  1. Okay that makes sense...  I would say look into an air mattress as they tend to come in all sizes these days.  The sofa in our motorhome came equipped with an air mattress when we bought it and it lasted about a couple of years.  It was one with the air pump installed inside the mattress.  I think the pump finally failed so it wouldn't hold air any longer.  Replaced it with an Aerobed from Bed, Bath and Beyond and has been working like a champ ever since...  The Aerobed brand is kind of pricy, but with one of their 20% coupons, that seemed to lessen the blow.

  2. Doug,

We went to Hawaii back in July of 2014 and stayed at Aulani....  All I have to say, is if you can get there (which is the hardest part), GO!  We thoroughly enjoyed our trip, but just stayed on Oahu only and didn't venture out to any of the other islands.  If you want to see some pictures, you can go to my one and only trip report and see them here.

As for staying and doing some island hoping, I would think the transportation cost would be the biggest issue...  Everything is spread out unless you are going to focus on one particular area for a period of time.  Like when we landed in Honolulu, we had to drive between 30 to 45 minutes east of the airport just to get to Aulani.   It was at least 45 minutes to an hour to get to the North Shore from Aulani.  Can't speak to how it is on any of the other islands, but I'm sure others will be along to weigh in.

     Hello everyone ,

We had been planning on checking in on the 14th to a full hook up a loop (was hoping for 1700). I'm driving with the camper and my wife and son are flying in on the 14th. I'm a lot farther ahead of schedule that I predicted and could be at the Fort within four hours or so. I was thinking about spending the extra two nights at the KOA in Kissimmee but after the drive I'm thinking I don't really want to set everything up twice. Provided I can get a spot would it be weird since I'm all by myself. I'm not normally the kind of person who cares about that but it is a little strange to have a 40-year-old man all by mself at the happiest place on earth, or maybe it isn't? Also, I didn't write this while driving just in case you were concerned. Thanks in advance for your opinions.

I have done exactly what you are doing now several times... This is how all the rock stars travel!  The "roadies" drive ahead, set everything up, and the stars fly in and get picked up at the airport.  This is not weird at all!  Enjoy some "me time"! (but make sure you pick up those dirty clothes and have the crumbs wiped up before the stars arrive!)

  4. And people think this is only a place to talk about Disney related stuff...  Folks pay good money for marriage counseling these days... They just need to come here.  Jen just needs to find a way to collect a co-pay for all those who come here for advice!

You know I had thought about driving to Charlotte to pick up I-77, and that will take me right past you guys... Have a bag packed by the door and be ready.  However, I may take Hwy 1 toward Sanford and Aberdeen and hopefully can pick up I-95 in SC...

My husband will be going that way a few times over the next few days. I'll let you know what he encounters

Thanks Beckers... Getting word through Facebook and the news that I-95 is still blocked from Dunn through Fayetteville, then again down near Lumberton.  I may have to take my alternate route...

  6. Go back and tell your family that at least in this instance, you are not crazy...  They used to have a travel trailer parked there with a plexiglass panel over the door so you could walk up and look inside....  If I'm not mistaken Fleetwood was the manufacturer that displayed there... however something tells me that Coachmen had a stint there as well.  I'm sure some of the other Fiends will come along shortly to weigh in...

  7. We went through an evacuation from the Fort back in the 2005/2006 timeframe, can't remember which...  We got a notice on the door one morning that said as of that evening the Fort would be closing and we could leave and get a refund, or stay and get put up at one of the resorts on property.  We were told if we were staying to fill the water tank on the camper and take it to the parking lot at All Star Sports and take with us into the resort what we needed for a couple of days.

We ended up staying, followed the directions as they said. It looked like a RV show in that parking lot.  They crammed in as many RV's as they could, where they could.  We spent 2 nights there overall. On the 3rd day they opened the parks back up to onsite guests only and we were notified when we could return to the Fort...

We are frantically packing.  Today was our check-out day anyway, so we've been preparing to leave for a couple of days.

The biggest concern for us right now is what route to take.  Considering any and all input.  Help, please!

Gwen, unless you guys have pressing plans to be back home by a certain time, why don't you head NW of the Fort, hit I-75 and see if you can stop in Destin or some other place away from the east coast and just enjoy yourselves... After this storm heads up north or out to sea (like they are "sort of" predicting now), then you and David can take a leisurely trip home.  As others have said, I-95 is going to be a mad house and once you get to that long stretch of nothing in SC, and if traffic backs up, or someone does something stupid, you are pretty much stuck. As you guys pull out, top off the fuel tank and use that motorhome as it was intended...  You have the advantage that the folks in cars don't... you get to ride in your living room!
