RUMOR: The Magic of Disney Animation Set To Close at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

With Inside Out hosting the biggest opening weekend ever for a completely original film, one might wonder why you can’t meet Joy or Sadness at the Magic of Disney Animation at Disney’s Hollywood Studios right now. Well, the reasoning seems to be that the location, or at least most of it, will be closing soon for major changes.

If what we are hearing is true, the Magic of Disney Animation will close in a few weeks time, leaving the park without the “Mushu film”, Animation Academy, and the character meet and greets that currently are hosted in the space. The Incredibles meet and greet already moved out a few weeks back, being replaced in the budget by Doc McStuffins who now meets outside of Disney Junior: Live on Stage.

Should the space return, rumor has it that the Animation Academy will return in a new or expanded space (possibly multiple theaters) to better accommodate the hoards of guests who love the “learn-to-draw” attraction. It is unclear what would happen to the remaining space in the attraction beyond this. If the plan comes to fruition, the long-unused outdoor queue at the Magic of Disney Animation should become a stand-by queue for Animation Academy, while FastPass+ guests are routed past eh queue and inside through doors near the former Incredibles meet and greet.

Details are still sketchy, and the only really solid information we have is that the space is closing for some reason very soon. Obviously, this is all connected to the ongoing, unannounced expansion of Disney’s Hollywood Studios which may or may not finally be announced at the 2015 D23 Expo and this is a park-capacity change that would help them handle crowds better during periods of heavy construction.

Stay tuned for more details as they become available.

Dang.

We always liked heading in through the gift shop and visiting the meet and greets and animation class.  Even on the busiest of days, this was a good place to visit, as it was air conditioned, and out of the elements.  It was a great thing to do to kill time between FP reservations.

DHS really can't spare another attraction at the moment.  They need to add some things before they shut this one down.

They can toss Anna and Elsa on stage where they had Star Wars, and the place would be packed.

They don't need rides or attractions, they have Frozen!  Wonder how long they can beat that dead horse....

From WDW News Today...

Last week, we told you about rumors that the Magic of Disney Animation at Hollywood Studios will be closing. This week, some more solid information has been released to cast members at the attraction.

According to the cast, July 12th will be the final day to meet Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and Hiro & Baymax (Big Hero 6) meet and greet experiences inside of the attraction. These meet and greet closing are confirmed, however, we are still 100% certain on the exact date. We assume that the rest of the attractions inside including the “Mushu” show, interactive exhibits, and the Animation Academy will close the same day, but that has yet to be confirmed.

Mickey and Minnie will be moving to a new, yet-to-be-announced meet and greet location at Hollywood Studios, while Hiro and Baymax are leaving the par entirely with no new home in sight.

No other details are available at this time.

I agree that they must have punched the numbers and figured that anything frozen will carry the attendance until something new opens or changes. If they continue to make stupid changes to attractions like they did on the great movie ride, people will get upset and God knows if the princesses of Frozen can save that

I'm not sure if it has been confirmed elsewhere, but a CM in the Animation Building told us on July 5, that EVERYTHING in there, including the drawing classes, will close on July 12.  That prompted us to go and see the Mushu film, which we haven't seen in quite a while. It's a crying shame that this is all going to be shut down, and presumably removed.  This was a great place to hang out in bad weather, or to kill time in between FP's.

This rumored closing finally forced us into the drawing class. I wish we had done that earlier- that was fun.

I'm glad that you got to do it once at least.

I have a huge collection of drawings that we did at those classes.  They only had about six CM's who lead the classes, and we have gotten to know them over the years.

I would hope that the animation classes will pop up in a new location somewhere on property, but they may be gone for good.

So sad.

Is Disney's Hollywood Studios about to get its version of a Blue Sky Cellar preview center in the now closed 'The Magic of Disney Animation' building?

The Magic of Disney Animation at Disney's Hollywood Studios closed its doors yesterday, marking the end of an era for behind-the-scenes working studio attractions at the park.

It is widely known that the park is about to undergo a major transformation - bringing new attractions, new lands, and even a new name to the park that now finds itself lacking a cohesive theme and identity.

The upcoming D23 event just over a month away would seem the most likely opportunity for us to hear details of exactly what Disney has planned for the park, which brings us to the future role of The Magic of Disney Animation building.

A number of sources have indicated to us that current plans are to convert the former animation building into a preview center for the park's makeover project. Much like the Blue Sky Cellar that originally operated at the Disneyland Resort to promote its makeover of the California Adventure park, expect to see models, plans and more as the planning and construction progresses.

If the Studio preview center follows the Blue Sky Cellar model, also expect to see frequent updates, including exhibits on past attractions and other items of historical interest. Although not announced, One Man's Dream is expected to also close as part of the park's updates. If this is indeed the case, many of those exhibits could be relocated to the Magic of Animation exhibit.

Disney has not yet confirmed any plans for The Magic of Disney Animation, or made any comments on the park's future changes. All information should be treated as speculation until officially announced.
