  1. The deal on the trailer is almost done, got all the replacement parts I need on order for the hitch. Just got my fingers crossed that this one tows much different that my other much heaver and larger trailer did with the vehicle. If it feels even a bit sketchy I'll just beef up everything I can. Stuck with the 3:31 gears though, can't swap that out easily at all. Just means a new Expedition will be due when/if they put the EcoBoost in it. Then I will go EL for the longer wheel base which comes with the 3:73's anyways :) When I went in to buy they had some sale prices posted up on the wa
  2. The Equalizer I currently own is a 10k with 1k bars. Think the next step down is a 600lb bar, not sure that would be enough.
  3. I was still concerned about the trailer length and the comments here reinforced that I should think on that harder and we found a good deal a 2008 Jayco 213 in the same series which clocks in at 23.7 feet. Little lighter and little less hitch weight but overall the same useable space as the 254. A common method it seems to calculate Wheel base is to do wheel base/5 for trailer length. The internet as usual has 2 camps this method, one that calls it total hogwash and a 30' behind a Suziki Samurai is just fine and the other that if your 1 inch over your rig will squirrel of the road into a dr
  4. I spoke with the reps at Hensley and confirmed the Cub will work with this trailer. Since I could use a new hitch anyways I will probably go this route and finally find out if they are truly as good as all the claims. About a year from now the Expedition is slated to get traded in for a Expedition EL should they get their collective heads out of their bums and put the Twin Turbo Eco in it. The 3:73's will be a must have at that point. When I tow I tend to sit between 60-65 max and try not to drag race to much with it =) We are mostly weekend warriors with a range of a couple hundred miles
  5. GVWR is 7300 Rear GAWR is 4250 Front GAWR is 3300 and GCWR is 15,000. Curb Weight - 5549 We do travel pretty light in the TV, couple dogs (poms, so that is like what, 12 lbs?), some bags, 2 adults and 1 kid. High side estimate will be about 600 lbs.
  6. Any inspection advice to, going to check it out tomorrow :) We are terribly excited about the prospect of getting back to RV'ing :jumpforjoy
  7. We are looking at this model: Floorplan Jayco 254 Weights Unloaded vehicle weight (lbs) 4520 Hitch weight (lbs) 535 Gross vehicle weight (lbs.) 5900 Cargo carrying capacity (lbs) 1380 Measurements Exterior travel length 26' 10" Exterior campsite length 30' 8" Exterior height with A/C 117" Interior head room (living area) 78" Tank Capacities Fresh water capacity (gals) includes water heater 30 Gray wastewater capacity (gals) 30 Toilet/black w
  8. The owners manual should have a section in it related to recreational towing behind an RV. Most off the all wheel drive cars I was looking at did not allow for 4 or 2 down towing, but it really does depend on the manufacturer specs.
  9. We used PPL to handle the sale of our old trailer. Very happy with the way the deal was handled.
  10. So far we have 3 models in mind, 1 Class A, 1 Class C and another TT. The Coachman Freelander 28QB. Great price for a new Class C, downside is no slides. Which can be an upside if you have ever had to get a slide back in manually :banghead: The Forrest River FR3 30DS class A. Great floor plan, great price and cab over bunk in a Class A. On the "We want to go on the money saving side" we are looking at the Jayco X213. We would be tight on space but the numbers look real good for towing behind our Expedition. The search has been long and will still be even longer till we finally decide.
  11. I think for a pop up an Exp would tow it fine. Ours is rated 930 on the hitch and about 9100 total (2012). I did tow a 31' TT with it once. Once. Trouble was the P rated tires and short wheelbase, not an EL, combined with a 30'+ TT. Talk about unstable. Was fantastic at 45/50mph, past that on the freeway and it was white knuckles. Least it was only from the storage lot to the house.
  12. The Odyssey lists 3500 capability. As with any loading, care and attention to how much (and where) you put in the trailer/TV should be observed. So some rough numbers. The highest curb weight of a 2013 Odyssey (touring Elite) is 4613 pounds. The GCVWR of a 2009 (only number I could find on line so we will use it for demonstration) is 8210 pounds. So, a Jayco coming in at a dry weight of 2475 leaves you with 1122 pounds of cargo. Cargo being defined anything not covered in the initial weights posted on the TV/Trailer. Some research can be done to determine what is or is not listed in yo
  13. We have some friends that tow a Jayco 1206 with their Odyssey. http://www.jayco.com/products/camping-trailers/jay-series/floorplans-specs It's gross is just a hair under what the Odyssey can tow. it's not the perfect floor plan like above, placement of the sink/stove and all, but they have not had any issues at all towing it once they started using the Equalizer hitch. Did a trip for San Antonio to the Fort last year.
  14. Today is the sad day we have to get everything packed up and cleaned out. 1245 miles back home since we are doing a small detour up to Gamble Rodgers on the way home. It's been great fun!
  15. Not 10PM. Unless backing up a 31 foot trailer in the dark here is your idea of fun. I was prepared to not have a lot of room to move around, but yikes, this place is pretty tight. Luckily the site we have is rated average for getting into and we were able to not have traffic tied up to long.
  16. We are itching to get rolling, leaving on the 6th. Will be a long haul from San Antonio. A swing by your RV has been inserted into the trip plan :jumpforjoy
  17. Bah, here's hoping I can get a modem. Really need something fast enough to support remote desktop access.
  18. Any info if Sprints 4G (non-LTE) access will work at the Fort? It's usually on Clears 4G network. I was at the Lodge 2 years ago and was not able to get signal and my hotspot is 4G only, no 3G =/
  19. Here is a link to the 2003 Ford Towing Guide. https://www.fleet.ford.com/showroom/rv_trailer_towing/2003/2003_default.asp Page 13 is your hitch/receiver ratings. Page 19 is the towing capacities. If I am reading it right the truck should be a 5.4L SEFI V8 Supercab 4x4, it's the only one that comes in with a 7100 rating. Engine seems to be the biggest factor in the tow ratings for the 03 250's.
  20. That seems low for an F250, whats the year on it? We bought a used 2006 Jayco 29BHS that is in great shape (yay! Craig's list), just needed a few things done. The first thing we did was take it in for a full systems check. Had to get some things cleaned out but it was in solid shape. It was also many thousand cheaper than the same model at the dealer, even after we added up the new tires, system check, and other misc. items we knew should be addressed when we bought it. Our had all the trim in place, paint was in good shape, interior was clean and orderly and it didn't stink inside. Bea
  21. This is one of the reasons that the 319DS model is our choice with the Leprechaun. The seating is opposite the kitchen and it's a U shaped dinette which we really wanted. I can see what your saying tho if your needing a bunk house model, cant recall any floor plans that had bunks and the stove not next to the couch. Since we only have the 1 kiddo we can get by with just the overhead bunk. Of course if I keep looking at Airstreams Nutters is going to show my head the business end of a frying pan. Since I was a kid traveling back in the 70's the Airestream has always stuck in my head as ic
  22. I recall back when travelling with my folks that every trip we did included a stop at Wal-Mart to buy the things we forgot or did not have, lol. I swear, every trip I take feels incomplete if we don't stop at Wal-Mart to get something =) Strange tradition now I guess.
  23. There are a lot of guys out there pulling 5er's with 1/2. It can be done but with all the number crunching and research you need to do it's easier and safer just to get a 3/4 or 1 ton and not be lmited in the selection of 5er's you can use. I have a F150 and would love a 1/2 ton towable 5er but after running all the numbers for my model and making sense of it all, it's just to close IMHO. I have a 2012 F150 Ecoboost SCREW, regular tow.
