3am wow you must be a night owl? I wonder if they will ever be open those hours again.

Yep.  I can count the number of rope drops I've seen on one hand, and often we don't get to the parks until noon.  But we also pick our park of the day based on what's open the latest.  I think I've only ever ridden Peter Pan after midnight (I refuse to wait an hour and don't generally waste a FP on it.)  lol

I'd love for those late hours to return - after midnight almost everything was a walk on and the parks were so cool at night when they weren't crowded - but short of paid events like this, I doubt that will happen.

This...and we’ve gone in the past and the crowds were as bad (if not worse) than standard operating hours.  Very frustrating.

It's been a few years now since we've done MNSSHP - which we love - but that was our experience the last few years that we did it too. The first couple of times we went the crowds were really nice - lots of walk ons, plenty of good parade viewing - but they felt busier and busier each year.

  3. (Context: I've lived my entire life in New England, the last 30 years in southern NH)

Temp ranges can swing about a bit as already noted, and in my experience, when it's "cold" in FL, it's a damp cold, which affects me a lot more than our icy, dry cold up this way. That said, I've tent camped at the Fort in January and gone from needing the electric heater and an extra fleece blanket inside my sleeping bag on the first night, to sleeping with just a sheet and the fan blowing 3 nights later. So... anything goes!

Layers are your friend, and if you're not from cold places (like here in NH) pack warm hats, mittens and socks, just in case.

Personally I love FL in January, but then NH in January....  ;)

Crowd-wide WDW in January is nice, with the exception of MLK weekend which tends to be busy-ish.

WATCH LIVE: ‘A Celebration of Festival of the Lion King’ Opens May 15

    Laurel Slater

by Laurel Slater, Manager of Communications, Walt Disney World Public Affairs

There’s something special about entertainment. The combination of dance, music, costumes and the unmistakable talent of the Disney Live Entertainment team is pure magic. That’s why I’m thrilled to share that “A Celebration of Festival of the Lion King” is opening at Disney’s Animal Kingdom on May 15! I was able to sit in on a dress rehearsal recently and was so impressed. I found myself tapping my foot, clapping along and grinning from ear to ear (from behind my mask, of course!).

It was also wonderful to see how excited and joy-filled the performers were to do what they love most by sharing their talents and artistry. They are just itching to share their passion with a live audience and are thrilled to be bringing the show to Disney’s Animal Kingdom guests.

One thing to keep in mind is, there have been a few changes to the show since you last saw it. While the majesty and splendor is all there, staging and choreography have been updated with safety protocols in mind for our performers and our guests. We’ve also pared down parts of the show, such as the acrobatics, but the rest of the cast will be sure to dazzle you.

Because we are still physical distancing as part of our health and safety measures, the opportunity to view “A Celebration of Festival of the Lion King” during a visit to the park will be very limited. To give more people a chance to enjoy it, a one-time live stream will be available on May 15 at 12:25 p.m. ET right here on the Disney Parks Blog as well as on @DisneyParks on TikTok, the Disney Parks YouTube Channel, and the Disney Parks Blog Facebook Page. We invite you to tune in to our first official show and join in the fun!

Looking to the future, we hope to have even more good news about entertainment to share in the coming months. As always, stay tuned to the Disney Parks Blog. Hakuna Matata!

When we were stationed in San Diego we went to the park regularly, but didn't spend much on food or "trinkets".

Makes sense.  The more we go, the longer we're there, the less we spend on stuff.

These days aside from meals, we mostly buy popcorn and dole whips in the parks. lol

And if I want a new t-shirt or sweatshirt (because I've finally blown a hole through one of the eleventy I already have), we head to the Character Warehouse outlets.

  6. Not a surprise at all. DL has much bigger percentage of local regular guests than WDW, and I know if I could just "pop by" the parks any ol' time, I probably would spend a fraction of what we do when we're there for 2-3 weeks once a year.  The time we spent 6 weeks there (with APs) our biggest daily expense was our campsite. We did eat out in the parks/DS, but not nearly as much as we normally would, and we bought hardly any "stuff."

FWIW (which might not be much) I have seen some of the typically-somewhat-correct-at-guessing bloggers saying that they expect that now that WDW has increased capacity limits, they do expect some version of the AP to return to WDW before long. What it looks like (if it happens) remains to be seen.  I'm sure whatever is it or isn't, you can count on it being more expensive. I also won't be surprised if we end up with blackout dates of some sort for all - not just resident passes. If people "from away" spend more money, might as well capitalize on that during the most expensive times of the year...

    Emily Amato

by Emily Amato, Public Relations Manager

Walt Disney World Resort has even more reasons to get excited about visiting in May and beyond! You’ll be able to see beloved characters when Chef Mickey’s at Disney’s Contemporary Resort reintroduces an all-you-care-to-enjoy dinner starring the Fab Five. Over at the EPCOT Resort area, you’ll be able to once again enjoy seaside meals when Cape May Café at Disney’s Beach Club Resort reopens, and, get your taste buds ready for the re-opening of Tusker House Restaurant at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park.

    Chef Mickey’s Dinner

Starting May 16, Chef Mickey’s will offer an all-you-care-to-enjoy family-style dinner that will include “no touch” appearances like snapping a selfie or waving hello as Mickey Mouse and some of his favorite pals make surprising appearances in each of the dining rooms. Similar to other character dining locations, Guests will take home a souvenir with character signatures and colorful artwork.

