I have 4 forever mugs how is this going to work for them

Yep, me too. I wonder how they are going to invalidate those? Believe me, Clif at the pool snack bar tried to deny me a refill on my 4 ever mug once. While I didn't get rude with him I did give him an education in Fort history.

Back in the years when the mugs were resort branded we bought mugs to every resort and carried them in the car. That way no matter what resort we ate at we had the proper mug. This was over the 3 years we wintered at the Fort and they changed the resort mugs from time to time. I've spent upwards of $300 in mugs over the years. Probably more. That's a lot of coffee and soda!

I have witnessed people using their own mugs without any recourse. Even those huge 64oz mugs you can get at Circle K.

We complain about locals using the pavilion and pool when not paying. What is the difference of someone abusing the mug system? Both are getting something they haven't paid for..

I won't argue the pool & pavilion abuse because I have witnessed it first hand. We often go to the Fort with our bikes or our golf cart & enjoy it for the day (sans the pool because I hate public pools). But, we are local (on purpose after retiring), are annual pass holders and have been for over 20 years, and even though we have 4 ever mugs we have always purchased the new mugs when they've been introduced. We also camp at the Fort many times in a year. When you buy a mug and use it for a 3 day weekend, there is no way you are drinking $13.95 + tax worth of beverages unless all you do is hang out at the porch all day. Unless you steal a mug, you have paid for your beverages.

For the percentage of guests that use the mugs through out the year there are a blue million that use them only on their trip - as in "one week and gone until the next vacation 2 years from now". I do not think Disney is losing any money on the mugs.

I know the cost of things has changed a lot through the years, BUT ... when I was the night manager at a Subway in Auburn (yes, AL) it costs us about $0.05 for a large soda. That included the cup, ice, syrup - everything. With the volume they run, I doubt it costs Disney much more than that now.

I have 20+ mugs from different Disney resorts and water parks. Back then it didn’t only have the resort name, but it also had the year. So the CM knew if you were using a 2004 mug in 2006 and was much debate over the years on other Board. To me Disney decided to take the debate and the problem with CM having to confront guest (which I never saw) by giving all resorts the same generic mug with no dates on them. I don’t think Disney has a problem with people filling their mugs, but people filling 2 liter bottles and other containers that they bring in for free.

If they went back to an "Annual Mug" (one that had the year on it), and let those mugs refill for the whole year ... . Most of the people that buy them are only at Disney for one trip a year (or less). The locals or Passholders would be the only real extra cost to the system - and it wouldn't be much.

Now to develop a "mug skimmer" to read the RFIDs off of valid cups, and retransmit any ID that hasn't been used in the last 5 minutes when I hold my cup up to the machine. At least I don't have to set up a camera to see their pin, that’s a real pain! LOL

All you would have to do is get the master override code. It exists.

Also, you are paying 13.99 for the mug. That is a whole boatload of cocacola there. I buy the new mugs when they come out. I also use my old ones because they are not broken. My MH is full of mugs.

Plus, at Hollywood Studios, you can BUY the mug with ONE serving of coke for $5.00. Tell me they aren't making a killing on that too. (I had to have the purple one last trip, lol)

I know how much those mugs are, because I have priced them out. I also know how much the syrup costs. For the amount of volume Disney does, I really cannot wrap my brain around the thought of them losing money on refillable mugs right now. All this new thing generates is MORE income and more headaches for its customer base. What if I just went and walked 5 miles and wanted (wait for it.....) TWO ice teas because I was thirsty? OMG, I have to wait five minutes because big brother says I cannot have TWO ice teas in one period of time! Believe you me, since I have been on this diet the past year, I can down a 16.9 oz water bottle's contents in no time flat, and then need some more. (I just did because it is 110 degree heat index outside and I was HOT)

So, are there people who cheat a lot? Yes. A little? Yes. None at all? Yes.

Is Disney REALLY losing that much on the deal? I doubt it, but now, thanks to patented technology, we are bound to deal with it.

BOOOO.

Hmm, where on Ebay can I find a RFID hacker.... :rofl2:

The article said it was an experiment. Does anyone know if, when, or where, it was going to be used?

I believe it was supposed to start the 18th at All Star Sports.

If they get it to work, you know darn well it will be implemented elsewhere.

