I remember on New Years Eve at the Fort two years ago.....after the fireworks on the beach, there were hundreds (it seems) of carts leaving the Settlement area honking their stupid horns.  It went on for 20 minutes or so.  Who cares that parents of little ones are trying to get some sleep and aren't drunk and finding this all funny?

I think this year, I'm teaming up with all the parents and initiating a new Fort Wilderness tradition.....the New Year's Day Looping Horn Armada.  It begins at 6am.

Y'all are freakin me out now with the discussion on sock seams and tags on clothes.  We've dealt with the same exact stuff!!
I guess just when you think your kid has "abnormal" issues (I use the term lovingly)...you find out they are more a "typical" kid than you think!
In reality, aren't we all just one empty wine bottle away from being basket cases ourselves??  :D

We have always gone off season and taken the kids out of school.  Personally, I feel the family time more than compensates for the loss of classroom time.  They always have brought school work with them and more often than not ended up ahead of the other kids when they returned.  In addition, we emphasize the educational part of Disney, especially at Epcot and AK.

Personally, I don't buy into the no soul business. I look into my dogs eyes and there is something looking back for sure.

Heather, I'm going to give you some advice because you're new around here and you seem like a nice person.  And because I see you making two huge mistakes at the same time.

First, you are going to make your first trip to the Fort.  Big mistake...and you'll regret it for the rest of your life.  Soon you'll find yourself planning multiple trips per year, and then you'll end up making a trip there and not even do parks.  You'll get sucked in and wonder how you ever put up with those hotels.  What are you thinking?

Secondly, you joined and posted HERE??  What in the world were you thinking??  This group is the biggest bunch of crazed lunatics you'll ever run into.  (you'll find out that I am the sole voice of reason around here....follow my lead and I'll try to help you navigate these fool-infested waters).  You could disappear now and maybe, just maybe, the whack jobs here will forget about you and your life can continue on like normal.  But if you proceed and post more here....don't say I didn't warn you when someday you find yourself sitting around a campfire with people you never met before laughing so hard you fall out of your chair, only to decide at ten minutes before midnight that it's a good idea to hop a boat to the Magic Kingdom because some nutcase (who may or may not be named Mo) thinks she'd like a Nutella waffle and a ride on the People Mover.

    So run, Heather, run.

Hi, I'm new to this group as of right now. I've been to WDW many many and always stay at Pop Century. My hubby wants to start camping at The Fort and we're really excited. Just wanted to say Hi!

Looks like you've already got lots of great information; the only thing I'd add... is make sure to save a day for relaxing at the Fort.  There is a lot to do there (or you can do nothing :) ).  Have a WONDERFUL trip and...  :welcome:

    Welcome, Laurel!

October is a great time to visit the Fort.

I'll take a stab at your questions:

Golf Cart:  One golf cart plus bikes will work.  Yeah, it would be nice to have enough for everyone to ride, but it would be expensive.  One will get the job done.  Bikes work fine at the Fort.

Premium v. Preferred :  You don't need a premium for a 34' trailer.  It'll fit on a preferred.  Since you're renting two sites, save a little money by going preferred, or even full.

Two sites next to each other:  Doesn't matter- there are plenty of sites on all the loops where they can accommodate this.

Mickey Light:  If  you want one, have at it.

I think that covers your questions.  There's no need to stress.  The Fort is a great place, and you're going to have a blast.  Please feel free to ask away.

pixiesteno got a reaction from BradyBzLyn...Mo in Campsite Etiquette
I remember at a very young age being taught campground etiquette, you do not walk into someone's site without their permission.  It is plain and simple, no different than if you walked into someone's house or hotel room without an invite.  We have not encountered this problem while at FWC but I would be the first to address the issue with said child and then said parent.
As far as kids and dogs go - when we walk our dogs I do not let strangers come up to them and pet them (particularly kids)  my dogs probably would not do anything to them, they love kids but I have two huskies (65 and 72 pounds each) that sometimes lose their mind and bring their paws up and their nails hurt.  I have a husky cross also and she is just happier seeing people she knows.  I will verbally stop a child when I notice them trying to advance on the dogs.  I really hate the comments that follow, "oh, they bite people?"  No, they do not bite but I don't want you near them or distracting them.  I actually scared the pants off one kid who was on a bike at our local park.  We were walking the dogs off of the bike path in the grass in order to avoid bikes and strollers, etc.  and this "charming young lad" saw fit to buzz right by the rear of my older husky-cross and he made her jump and shake.  Yep, brought out my best US Army Drill Instructor voice and got the young lad's attention and proceeded to inform him that it was dangerous to buzz by a dog on the bike.  I don't want to get sued because he runs into my dog that he has frightened and falls from his bike and also injures my dog.  His eyes were as big as saucers; probably never realized that a middle-aged woman could holler like that.  He was about 9 - 11 years old and had obviously never been taught proper riding rules either.

Had a great time with our pop-up over the past few days.  Camped with my wife and two children (2 year old, 9 month old).  Everything was great until the trip home where we had a problem with a trailer tire and set us back a couple hours.  The important thing is that we made it home safely.

Overall, had a great trip and will definitely be going back.  We stayed at the 2000 loop.

I have a Good Sam membership and Good Sam roadside service, like both of them.  Good Sam has some good discounts on a lot of campgrounds.

pixiesteno got a reaction from Total Joker ... TJ in Do Golf Carts Have The Right of Way?
The biggest problem that I see in this debate is, although bicycles have a right to the road there is the whole matter of physics going on here. The smaller vehicle and its occupant can sustain greater injury than a party in a larger vehicle. Additionally, the larger the vehicle the longer distance is required for stopping. It really is not a matter of who is in the right, it is a matter of simple physics & inertia. So I think FWC setting is a perfect place to teach children concepts like right-of-way and how far it takes a vehicle or a bus to stop, things like line-of-sight, judging distance, etc. All of the skills that they will need in the future to be a good driver that is sadly not taught anymore.
Now, if we were in a situation where we were trying to back our rig into a site and kids keep bombarding around the vehicle I will ask once. If they do not respond appropriately and persist in buzzing the rig. I can guarantee that I will be employing my "outdoor voice" that was honed to perfection as a US Army Drill Instructor. Now, if a parent wants to get peeved at me for shouting at little johnny or janie in an attempt to keep them safe; then I guess we will have to have a heart to heart about parenting skills.
