Is that walk way still at the Fort? Where is and where does it lead? It looks perfect for telling scary stories while walking on it.

Sadly, no.

That is the old Wilderness Swamp Trail.

It was a boardwalk built along the shore of Bay Lake, and one of the amenities available to Fort Wilderness guests.

For a long time, say from about the mid-90's up until just recently the Fort was very badly mismanaged and neglected. It was obvious that a decision was made to not spend any money on the Fort, and things just started to fall down and rot away. The loops became overgrown with non-native nuisance vegetation. The pools and recreational facilities looked old and out of date. The comfort stations looked like something that Mike Brady designed and built in the 70's. The Disney company clearly was diverting its money elsewhere.

The Wilderness Swamp Trail, and the Fort Wilderness Railroad, and River Country, and Discovery Island all fell victim to the mismanagement and neglect.

That photo Discamper posted is probably from around 2004-2005. The boardwalk was so negelected that it started to fall down. For a while, they had it closed off, and had signs saying do not enter. Eventually, they just ripped it out.

Things are better at the Fort now. They have spent a lot of money updating the comfort stations and pools, clearing out the loops and planting new, native, landscaping, and even replacing playgrounds. But, there are a lot less amenities than there used to be.

It's a real shame.