And for the locals at the pool vs using the beverage mugs over and over again, let me put my two cents in here... >:D

I don't think it is a fair comparison because I witnessed (they were escorted out after a while but...) a carload of no less than 10, yes 10 people get out of a small compact car, foreign jobber, and proceed to unpack all their chairs, towels, 5, yes 5 boxes of chicken from a local place, (these boxes were equivalent to a KFC bucket!) and 3 coolers full, because they were trying to lug it to the pavillion!

(how about that for a run-on sentence! :rofl2: )

Like most locals who visit the Fort WHO CAMP THERE, we are paying to be there and also we are paying for food as well. I have never thought about packing up my car full of chicken, towels, people, coolers and going to Fort Wilderness to hang out. These people are not spending money, they are using facilities that are for paying guests. Now I might be accused of being a hypocrite, however, I will stand my ground on this comparison. "Free" drinks with a meal every once in a while is not killing Disney. I, like Deb, purchase new mugs and stay current. I don't abuse the privilege, but I am not everyone either. I just don't think the comparison of locals at the pool and people reusing mugs is a fair comparison, IMHO.

We have forever mugs from 10 or 11 years ago. I always washed them and packed them away for our next trip so they are in new looking condition. Even so, I doubt we will bring them back on our future trips with all this going on. I don't want people looking at us like we're thieves. It really stinks because we have taken good care of them all these years so we could use them forever - and at any resort - which was what rule at that time. I'm really annoyed at Disney with this whole mug thing. Changing the rules is punishing us long time fans. Even though we can technically hold them to their agreement, we risk being harassed, embarrassed, and potentially run down by an angry mob of haters.

Edited to add: Royal Carribean does not use any kind of "chip" system. We recently spent a week on Freedom of the Seas and all they did is put a little Coke sticker on your key card. You can't get your own fountain drink, you have to have the people behind the counters do it and show your card w/sticker if they ask.

I'll back you up. They were sold from the mid 80's until around 1991. You could not use them at any resort. They were branded to be used at the resort you were staying at. Hence the reason I have mugs from the Fort, PR, CR, PORFQ, PORDL (yes, Dixie Landings), WL, GF, and CBR. When they started changing the pictures on the mugs yearly, I bought them all over again. I believe in 2002 they went to using the same mugs at all resorts. In 2003 they started putting the year on them. Now, there is no year printed on the mugs, but they are changing to new mugs each January.

The only resort I have consistently seen the same CM's working the areas near the refill mug stations is at the Fort. That's probably because the Fort does not have a food court but a restaurant & a coffee machine in a gift shop.

I think the "one drink buyers" are probably the biggest offenders. Buy one drink on Monday, keep the cup in your room refill it a couple times a day all week. We saw a person at PO fill a paper cup take it to their table pour it into a "generic" mug then go refill the paper cup again.

I doubt they really care how much soda we drink, they just want to make sure we are spending $$ to buy their over-priced mugs. I used to buy mugs all the time when they were themed to the resort. I am still using my Dixie Landings mug at work. Once they changed to the same mug at every resort, it made it much easier to reuse them at every trip, to sell them on ebay or loan them to your friends.

As much as the mugs cost, we should at least be able to use them for a year. What's crazy is that so many people are getting the DDP and most of them include the mugs, so everyone in the group gets one. I've never been one to reuse my mug (mostly because I never remember to take it back with me! :rofl2: ) but for WDW to go to this extreme to keep us from getting some extra soda or to force us to buy a new mug is ridiculous. :argh:

I know some Bus driver have different opinions that Disney doesn’t get there product for free. All I can say is I have a friend that works for Pepsi and they beat out Coke for the county fair by paying 80 thousand dollars to be the official beverage of said fair for 3 week.

my question is why go through so much trouble to try and save money on soda.. don't ya think they could find another place to get more money out of the people who already spent thousands to visit them! :argh:

I agree and to me it's more about princliple than cost. Our mugs do have a specific resort on them - Port Orleans Riverside - but at the time we purchased them it was very clearly stated that we would be able to use these mugs forever regardless of which resort we were staying. This was in writing and the main reason I decided to invest in them. We stay at different resorts every time we go.

We had never bought the mugs in earlier years because our kids were young and we didn't let them drink soda anyway. At the time we decided to buy them (2000?) they were under $10. We used them for quite a few years so we have gotten our money's worth. But, once again, it's not about the money. It's breach of contract and I feel Disney should go public with their intent to honor forever mug sales. I have been going to DW since they opened (with my parents then, of course) and have spent countless thousands of dollars there.

I know it sounds petty, but this stupid mug thing has kept me away for the last few years. I will not buy new mugs until they quit disrespecting us old timers.
