It's a terrific TR - thanks for picking it back up.       And for sure to many of us they're never "just dogs."  :hugs2:

there's a koa behind this casino.  the casino looked neat from the outside but, we didn't dare leave the pups in the camper here.  to far away and nothing around.  this was the koa in boomtown, nevada.  nothing spectacular but a place to sleep..

Thanks to Jen and Chris.  After writing out a tr insert I got kicked off the site.  :banghead:   But have no fear when I got back on there was a saved button--I clicked it and there was at least a part of my tr!   :jumpforjoy

So, thanks to them for having a save action that I didn't know about.  :)

Next-- we came across the salt flats.  Dh said this is where a lot of speed records are broken.  Kinda cool to see.

We stopped at a Walmart in Park City, Utah.  The people here were really nice and all were joking around with each other.  We asked if we could stay and they said no problem.  It was really clean and in the mountains.  In the morning we saw this on the side of the mountain.  I had to zoom in to see what it was.  It is some track for the Olympics.  Do you know if this is a downhill ski track?

Bonneville?

yes, it was.  i had to google map it.  we had gone across 80 and that would be what we passed--bonneville.  Thanks Dave!  :)

Lynn, i think taking pictures helped because i was looking into the camera instead of realizing what we were doing.   :rofl3:   the ones in san fran were the ones i was most worried about but, i did handle it quite well..

Hijack for "tunnel talk". I too love tunnels, most of them any way. I find the ones that go under massive amounts of water like the one in Mobile a bit unsettling. One of the most interesting tunnels is in Alaska - the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel from Girdwood to Whittier. It's one lane wide and you share it with trains. There are traffic signals at each end so you have to wait your turn. Trains, obviously, have the right-of-way.

http://www.soundecoadventure.com/anchwhit2.html

You can "drive" through the tunnel on Google Maps street view. Here is a screen shot of the Girdwood end with cars entering

Love your trip report. Carry on...

End hijack.

that's a really cool tunnel.  someday we'll get up there.  we made it half way on a trip we took-got to banff before turning back to head home.  going to alaska wasn't the plan but, we had gone through yellowstone and glacier on the trip and thought-hey lets go north.  lol

glad you are enjoying the pics aaron and everyone else that's sticking around.  we live in  such a beautiful country and the national parks are so breath taking.  i don't care much for bridges - since the minnesota collapse.  most - i just want to get over them as fast as we can.  but, i love how the architecture on the bridges looks today and the outside of the tunnels can be really neat too.  i don't fly so i guess a bridge is as high off earth as i am gonna get!   :rofl3:

okay--here we are!  my most favorite place to visit.  the flaming gorge in utah.  if you ever go this way you must go here.  it is beautiful and not over crowded.  most people camp here at the rivers (gorges) edge.  but we prefer the sites up above.  the views are AWESOME!  this trip was early in the year and the campgrounds weren't open.  but the wildlife was out and about.

there was a big cave in the side of the mountain.  i think it was a bat cave!  would've been neat to stick around until dusk to see if there bats but--had things to do.

We loved Flaming Gorge. I was there in 2002 and had to bring my wife there on our trip out west. It was one of several of the most beautiful places we had ever seen on the trip.

The National Parks are truly awesome to visit. I have yet to go to one that I didn't find breathtaking in int's own way.

Here's a few more reasons i love the flaming gorge!

It sometimes takes a few pics to get "the right picture".  lol   I can't always make that 5 second delay!   :)

PICT0090_zpsfddfc7c4.jpgPICT0091_zpscf3589b0.jpg

The buck-first pic-was blurred.  I tried to catch him.  What a stance he had when he crossed the road..

PICT0092_zps31301852.jpgPICT0093_zpsdb40f1cd.jpg

PICT0094_zps86a50ee5.jpg

In May we still had snow on the ground in the higher elevations.

PICT0100_zpsa2295e03.jpg

Some critters...

PICT0102_zpse62d593f.jpg

This lake was occupied by dozens of Mallard pairs.  It was really cool.  I tried to get a pic of them-but it didn't work.

PICT0103_zps7e873f28.jpg  PICT0101_zpsd580726d.jpg

This is the camping that is available at this elevation.  We like it up here-less people and lots of wildlife as you can see.  But at this time of year the sites weren't open, yet.. :(  But the animals were out.  These guys were right by the road we drove in on and never moved.  When we drove back out they were still there.  I think we only saw 2 other cars drive down the road with us and they were just heading out to see the view of the gorge.

