Next up is the memorial to the Gettysburg address that is on the right as you enter the cemetary.  The actual place where the address was given on November 19, 1863 is the place where the Soldiers National Memorial stands 300 yards up the cemetary driveway.

I am very glad we visited and spent the day there.  When I was standing next to the Copse of Trees and staring across to the woodline, I was in awe of what the soldiers on both sides must have felt on that fateful day.

When I was standing on Little Round Top and in Devils Den it truly felt like hallowed ground; as did the entire battlefield.  If you have never visited, you definitely should.  What a great trip this wopuld be for those of you that home school your children as well!  I know Nicki did it with her family.

I feel DS especially learned a lot and now has books to learn more.

Next, we head back to the campground to enjoy a potluck with the fiends.

I'm in!  And first to boot!   I didn't realize they grew cotton in PA.  Looks ready to harvest.

Thanks so much for sharing your trip with us! We are heading to Ohio in August to see the inlaws and plan on stopping in Gettysburg for two days on the way home. This is a great way for me to get the boys interested before we leave!

Looking forward to more!

I hope you and you boys enjoy your trip.

Thanks for reading along.

Great updates, Aaron.  It's a very sobering feeling to think about what those soldiers endured.  Thanks for the pictures and narrative.

You're welcome Dave.

It was a great experience.

Aaron great job an the photos and narrative, you could have a new career as a tour gude!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Rennie.

I think I would enjoy being a tour guide.

The tour and visitor centers are a must do. It is overwhelming to think about what the soldiers went through during those three days.

I could not agree more.

OK.

We have had a sobering day at the Gettysburg visitor center, museum, and battlefield.

We returned to camp and got ready for the pot luck.

As you can see, fiend row was alive with pot luck activity by the time we arrived:

I did not get any pics of the food, but it was delicious.

DW's Snarky and Easter Egg cookies were consumed in a matter of only a few minutes.

The older kids put together an Easter Egg hunt for the younger kids; hiding eggs, candy, and other goodies at the row of campsites adjacent to fiend row:

After the easter egg hunt, the kids all played around the sites and playground across the way.

And the adults "played" by the campfire.

Mrs Whip broke out the balloons and started hooking the kids up with some cool creations:

Tomorrow we planned to walk around in town, but it was forecasted to rain........

Whatever will we do?

Our plan for Sunday was to head into the historic downtown area.

We did just that.

It was raining so we put the raincoats on the younglings:

I drove back onto the battlefield auto tour route for a minute to check this place out:

IMG_3777_zpscc352b64.jpg

IMG_3778_zps797eede4.jpg

After spending the morning driving the streets of downtown, we headed back to camp.

Several things occurred in the couple hours after our arrival back at camp:

It was pouring rain, so we spent the early to mid afternoon hours watching NCAA basketball.

We watched Michigan beat the Gators to win their region and punch their ticket to the Final Four.

DS spiked a fever toward the end of the game and was not feeling well at all.

I headed out to the campfire since everyone else was pretty much crashed out in bed, watching the next game which was Duke vs. Louisville.

And that game would be forever known for the horrific injury suffered by Kevin Ware.

I saw the replays and then returned to the campfire where I enjoyed some of Bill and Whip's beer:

IMG_3779_zps2f33e5b2.jpg

IMG_3780_zpsbe966406.jpg

Soon, the kungaloosh arrived:

IMG_3781_zps32006965.jpg

IMG_3782_zpsa1e1233c.jpg

Two fisted with Bill's beer and Kungaloosh:

IMG_3783_zps574bfbf5.jpg

IMG_3784_zps3843cf7a.jpg

And another batch of Kungaloosh arrives:

IMG_3785_zps808f09ec.jpg

IMG_3786_zps33096085.jpg

I believe the beer bottle incident occurred right about this point, but alas I have no pictures.

Picture in your mind Whip throwing a plastic fork at Bill.

Then without hesitation, picture Bill throwing a beer bottle at the back of Whip.

It was unexpected, yet funny.

Now it was time for potluck #2:

After the potluck there was another night of shenanigans but no further pictures................

He could have poked my eye out with that overly sharp fork!  I at least threw an empty beer bottle that was cushioned by a foam cozzy. He  took the first shot and I gave the final salvo.

Besides With out pictures, than I am innocent!!

Aaron's wife is going to have to make more cookies or put names on them to keep fights from breaking out from parents and children *ahem Bill*

What is it with portraying me in such a negative light in this trip report?  First I get accused of assaulting Mr. Whip with a beer bottle when all I was doing was defending myself.  Now you make me look like a ruffian because my kid was hording the cookies and trying to strong arm me to give me one.  When all I did was ask him politely how he planned on getting home from the campground.

I am a good boy...... most of the time.

I'm hungry, again.  ROFL  Most TRs have that effect.

Thanks for taking photos of the log cabin.  It was really pretty.

Thanks.  I love old buildings like that.

I had to share.

Maybe we can raffle them off or make people do stupid human tricks for them?

Most of the time = when not at Gettysburg?

Is it to late for the MPR to be placed in effect?

We don't have MPR.

We have PBR.

Next time....

Can I add that the kids sat pretty much perfectly for the movies? I don't know how we got so lucky but I don't know who panicked more when the first one went off, the kids or the adults scrambling to get another one on before we lost our peace and quiet.

They all got along well and were all extremely well behaved all weekend.

That means they have good parents. ;)

I'm in late, but in.

The English teacher in me loves that your son is a reader.

That looks like a lot of food and a lot of fiends!!!!!

Glad to have you!

He reads all the time.  He can't get enough information.  He is a sponge for sure.

The food and fiends were both awesome.

I found it funny that the kids where yelling at the adults to keep quiet cause we were interrupting the movies.

Who was the parent (it wasn't me BTW) who politely informed the kids that there are plenty of bones scattered around the battle fields and they wouldn't notice a few more? That also might have something to do with how well behaved they were.

The food was incredible ... Really you have no idea on the talent that was displayed at this GG...   The FrIENDS on the other hand made it all worth while.  What an outstanding group of people.   And Bill is not a bad guy...  in fact he may be the most useful/fun Fire/EMS guy I have ever met.   :rofl2: :rofl2:    He makes a deep fried turkey that is completely worth crawling over broken glass for.
