Let's head to the ole fashioned swimmin hole, shall we?   We start out with a classic Disney relic of the past:       I should stop right here and pick it up later.   Those pics deserve their own up

He's moving even slower than brown paint guy ...

And here we go:                       Do you remember this character experience?     Moving on in Future World:                         Was that a Commodore 64?   How about robot

We were in the lounge at the land one time and ran into our next door neighbor. Surprised both of us, we talked often at home but neither of us knew the other was a pass holder or even interested in Disney at all.   They had a soda fountain and snack stuff in the lounge and it overlooked a part of the living with the land ride.

I am really loving this thread.

We went to Epcot for the first time in 1983 and IMO, it has continually gone downhill since.

I feel the Future World has gone downhill, but World Showcase has turned into (for us anyway) a wonderful adult stroll in the afternoons/evenings.  The live entertainment, the food choices and the general atmosphere are really enjoyable for us.

If it wasn't for WS I'd rarely go.  FW for us entails a quick ride on DJD, hopefully grabbing a FP for Soarin or TT, then back to Canada for a Moosehead.  From there we eat and drink our way around the World until our FP time is up.

Next we will visit a new Disney theme park that opened in the Spring of 1989.

Here we are in the Spring of 1989, soon after the park opened for business:

You got to see pics from the original Back-lot Tour in this update.

It was much better back then.

In the next update we will visit the MK and another new park!

First,

I answered these once but apparently my post did not go through.

I then posted an update, so make sure you go back and read the latest update.

That is the Figment I remember.  I loved that ride and was so sad when I took a quick trip to Epcot in the early 90's and it wasn't the same anymore.

ETA:  It was Magic Journeys I was mad about the changes.  Memories are a tricky thing.  I got the building right, but the wrong attraction.

That is the Figment I like best also.

Pluto's tongue is still long.  When exactly did they cut that thing off?

TCD will be by to answer that.

Unlike most people, I still like the Universe of Energy.  The sad thing is that I can't remember what it was like pre-Ellen.  Disney really lucked out with choosing Ellen.  I thought it was a dumb move at the time, since Ellen was hardly a big star at the time.  But, she is more popular now then she was then.  We don't ride this attraction very often, but it's fun to do if you have some time to kill waiting for a Fastpass return time.

I forgot that Universe of Energy was originally sponsored by Exxon.  I am guessing that some of the show must have focused on oil production and such. I wish I could remember.

I meant to mention something else about that World of Motion/Test Track lounge. I think all of the attractions have private lounges.  I know there is one in Misson Space for HP employees.  And there is one in The Land.  For about a year or so, they used that as a Passholder Lounge, which I thought was cool.  There was an elevator that you would go in and press a certain two buttons at the same time, and it would take you up to the lounge.  There wasn't much to it, but it was cool to see.

TCD

That is good info about the lounges.  I need to test the Test Track lounge.

It wasn't until some time in the '90's.  Maybe even later.

He used to lick all of the TCD girls with that nasty thing.

TCD

Told you Dave.

That is a very small world.

and Thanks!

I saw the original Journey Into Imagination in 97, and 98, and maybe even 99, don't remember when it changed over to version 1.5 (which was AWFUL), version 2.0 is just a little better

1.0 was much better than 1.5 or 2.0.  I agree!

These are the most awesome pictures!  I am enjoying this trip back in time!

Thanks SB!

We loved Minnie's Menehune!  And the original Journey into Imagination was great.  Now it's so lame.

Agree on all counts.

We went to Epcot for the first time in 1983 and IMO, it has continually gone downhill since.

I like the additions of Soarin and Mission Space, but they have much work to do.....

Wonders of Life: Closed and needs to be replaced

Universe of Energy:  needs to be replaced

Journey into Imagination: needs to be replaced

That would be a good start.

I feel the Future World has gone downhill, but World Showcase has turned into (for us anyway) a wonderful adult stroll in the afternoons/evenings.  The live entertainment, the food choices and the general atmosphere are really enjoyable for us.

I agree and we love WS.

I wouldn't mind them adding a new country.......maybe where the outpost is?

If we didn't have little kids, we would be the same way.

In the early days, didn't the backlot tour encompass a lot more, as in New York Street, Residential Street, going past the "then" working studios, etc., etc.  I remember on my first trip, walking on a catwalk/hallway above the working studios, looking through windows seeing stuff in production. New York Street had been taken off the tour by then.

Also, the animation tour was something to behold, real animators, working on real animated features (In my first trips it was Mulan, and Lilo and Stitch)

I like the new park.  Indy has been around for a long time.

Indy is a timeless classic.

I miss seeing the Golden Girls' house on the backlot tour!

That part of the tour was pretty cool.

Sorcerer Hat SMB.

Yes sir. It does.

I remember some of that as well.

A few years back Jason and I saw them working on Princess and the Frog. They were really excited about returning to classic animation and were talking all about it.

It's an interesting story how they came to animate Princess and Frog traditionally....it was apparently Lasseter and some of the Pixar folks that made that decision.  Ironic as Pixar's success was somewhat responsible for Disney ditching traditional animation in the first place.

And Aaron...you should see the movie.  I like it.  And that's saying something...I typically complain about most Disney movies.

The animation studio at MGM Studios is where I learned how to make animation cells.

Do tell more.

That is a bit ironic.

I guess i will have to check it out at some point.

I believe it was totally responsible.

It's actually a simple process.

If someone has a little drawing talent and the desire to do it, they can create exactly animation cells that duplicate those that sell for hundreds of dollars.
