Not so Live from Manhattan

Recommended Posts

Obviously, I'm no longer in Manhattan, but do have a full Saturday of pics to share that I took with the good camera.  Today was the first time I've had enough time to get them uploaded.

So here we go!

My son and his girl arrived Friday night. We actually crashed pretty early, so got up 9ish, had a quick breakfast and started out.

This is the big thing about New York that bugs me, is all the "service" is right out in plain site along with narrow streets. I'm used to places with big parking lots, and the deliveries and garbage dumpster around back.

Our first destination is the subway to head down toward Battery Park

From what I understand, the NYC subway system has been cleaned up a "lot"

We then wandered into Battery park, and got some Statue of Liberty pictures.

I'll stop here and start with the next post

Now, my original thought was to take the Staten Island Ferry across, then come back, but I was worried about time. I know how the day gets away from you at WDW, and wanted to see a few things, so we passed.

This is the entrance of the Staten Island Tunnel, I was taking a picture of the sign across the way, but got yelled at by the security guy in that little building for taking pictures

We attempted to go by the 9/11 memorials, but you have to order (free) tickets in advance and wait in a very long line, also with all the construction, any long distance pictures are impossible.

Some more One World Trade Center

That's the line into the memorial

Continuing on....

And that is the last of the pictures

By this time it was still only 2 oclock, but we were tired of tromping around, so found a pub with a rooftop area, and just had some munchies, a couple of drinks and just relaxed. The kids were supposed to meet some other friends for dinner, but when they found out they couldn't meet till almost 8, they decided to bail also, cause an 8pm dinner would mean the 10:30 train back to Hartford, so when it came time for me to get a cab to JFK, they bailed for Grand Central.

So about 4pm, I caught a cab to JFK, then hung around the airport till my flight.  Unfortunately, the flight was delayed a bit, the weather was getting nasty, and we were on the tarmac for over an hour. Finally got to Virginia after 11pm, grabbed my rental car, off to the hotel and bed.

Thanks for reading bout my little adventure to the Big Apple!

Glad you had a great trip. Love the pictures, I miss New York, problem is when I lived there I didn't take advantage of a lot of the great things there. I went to the City everyday for work. When I was younger we did take advantage of the night life there and went clubbing 3 nights a week. I was taken on a carrige ride around central park one year for my birthday and would love to do it again. Love the pizza!!!!

We have found the same is true for when we lived in Maryland. We basically took for granted how easy it was to get on the metro and head in to DC when family came to visit. I can't tell you how many field trips I went on there.

Now when we go back there is always so much we want to see and do, but so little time.

This also applies to the many historic places in the area such as Gettysburg, Mount Vernon, Fort McHenry, etc.

Just looked at all the bonus photos- they're great!

Thanks for sharing them. I'm glad that you got to see so much of the city without going on one of those tourist tours.

It's been a few years since I've been to NYC.  I hadn't seen the new World Trade building in that complete of a state.  It looks good.  I don't think I'll ever get used to the changed skyline though.  I used to see it all the time as a kid.
