  1. I think it's one of the nicer TT parks that we've been to, but we have only been to 1/2-dozen or so. Other than the D-loop, it's not wooded at all. There are some spacious sites and some snug sites- one area is dedicated to 50 amp sites and the rest are sporadically spread thru out the park. Here is our most recent site: And here is back in the D-loop (it's the only pic I have on my phone). I have a write up of our Christmas 2012 trip with more pictures on my blog (www.learntorv.com). 2. Same here - way too cheap but also no way of transporting it with a bunkhouse fifth wheel. I did see a pretty ridiculous (read: über jealous) rooftop rack on a truck a bunch of years back. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  3. The valet option is only $20 and they had no problem with my dually. :) We also parked earlier (like 5pm) near the T-Rex place without problems- had all sorts of spots to choose from and got one that backed over a grassy median before a bus lane. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. I'm trying hard to remember the brand that we bought. It was a 12'x12' straight legged design. We bought separate screen walls for it. Just last week, it collected water and destroyed the thing. My father-in-law also managed to break a few teeth off of the zipper for the entry to the screened in area and it would allow the zipper to pop off. I'm pretty certain it was this one: http://www.quikshade.com/products/244-w144-forest-green.html I knew it collected water, in previous trips- I would drop the fabric so that it hung down when we were away. This trip, I tried adding tarp clips - 2 pe
  5. 13-14 hours was definitely our max. I was pooped by the end of it. For Christmas 2012, we drove Baltimore to Orlando. Left about 11pm and met up with my in-laws in SC to caravan the rest of the way around 8am for a long breakfast. We did some switching around, my wife drove and I went to the in-laws car to rest for a while. We went to a Marriott in north-east Orlando somewhere by about 6:30pm. We stayed there a night because we were staying at the Thousand Trails park in Clermont and it's first come/first served and I didn't want to be wandering around a dark park trying to pick a site while
  6. This doesn't help you, but we opted for hard plastic totes with drawers in them. We just set them on a countertop (that housed our furnace and converter). They just made a re-appearance in our fifth wheel for a long trip and having my in-laws along for a couple of weeks. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  7. We're actually checked out and are enjoying the pool before heading to Clermont. Fortunately the DC beltway and driving slow doesn't bother me. I worked around the beltway for 8 or 9 years. You just settle into a groove and wait. 135 miles in 3 1/2 hours. Longer than I hoped, shorter than I prepared myself mentally for! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  8. We made 2 stops before getting to the fort: 1) Kosmos Village in Glen Allen, VA. Very small (14-site park) in front of a mobile home park. Fairly level sites (possibly enough that we could have went without 1 1/2 layers of Lynx blocks but we're "particular"). Their sites are all long pull thrus. I called earlier in the day to reserve as we were punishing ourselves with starting our drive around DC on a Friday afternoon. They put a cone on our spot to hold it. Site #5 was a little narrow and a bit muddy in the grass. The real problem was the electric hookup very far forward in the spot- in fac
  9. Seems like it. At first glance, I thought we would be big for the site and truthfully, given where our wheels are and that we have to stay hitched up for the truck not to poke out into the road, I'll know more to ask/request for my reservation. This was literally a last minute decision because the kids were doing great in the truck for the drive down from Maryland. We got to Orlando a day early before our reservations at Thousand Trails Orlando. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  10. Here you go, it's something that I out together: http://www.towingplanner.com/TripPlanner/FuelCost On a computer/big screen, it shows the national average from FuelEconomy.gov. You can click/touch on it to fill the cost/gallon field. On small screens, you have to click the button to show hints to see that. Hope it helps. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. Sounds like things have been covered pretty well so far- Kapitol KOA in Millersville is likely the best option. Second to that are either going to be Bar Harbor or Whispering Pines but both of those will be 45 minute drives. We live in Columbia, MD. 9 years ago, my daughter was treated for a cancerous brain tumor when she was 1. I don't know how old your son is, but if it is pediatric, they have housing for folks from out of town. Almost on-site and across the city at a Ronald McDonald house. We lived too close when my daughter was in to qualify, but they still helped us get setup with an apa
  12. I know I'm resurrecting an older thread- but it sounds like the OP's trip isn't until December. We are in site 217 right now with our 42' fifth wheel with slides on both sides. We also have a crew cab/long bed truck. Backing wasn't awful as it was on a curve and the angle of the site points the opening towards the curve. A little tricky due to the site post markers and recycling container out front, but we got in. Our camper's wheels are at the very back of the blacktop/cement pad and we didn't unhitch the truck (only staying for 1-night). We have 3 slides on the driver's side and a 4th on t
  13. I have no horror stories, but my understanding is that AAA won't help you with your camper if your TV needs to be towed. And won't help with the camper in general (flat tire, axles, bearings, etc.). I dropped AAA and opted for Good Sam. Haven't used AAA in a long time (and was woeful about using discounts from it) and haven't needed Good Sam yet. I have used the campground discount a few times now- not much, but every little bit is nice.
