CCIntrigue...aka Gwen 547
So cool that your dad took so many before the digital age. Before digital I shot 10 rolls of film with my SLR on every Disney trip. That's 360 pics for you young'ns. I thought I was taking a lot of pictures. Now with digital I take 1,000 or more, depending on how long we stay. I keep telling David see how much money I'm saving by going digital!
AC in A2......Aaron 693
Good girls don't say anything right now. would it be wrong of me to point out you just said something :rofl3: That's funny. Awesome TR! BTW, I agree on the CR pic....It's a unique angle for sure. Coincedently, I was going through some old slides the other night and found some from the early 80's of the Fort, EPCOT, and MK. I am going to order a slide scanner to transfer them to digital. Thanks. I am going to do something with my dad's old 35 mm pics too. Looks like we will get a couple more TRs like this! Looking forward to seeing your pics! :rofl2: Yup. It's still funny. Wow, that's great! The early 80's would be neat to see. You are right about the angle. I cropped Aaron's photo with the train, and it creates a similar view: If Aaron's photo included a bit more to the left, we would see the track split and curve one way to the Contemporary and the other way to the service area. TCD Keep em coming! I'm really enjoying the old pictures! So cool that your dad took so many before the digital age. I am glad he took so many too. I am fairly certain that I have about 500-550 pics for this TR. There are probably 10-20 times that in photo flip files at my parents house. Just need to scan them into digitals and there will be a lot more where these came from! Mystery solved TCD and Dave live to solve these type of mysteries......ok.....maybe they don't live for it.......but they're good at it.

AC in A2......Aaron 693
Okay. We are going to head back to the Contemporary for a bit. Then we will head over to the Magic Kingdom! Here we are back at the Contemporary Resort: Back on the monorail: We have arrived! More Magic Kingdom next!
Tri-Circle-D 2,059
Aaron-are these photos all from one trip? If so, your dad certainly got around. From the Polynesian to the Contemporary, from day to night. This photo was taken from the roof of the Contemporary. What was your dad doing on the roof? : That is Discovery Island out there in Bay Lake. You can see that at that time it had a big sand beach there on the right side of this island, and I see a little dot that is the shipwreck that is still there today. Only today, there are trees growing all the way out to the shipwreck. TCD

Tri-Circle-D 2,059
It's interesting to see those good sized trees there in the area of the flagpole: They took an axe to those things a while ago. TCD

TCDThey are from a couple trips in 78 and 79 for the pics thus far, but i am showing them in the order he had them in the slide reels. No idea about being on the roof. I'll try to remember to ask him.Maybe there was an observation deck? View of Fort in distance, sans abomination. Nice. Isn't it?

So did your family stay at the Polynesian and Contemporary resorts as well as the Fort? Yes, I'm sure there was an observation deck. There still is. I go up there from time to time. But, it's not something a normal person on vacation would do. TCD

I'm guessing they used a chain saw. Wonder if there was a sight line issue with fireworks, one of the old castle shows? They probably did block some of the Main Street USA view. There are trees there now, but much smaller.

But, it's not something a normal person on vacation would do. TCD I believe our first trip in 1978 was a split-stay at the Poly and Fort and all subsequent trips were Fort only. I know a couple of times we stayed at off-site campgrounds for a week or so before heading to the Fort for the second half of the trip. I remember my dad talking about the substantial price increases at the on-property hotels........which I am pretty sure at the time was only the Poly and CR. I am trying to figure out how these slide reels were put together to begin with. It looks like he just mashed the first couple trips together because I am going in the order they are in the reel. If you notice in the two Poly playground pics, my brother and I are wearing different clothes in the two pics; yet they were side by side in the slide reel. I'm guessing they used a chain saw. They probably did block some of the Main Street USA view. There are trees there now, but much smaller. I think they hooked a long chain to the trees and ran it to the back of the explosively powerful monorails, pulled the trees out, and then re-planted them in Al Gore's yard, where one day, while resting underneath, he would one day think of a new idea called the information superhighway. I have to say the new view is better. They got that one right.
AC in A2......Aaron 693
More updates, please? I am getting ready to take DS to practice in about five minutes, but I will toss in a quick one, because you asked politely!
AC in A2......Aaron 693
Here we go because Annie asked for an update. Sometimes the good girls should get what they want, right? Right. So here we are back in the Magic Kingdom: I think the older Gent is giving my dad the stink eye: I leave you with a couple pics of the "cute" blond kid and his older brother: I will likely not get to the next update until morning.......... alexwyattmommy 181
Thank you for the update. I think that guy is giving your Dad the stink eye because your Dad is taking photos of his sassy lady friend. Those were some very nice gams she is showing. I like the pansy flowers and cute little boys in the Borden wagon.

AC in A2......Aaron 693
Do you remember these guys? It's the Keystone Cops! I am convinced my dad organized the 1978 and 1979 trips together in these slides, because here are two carousel pics that were slotted consecutively in the slide reel but they are clearly not from the same trip: In the next update, we will have two (at least) wonderful blasts from the past! Tri-Circle-D 2,059
More great photos! Your dad is awesome. Clearly, he sat down one day to organize his slides and made little piles of the Contemporary Resort, Polynesian, Carousel, etc. Makes sense to me. And it creates some cool contrast between the photos. This one caught my eye: You posted a closer shot of the sign out front right after that. What we now know as Tony's Restaurant and Town Square Theater was once the Gulf Hospitality House. I found an article about it here: http://www.omniluxe.net/wyw/hsphouse.htm What is interesting about that article is that it refers to unconfirmed rumors that they served free coffee in there. The author of the article says he can't find any confirmation that there was ever free coffee. Well, I'm here to tell you that my family first visited the MK on a cold winter day in 1972 or 1973. We were brought there by my grandfather, who promptly disappeared. We were there on our winter school break, and it was freezing. Grandpa later told us that he had found a lounge where they served free coffee, and he hung out there all day enjoying it. If you knew my grandpa, you would know that story is true, because there's no way he would have paid for the coffee. TCD
AC in A2......Aaron 693
What an awesome article TCD! Did you see mint julep on the menu? Isn't that the same alcoholic drink they sell at the Kentucky Derby? If so, I thought they never sold alcohol in the MK prior to BOG. Hmmmm.....
