Based on how they have treated AP holders lately, I am predicting that this will be some kind of lame food and drink "event" that passholders will have the exclusive privilege to pay some inflated fee to "enjoy."  Kind of like the new after hours thing at Epcot.

I Googled Harambe Nights and found this link to the Disney Weddings site which shows that they use the Harambe area as a wedding reception venue  https://www.disneyweddings.com/florida/wishes/venues/harambe/.  So, for passholders, they throw up some tables, set up some food stations, and charge what, $60 or $80 for the treat of staying at AK late?  Throw in some "native" musicians and some African beer and wine, and you have yourself an Immersive experience, just as advertised.

Well fairy, the link STILL isn't working.  :raspberry:

I managed to find the page on WDWMagic, not sure if this will work as the page name has some weirdness in it...

http://www.wdwmagic.com/events/harambe-nights/news/30apr2014-'harambe-nights'-premium-special-event-debuting-june-7-at-disney's-animal-kingdom.htm

Just in case it doesn't work...

Disney's Animal Kingdom will be debuting an all new premium nighttime event called 'Harambe Nights.'

Although not yet officially confirmed by Disney, this is what we understand will be on offer.

Each Saturday night, Disney's Animal Kingdom will host a special event including appetizers, beer and wine, along with a new theatrical show in the new Harambe Theater. Afterwards, more food and drink will be on offer at the Harambe Nights Street party.

'Harambe Nights' will run on Saturdays, from June 7 to August 9 2014, 7pm to 10:30pm.

Two categories of seating will be available. With Premium costing $134+ tax for adults, and $94 for ages 3-9. Regular seating will cost $119+tax for adults, and $79 for ages 3-9.

Ticket sales should begin soon, along with the official announcement.

Ah man, that was a good post, too.

The abbreviated version is that I underestimated how greedy Disney management has become.  I guessed they would charge $60-80 for the privilege of hanging around Harambe and eating some snacks and drinking some drinks.

I estimated too low.

This stinks yada, yada, yada.

I'd have guessed $60-80 would have been about right too.  Yowsa.

Question is, is "Premium" seating really $15 better than regular seating?

"Afterwards, more food and drink will be on offer at the Harambe Nights Street party."

Weren't they doing something like this last summer too?  Not a special ticketed event, more an excuse to have people hang around AK later ?

More information on Disney's Animal Kingdom 'Sundowner Celebration'
Jun 01, 2012

We have some more information on the upcoming 'Sundowner Celebration' that we reported on earlier this week. Taking place from June 3 to June 30 2012, you will be able to find special events throughout most areas of the park. The special offerings will begin after the afternoon parade, running through to park close.

Anandapur will offer speciality food and beverages, tea brewing and cooking demonstrations, and finally a cultural dance and street party.

Discovery Island will have two bands - "The Island Groove" steel drum group, and "Viva Gala Street Band". Game activities will be held near to the Flamingos.

Harambe Village will offer specialized works of art, food demonstrations, a Wine Walk and Juice tasting, and a street party with the Tam Tam Drummers and Burudika Band.

For an idea of what to expect, see our report from 2010's "Taste of Africa" events.

Sounds like they're regurgitating part of this again.

Excellent!

Is there anything AP holders get as a nice perk without breaking the bank for nothing

The kicker is I don't think this is an exclusive event for AP holders.

I think they just sent out the mysterious email to generate what those kids who run marketing departments these days call "buzz."

The days of AP holders getting any kind of special perks are long gone.

Where were you when “The Lion King” came out in 1994? I was a tour guide at The Magic of Disney Animation at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, where several sequences featuring young Simba had been animated. It’s hard to believe, but this summer marks the 20th anniversary of that now-classic film. In honor of the epic tale of “The Lion King,” Disney’s Animal Kingdom is prepared to stage a special celebration event like no other.

It all begins with a Welcome Reception in the park’s Harambe Village, including mouth-watering appetizers and African-inspired wine and beer. Then it’s time for the ‘mane’ event! Take your seat inside the newly built Harambe Theatre for an unforgettable performance of “The Lion King – Concert in the Wild.” This all-new, never-before-seen theatrical experience features a live orchestra and choir, dancers, digitally projected movie moments, and dramatic lighting and scenic elements – all hosted by a celebrity guest narrator. The show brings to life the humor, heart, and stirring emotional power of Simba’s journey to find his place as the Lion King.