PICT0113_zps42959c66.jpg  PICT0114_zpsb4706885.jpg

Here is the view we were looking for.  The gorge is huge and really, really beautiful.

PICT0120_zps386c02a4.jpgPICT0121_zps109af7a3.jpg

PICT0123_zps834b5938.jpg  PICT0125_zpsa3487350.jpg

This is what the dogs do when we stop somewhere.  Barkley, Louise and Thelma checking out the stop.  Duke isn't in this photo because he was hurting.  He was either on my lap or on the chair by himself.

PICT0132_zpscfb18677.jpg

Coming back down the road the goats were moving about..

PICT0137_zps0a84aefe.jpg  PICT0139_zpse6c304af.jpg

Like I said the Flaming Gorge in Utah is a really awesome place to visit.  If you want less crowds stick to the higher elevations.  If you want to play in the water go low.  I also believe you will see more wildlife up high.

I really hope I can get to Flaming Gorge someday.  I had originally planned a big trip out west this summer or next, but it just isn't going to happen.  I guess I need to shoot for after some of the kids are gone.  Which is fine....let them take themselves to Flaming Gorge someday.

Beautiful pictures!  Keep 'em coming.

A few more pics from our trip..  I kept missing the woodchucks.  They were everywhere.

PICT0140_zps3d3aec83.jpgPICT0146_zps0a1c3031.jpg

Most of these pics are from down by the dam of the flaming gorge.

PICT0152_zpsb69a0208.jpg

i finally got a good pic of one of the woodchucks.

PICT0158_zps75c7384f.jpg

the visitor center--don't ask me what it all has.  i've never gone inside.  with the views outside why go in??

PICT0165_zpsa0b93ca1.jpg  PICT0166_zpsff8715ec.jpg

this pic i was trying to catch the road on the side of the mountain and how it looked on the side of the mountain.  this is the road we would be on after we crossed the dam.

PICT0170_zps72651488.jpg  PICT0171_zpse9248124.jpg

the views of the dam from the other side-on our way out.

PICT0175_zps2fb84224.jpgPICT0176_zpse72e83eb.jpg

a storm was rolling in so -- we started to roll out.

PICT0178_zps8ca87254.jpg

it caught us.  nothing like a sleet storm up in the mountains.  white knuckle driving for a little while but it didn't last long and we were out of it.

PICT0179_zpsda2eb3f5.jpg  PICT0180_zpsc415eeb9.jpg

some deer...

PICT0183_zps473ac242.jpg

and i decided we needed an elevation pic!

now this part of the trip was probably the one that well---freaked us out the most.  we were cruising down the highway in nowhere land--really it was nowhere land.  it was between the flaming gorge in utah and custer state park in sd.  the last exit was about 8-10 miles back and all it had was a gas station.  all we are seeing on the road are semis.  when we come across the sky looking like this....

PICT0189_zps79327a86.jpgPICT0192_zps92ca8203.jpg

PICT0193_zps02bd10d2.jpg  PICT0195_zps60d43b1b.jpg

PICT0196_zps1635c31a.jpgPICT0197_zpsa3c01d93.jpg

PICT0198_zps1dd31ea7.jpg  PICT0199_zps8b138962.jpg

so, we pulled off the highway as you can see in the pics and debated turning back to sit the storm out at the gas station we passed a ways back.  but, in the mean time i tried the phone internet to look up the weather.  i get nothing.. suck butt!  now what-turn back or go.  the trucks are going into it.  so, we make a call to a fellow fiend who was so extremely nice -- they looked up the weather and said it was a storm just sitting on the highway it was only about a 2 mile swatch.  there was nothing severe.  REALLY!  if you could see it - you wouldn't believe that!

alright-we'll go ahead.  they were right-we were out of it in a very short distance.  but, man, did it freak it us out!

Aaron, that was a rainbow.  We saw a lot of rainbows on this trip.  We never got into any major-have to stop storms.  But, what we saw looked wicked.  A little sleet here and there in the mountains.

The groundhogs were hard to get a pic of.  I would see them race across the road or field and pop into a hole.  They're fast little varmints!  lol