Seeing your favorite characters isn’t all you can look forward to at Chef Mickey’s! The dinner menu will include items for the whole family, like starters of “Chef Mickey’s Caesar,” citrus-poached shrimp salad, and assorted breads; main courses of gnocchi, roasted garlic potato Gratin, plant-based faro wheat fried rice, prime rib, roasted turkey, and salmon; and an assortment of sweets to top off the meal. Little ones in your family can enjoy mac and cheese, chicken nuggets, turkey corn dog nuggets, and more!

    Cape May Café

    • Food options from Cape May Cafè

If you ever dream of escaping to the beach and enjoying all the delicious food of an oceanside town, you’ll be happy that Cape May Café at Disney’s Beach Club Resort reopens on May 18! The New England-style restaurant is a perfect location to refuel before and after a day of adventure at Walt Disney World.

Guests returning to Cape May Café will find old favorites and new changes, along with its signature service and quality. The restaurant will serve breakfast and dinner, but Minnie’s Beach Bash Character Breakfast and the Seafood-and-More Dinner Buffet will not return at reopening.

That’s not to say there aren’t plenty of treats in store! The all-you-care-to enjoy family-style breakfast menu will feature popular staples like pastries (including the layered crispy, cream-filled “Lobster Tail”), omelets, and Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse waffles. Highlights from dinner will include house-made Parker House rolls and corn bread, a seafood boil with a variety of fresh seafood, The Turf Platter with steak and chicken, and – my personal favorite – lobster mac and cheese.

Bookings for Cape May Café and dinnertime at Chef Mickey’s open on May 7.

    Tusker House Restaurant

The guest-favorite character dining location at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park, Tusker House Restaurant, will reopen this summer! During the modified character experience, guests will enjoy delicious family-style entrees inspired by the flavors of Africa and can snap photos of Donald Duck and friends, dressed in their safari best as they promenade through the restaurant. We will share more about the menu and reservation information soon.

We look forward to welcoming you back to Cape May Café and for dinnertime at Chef Mickey’s later this month. And we can’t wait for you to savor the delicious African-inspired fare at Tusker House Restaurant in the coming months. This is what is happening.  They are also moving people who are currently back at work all over the place.

Not surprising. That's a LOT of people to sort out and get in place all at once, and I'm guessing that's a bigger priority that what it will take to retrain a bunch of them in new positions.

  9. 3 hours ago, Grumpy and Grandma said:

Better than no job.....Their original position may not need to be filled at the moment.   Gretchen mentioned "asst to Tigger", well Tigger isn't out meeting guests so that position doesn't need to be filled.

Fair point. And they may be calling people back in a particular order as jobs open up (seniority, availability, etc.) - i.e., not necessarily who had the job last but who is at the front of the line to call.

A friend who 'helped' Tigger got a call back for a job of loading rides.  Not what she is trained to do.

Yeah that is also the thing I'm seeing in some of the people being called back - they're being called back for jobs other than what they were doing before.

One person claimed that Disney called them 4 times.

Sounds like you got into some chiggers.  I get them when walking through the grass. And only get bitten in the areas not covered by clothing.

Yep!  And those little buggers are the itchiest.

Cortizone  cream takes the itch out of fire ant bites for me.

It helps me a wee bit, but not much.  I eventually found out out that if I pop an antihistamine it works better.

Being a De resident we won't take credit for the Key bridge, it's in Baltimore and they can keep it :ROFLMAO-1:have you towed across the Bay bridge on 301 yet or the Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel on 13 going to Va, your hubby would probably divorce you after those

Oops, sorry - didn't mean to blame you for the Key Bridge LOL.  I

Crazy enough, we actually did tow our very first big camper over/through the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/tunnel. What's even more bananas is that we had no idea what we were doing at the time and didn't even have the tow setup completely corredt - I don't think we even had sway bars!!  (Talk about not knowing what you don't know.) We survived, but it may definitely have led to DH's bridge-phobia.  ;)

Then definitely avoid Mackinac too....It's been known to sway a little with the wind..and 5 miles long..

I'd have to bring a suitcase full of Xanax.  :ROFLMAO-1:

I know that when I get to the New River Gorge in WVA, I really focus on the road!

I'm glad you survived your ordeal!

DH is not a fan of the Key Bridge in DE. If he's awake when I'm driving I go the inland loop instead.

It was a doozy, one I hope to never repeat, and we were incredibly lucky.  Thanks to seatbelts and the dogs being crated, we avoided the fate of all of our stuff which was strewn across about 50 yards of highway.

  14. Wow is for sure.
    That. Is. Bananas.

I can only imagine what it took to get the people and dogs out safely.

I've been in a a wreck where we flipped on the highway towing a 33' camper with a Lincoln Navigator (so about 50' end to end).  Every window in the truck was busted except for the rear left. We basically rolled to one side and I think would have kept rolling if the camper hadn't yanked us back the other way and then dragged us to the side of the road with it (it had damage on one side only).  Both humans and 3 dogs walked away with no real injuries, but I know how terrifying that was. I can't even imagine what it was like to be in this situation.

Try to imagine a giant Cracker Barrel inside a Bass Pro shops with an upscale surf shop and Texas BBQ.  After sampling some of their signature sandwiches I think the BBQ Brisket sandwich will have you coming back on your return trip home. The only downside is they do not have any tables or seating so it is all take out.  Did I mention that the rest rooms are huge, clean and they sell art work in them.

That sounds like completely insane shopping amusement park... annnnnnnd I'm writing it on my list for our next trip.
