Tri-Circle-D 2,059
Great post DIT- I have no doubt this new resort will be really nice. Look at what they did over at Wilderness Lodge with Geyser Point and the new pool. My beef is that they have apparently chosen to take away the entire Settlement and give it to the new resort. That's a bigger loss to the Fort than anything that any old timer can name. Sure, this fancy resort will be great. But what they are apparently going to do to the Fort is unforgivable. YENSIDCAMPER 66
I wish the simple life of River Country and swimming in a lake were still options but they have been gone for decades. I think Dave is right, the changes will probably end up first class for both resorts. Walt himself said his parks would never be finished so change is a constant. TCD you actually gave me some hope with your observation about the beach change. I don't think that will be the only change in that area. Even the artist rendering shows some buildings that don't exist currently and they could bring some nice surprises or upgrades. I also don't think the Fort will go away because it was part of the original idea. I actually hope they build an exclusive hoity toity loop. It can only help ensure the survival of other parts of the Fort. I am looking forward to bringing my grandchildren one day, but they won't experience it like we first did because I will be too old to sleep on the ground or set up a pop up. 😉

Let's face it...the Fort of our youth has been gone for over a decade, if not two. The peacocks, train, trams, River Country, etc are never coming back. But what will exist once this construction is all over in a few years might not be terrible. While it's becoming clear that the Settlement and Clementine Beach will be significantly altered, I have yet to walk around a single resort at WDW where I thought to myself "good Lord this is awful!". I believe they will create a beautiful place. Different, no doubt, but probably pretty darn nice. I too grieve the loss of what was a peaceful Settlement, where I enjoyed sitting on the porch with a drink while the kids played. But I have other peaceful places in my world. And I'm hoping we will see a nice combined area with enhanced amenities for the benefit of both resorts. This talk of "our beach will become their beach" rings hollow with me, because I don't see Disney running a fence through the Settlement with razor wire to keep us out. I imagine additional areas to walk around, like at many of the other resorts. Yes, there will be more people. That's a given. But hopefully it will be nice to visit additional shops, grab a beverage at new bars with outdoor dining areas, and still have our peaceful campsite to relax at (and possibly some additional amenities to come in the Meadows area). Well said Dave I agree and hope it all works out. But did you find a cinnamon roll from main street bakery or something? How did you get so Disney positive?

BayLake Campers 83
And here is the construction access road. Right next to the STOL dirt stock pile. Just to throw this out there. The STOL dirt stock pile will be 15 acres in size and 18' high, with plans for future dirt storage to the north of that. That is a lot of dirt. 454,000 cubic yards. That is the size of RC 18' high, that's a lot of wetland to be filled in.
YENSIDCAMPER 66
That is a lot of dirt. this is supposed to open in 2020 they will be very busy to get all that construction accomplished. My colleague is at WDW now and is a DVC member. I asked him to see what he could find out and so far the DVC people he asked about it said they don't tell them much about the resort and he could find out more on the internet. It doesn't sound like they have begun a hard sales pitch for it yet. I have asked him to gather anything he can. Unfortunately he doesn't have anytime to nose around the Fort. He probably wouldn't even know what to look for. As far as I know he has never been there.
djsamuel 322
Talked to a friend involved with this. The picture shown here sounds fairly accurate. There will be no house boats, they were cancelled. No plans for Discovery Island, nor will there probably ever be. There was a waterfront restaurant planned but that was removed. The A frames shown in the beach are lodging like the cabins at Fort Wilderness. BradyBzLyn...Mo
ImDownWithDisney 342
Like was said before the amount of flagging and spray paint on the ground and pavement all around the store, marina, and pioneer hall is troubling. I saw it for myself earlier today. I'm thinking cart traffic in that area may be a thing of the past when this new stuff is built.
YENSIDCAMPER 66
Based on TCDs thoughts I think the area behind the store and 100 loop out to the lake on the right side of the dock will be developed for Fort use. anxious to hear what else you observe this visit. geoffdaddy 33
I have been saying this for a while, but since we haven't had a serious downturn in the economy since 2001 (housing crisis aside), I wonder if Disney World is setting themselves up for a big fall with all these DVC expansions when the next recession hits. The first thing that goes in those cases is discretionary spending and timeshares are darn near the first thing to get defaulted when it does. It seems like Disney will expose themselves to a lot of risk when it happens. How's that for a doom and gloom prediction?

I can imagine a third party real estate company snapping some of these, which would really throw a wrench into the works, particularly with regard to "city" governance. Disney might lose out on their monopoly position.
