Sayonara Dumbo! Closing Date Released

by R. A. Pedersen

Dumbo the Flying Elephant will be closed at the Magic Kingdom January 9, 2012 to February 17, 2012. This closure will allow the attraction to be relocated from its current position in Fantasyland’s central hub over to the new Fantasyland section (Circus Land) under construction.

Refurbishment walls should expand further out into Fantasyland at this point, consuming the original Dumbo location. This will create a considerable choke point in the middle of Fantasyland during peak periods so be advised of heavy crowding when crossing East-West through Fantasyland-proper. These walls should remain in place until the Beauty and the Beast and Little Mermaid sections of Fantasyland open to the public.

As the Dumbo attraction reopens it is anticipated the Fantasyland train station will reopen during the same time period. Also, the re-themed Barnstormer, now named The Great Goofini, was previously mentioned by Disney to open during the same time period. Disney has not yet confirmed the reopening dates of the train station or Goofini attraction, so the assumptions are based on their previous statements.

Two pics from Fantasyland this morning. The first is on the bridge leading to the new restaurant (not yet open but you can peak inside) and the second is from the Arielle clamshell ride.

The next batch of attractions is scheduled to open by the end of the year. They are the princess laden "Enchanted Forest", which will include the "Under the Sea, Voyage of the Little Mermaid" ride

And that's the way it should stay!!!

Dumbos Will Duel! More Details on Storybook Circus Coming Early 2012

Posted on October 10, 2011

Disney has released more details on Storybook Circus, part of the Fantasyland Expansion at the Magic Kingdom. The following will all take place sometime between January & May of 2012:

Look! Dumbo is going the wrong way!

Storybook-Circus-Dumbo-and-Goofini-612x600.jpg

Actually, Dumbo is just reversing decades of flying in counter-clockwise circles. Call it “unwinding,” if you will. And in a new location within Magic Kingdom.

Guests will board
Dumbo the Flying Elephant
from the lovable critter’s left side — like mounting a horse … and
unlike
the way guests hop aboard for a whirl at Disney parks on three continents. It is scheduled to begin happening in early 2012 when select experiences in the Storybook Circus neighborhood of New Fantasyland debut just northeast of Mad Tea Party.

Also early 2012, the existing Dumbo attraction near Prince Charming Regal Carrousel will close, be refurbished and be moved to a location in Storybook Circus next to the new Dumbo attraction. The result when completed later in 2012: double Dumbos, one going this-a-way, one going that-a-way … a real circus act, if you will.

There also will be a “big top” that serves as a queue area for the popular attraction. It will feature a variety of interactive experiences currently being developed.

goofinism-800x573.jpg

Two other Storybook Circus elements planned for opening early in the year are
The Barnstormer
and
Fantasyland Station
. Guests who enjoyed The Barnstormer at Goofy’s Wiseacre Farm will be happy to know the junior coaster thrills of that attraction are back with a thematic change: Goofy has sold the farm and is now a circus stunt pilot and magician, The Great Goofini. The completely re-imagined train station will serve as the gateway to Storybook Circus and all Fantasyland points beyond.

So, what’s new? We now have confirmation that the dueling Dumbos will indeed be dueling by going in opposite directions of each-other once work is completed on remodeling and moving the current attraction later in the year. Also, Disney has finally confirmed that The Barnstormer will keep its name, it will just be changing in theme. Finally, the train station will be Fantasyland Station, not Storybook Circus Station as previously reported.

For those wondering, there will be no Dumbo the Flying Elephant attraction at the Magic Kingdom from January 9th through February 17th, 2012. It is expected that the new Dumbo carousel will open on February 18th as work continues on remodeling the moved, older Dumbo attraction.

I would say PARTLY done by November 2012 is likely.

Mostly? Probably not (although anything is possible!) Especially since they changed up the plans mid-stream to add the Snow White mine coaster.

They've said 2013 for completion a few times - but not specifically WHEN in 2013 and that was before the big change.

This was posted on the Disney Parks blog back in January - I'm just not sure at the moment if that was before or after the plans changed...

"The New Fantasyland will be constructed in phases with most new experiences open by 2013. We look forward to sharing more with you as our work progresses."

High resolution close-up pictures of the newly installed Dumbo in Storybook Circus

Nov 17, 2011

We reported earlier in the day that the new Dumbo spinner is now installed in Storybook at the Magic Kingdom's newly expanded Fantasyland. We now have some high resolution photos so you can get a close-up look at one half off the new dueling Dumbos.

The original Dumbo will close in its current location in early 2012 and will move to take up position next to its new twin in the new Storybook Circus land. The new double Dumbo experience will open later in 2012, complete with indoor queue with interactive experiences.

As always click the thumbnails for the large versions, and there is also a piece of concept art to give an idea of what the finished result will look like.

Trees arrive at Fantasy Forest and a close-up look at new additions and the Seven Dwarf's Mine Train

Nov 14, 2011

We have another updated look at the Fantasyland construction site, which once again is showing a lot of progress since our update last week. The most striking addition is perhaps the arrival of a group of large trees. Unlike the trees that were brought in last year to somewhat block the view of the construction, these trees are actually being planted into the landscape of the new land. This would seem to indicate that much of the heavy construction is now complete in certain areas of the expansion. A lot of paint work has been completed on the castle structure over at the Little Mermaid building, with the bridge now really looking close to being completed. At the same time, more and more rock-work is being added. This expansion is certainly going to be a showcase for rock-work, as it is being extensively used, and looks extremely realistic. The paint finishing of the rock with snow, moss and other vegetation looks fantastic.

Head to the photos below for a look at our latest update, and as always, click the thumbnails for the large versions.

Fantasyland's new Seven Dwarfs Mine Train coaster gets concrete foundation and tunnel

Dec 09, 2011

It has only been a few days since our last Fantasyland update, but things are moving so quickly on the construction site that we have another update today showing a lot of progress in the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train area. New since Monday is the addition of a considerable amount of concrete to the foundations and a large concrete tunnel that will form the support of a bridge running next to the Mine Train. A big thank you as always to Scott Keating for providing these great shots, and be sure to click on the thumbnails to view the large versions. You can talk with other fans about the new Fantasyland on our discussion forums in a dedicated board for the project here.

Mo,

someone the other board I visit(Airstream board.... just to clarify) was at WDW a few weeks back. he says he talked to an imagineer who says the construction is "way behind" and only Dumbo will be finished by Nov 2012.

First rule is always under promise and over deliver. We'll hope that is the case here.

I hope so. How bad would it be to host a rally and 1/4 of MK be shut down still. However, if the construction is any indication then I'd think that at least some of it would be open. Although, really as long as Dumbo is I guess that would be ok. Sad but OK.

They won't shut all of Fantasyland down all at once - that would be akin to Disney suicide. ;)

Right now they have plans to shut, move and reopen Dumbo within a fairly short amount of time. Shortly after that the whole "circus" section is supposed to open.

They also have plans to shut Snow White down at some point. Not sure what they'll be replacing that location with though.

They've already redone the facades of several of the buildings and attractions that face the new area so that everything will tie in once it's all open.

I'd expect that they will roll everything out in sections so that they can keep as much open as possible throughout.

I think the snow white area was reported to be the new Disney Princess meet and greet....

That's what I'd thought but someone popped into our rally thread at the other site saying he'd talked to an imagineer who claimed they were really behind schedule. From everything I've seen here it always seems to be moving along at a good clip....