  14. All of our numbers are hand-calculated using an app. I've only missed 3 or 4 fill-ups and just reset the app calculations during that time. It's been pretty consistent full mileage. I'm hopeful now that we're nearing 25,000 miles that it'll start to creep up and get better (supposedly!). I highly doubt it, but a man can dream...
  15. Do you have an actual link to where these should be ordered from?
  16. I agree there... I guess I'm just more girlie, girlie than I thought and a truck seems so... rough. Plus, we have little ones so the space of a trunk area (SUV) is really needed... that and a 3rd row. When we bought our truck, we were expecting our son (hoping for a velociraptor, but ended up with the boy). I was also commuting regularly and the truck was to be my wife's daily driver. We got a hard rolltop cover to turn the bed into a trunk. We also tied in the tailgate lock to the automatic power locks so that it automatically locks and unlocks. And finally installed an EZ Assist lowering
  17. 13 and 14 ram diesels mpg have gone up a lot due to now they use def. It's the gearing - they're 4.10 gears and it's a 4x4. It all adds up and ends up with crappy mileage. But hey- it's a towing machine!
  18. Well that beats my f350 I average 16 in town and 18 to 20 on the highway depending on speed. You guys both have me beat black and blue. 13-14 highway and 12 around town. 8-11 towing my 14,500 pound fifth wheel.
  19. Not really- but the amount of weight that the camper pushes down on the truck is higher for fifth wheels than travel trailers. This weight comes off of what is called your payload or cargo carrying capacity. A fifth wheel typically has 20-25% (with fringe cases as low as 15-16%, but it's not common) and a travel trailer has 10%-15%. The towing capacity is how much your truck can *pull*. It is calculated with a completely empty truck and only a 150 pound driver. I'm willing to argue that they don't even calculate extra weight for hitches. It's purely a marketing number because of chubby dri
  20. Thanks for the heads up! I think that's a bit TOO much truck for us. But you offing it up is just one of the reasons why I love fiends so much! Don't discount a 350 in single rear wheel if you come across one. You'll have a similar ride to a 3/4-ton truck but higher towing capacities.
  21. I had never had it before but it sounded pretty neat. I found and used this recipe: http://whatscookingamerica.net/Beverage/Limoncello.htm I let each step sit for 40 days. I'll likely switch it up next time with a bit more syrup and let it not sit as long for the first step but longer for the second step. The bottles are 185ml wine bottles, tasting corks (real cork) and shrinkwrap wrappers from the local home brew place. I'll switch to synthetic corks because I broke one (out of 3 bottles we've gone through so far). And the labels are my wife's doing- just regular printing on paper and made
  22. LOL, the first articles I wrote for my sister. Her and her ex-husband were long time seasonal campers. He took care of everything and when she wanted to keep camping after they split and she got a really old camper for free- I started writing things to help her and her boyfriend. I'll often times take things from forums that seem like common questions and try to write a page about them. For instance, on Monday a "hybrid vs. not hybrid" post goes up from another forum. :)
  23. Thanks! If there is anything that I can write about that you would find useful, please let me know!