The lineup of celebrity narrators for “The Lion King – Concert in the Wild” features stars from movies, TV, and Broadway. Those scheduled to appear each night of the event include*:

  • June 7 – Viola Davis: “The Help,” “Ender’s Game”
  • June 14 – TBD
  • June 21 – Montego Glover: “The Following,” “Memphis”
  • June 28 – David Alan Grier: “Porgy & Bess,” “In Living Color”
  • July 5 – Michael Beach: “ER,” “Third Watch,” “Sons of Anarchy”
  • July 12 – Harry Lennix: “The Blacklist,” “The Five Heartbeats”
  • July 19 – Joe Morton: “Scandal,” “American Gangster,” “The Good Wife”
  • July 26 – Alfre Woodard: “Desperate Housewives,” “Miss Evers Boys”
  • August 2 – Patina Miller: “Pippin,” “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1”
  • August 9 – Brian Stokes Mitchell: “Ragtime,” “Trapper John, M.D.,” “Glee”

After the show, the celebration continues with the Harambe Nights Street Party, filled with music, characters, and live performers, encouraging everyone to join in and “Go wild!” You can enjoy an all-inclusive buffet of sophisticated and flavorful African cuisine and gourmet desserts. Exclusive Lion King merchandise and collectibles will be available for purchase during the event, and you’ll want to stick around for a special finale to bid “kwaherini” to a magical evening that could only happen at Disney’s Animal Kingdom!

Harambe Nights takes place every Saturday from June 7 – August 9, 2014, with the Welcome Reception starting at 7 p.m. and a 7:30 p.m. show time. Tickets are $119 for adults, $79 for ages 3-9, plus tax. Tickets with premium floor seating are $134 for adults, $94 for ages 3-9, plus tax. Capacity is limited, so you’ll want to go ahead and get your tickets by visiting Disneyworld.com/HarambeNights or calling 407-939-1319.

From the Disney Park Blog...

The countdown has begun to Harambe Nights Street Party, kicking off June 7 at Disney’s Animal Kingdom – a spectacular nighttime addition in the park’s Harambe Village. With a never-before-seen performance in the new Harambe Theatre of “The Lion King – Concert in the Wild” that includes a live orchestra and choir, dancers, lots of drama and celebrity guest narrators (see Shawn Slater’s earlier post on the Disney Parks Blog), the evening’s culinary experience is like rich icing on the proverbial cake.

Shortly after arrival, you’ll nosh on appetizers like Moroccan beef kefta with tamarind glaze, pickled fennel paneer cheese with tomato, Durban-spiced chicken bites and a safari cheeseburger slider with tomato curry aioli. Pair with African-inspired wine and beer and get the party started. Be adventurous – the chefs have had great fun crafting a menu that introduces new flavor sensations. If you’re a fan of Jiko—The Cooking Place, Boma—Flavors of Africa or Sanaa at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge or Tusker House at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, chances are you’ve tried some of the fantastic global flavors on the menu. We have, and we can’t wait for the butter chicken with warm naan bread (a Sanaa favorite), or the spicy veggie samosa with mango chutney.

After the Welcome Reception, the food never ends – you even get a “Lion Chow” snack for the show – a salty-sweet combo of sea-salted pretzel chips, benne (sesame) crumbles, cardamom candied pecans, golden raisins, dried cherries and candied ginger.

The curtain closes and the street party opens, with live music, characters, live performers and dozens of savory dishes. We caught up with Chef Robert Gilbert for a little insider info:

Chef Robert, tell us about the menu.
When we began working on this menu it was all about harmonizing the Harambe Nights’ experience with the exquisitely refined influences of Africa’s diverse cuisines. We tried for balance, for seasonality, for local ingredients – and most of all an authentic experience.

What was your inspiration?
Disney isn’t just a theme park or resort, it evokes a feeling, and we tried to capture that feeling through an immersive food experience – it was a strong collaboration with Chef David Njoroge at Sanaa, a native of Kenya who embraces true African-style cooking.

How long did it take to develop the menu?
We did four tastings before the menu got the green light. And we had some of our chefs and cast members work with the Sanaa team to truly appreciate and understand what goes into African-style cooking. It took us more than a month to get it right.

What are some of the unique African ingredients in the dishes?
We use paneer, an Indian cheese similar to queso blanco, in the appetizer with pickled fennel. The kachumbari salad – kachumbari is a Swahili name for fresh tomato and onion salad – is a popular food in East Africa. We use masala spice blend. And, of course, the traditional naan bread with chutneys and pickles is a favorite of guests.

Do you have a favorite dish?
That’s easy – the butter chicken with basmati rice – you can’t eat just one piece, it’s that good.
