and keeping a facility up and running.

That tour you went on sounds awesome.  Disney should consider adding something like that to their tour line-up.

I have really enjoyed the TR so far, especially the pictures!  Can't wait for more.

  10. Amen!  It goes to show how well the power of advertising works... How many people sit and watch those tiny house programs thinking what a great idea.  None of the episodes that I have seen addresses parking, hooking up to utilities and more importantly sewer.  The same applies to RV advertising too.  How many of us have driven our MH's or parked our trailers along side the ocean or on the bank of lake like shown in magazines or on TV, with absolutely no one else around but nature....
