Disney's Imagineering continues to say that the show has struggled with technical difficulties and new technologies being used. From the PR dept, it sounds really complex if not impossible to explain

Here is the shirt I will be wearing the next time I get to the MK.

I can't see an after-dark show at AK without Disney having to work hard to change guests' habits.  For 15 years many of us have gotten into the habit of hitting AK early in the day and then bailing by

Beautiful New Concept Art Released For ‘Rivers Of Light” Nighttime Show Coming To Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Some brand new concept art has been revealed in this quarter’s “Mickey Monitor,” and it’s for the incredible Rivers of Light nighttime spectacular coming to Disney’s Animal Kingdom this Spring.

Not everyone may receive the Mickey Monitor as it is only sent out to Disney Annual Passholders, but here is that Rivers of Light concept art for all to enjoy.

The sheer detail and extravagance that will be coming and presented in Rivers of Light is looking more and more like it will be hard to believe.

In this new concept art, you can see a number of floating sculptures floating around the center structure which stretches high up into the night sky. There are mist screens much like in Fantasmic! and water fountains, floating lanterns, and so much more.

During Rivers of Light, the Tree of Life will undergo an “amazing awakening as the animal spirits of the tree are brought to ‘light’ by magical fireflies, revealing moments of wonder and enchantment.”

Hopefully, there will be a more exact start date soon for Rivers of Light, but for now, we have to just be ready for when it makes its debut in Spring.

Still no completion date announced, but we must be getting close...

Quote

Work around the Flame Tree Barbecue restaurant (located on Discovery Island at Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park) is scheduled to begin after park close on Sunday, February 21. During that time, the pathway leading from Discovery Island to DinoLand U.S.A. will be temporarily reduced, causing minor changes in the flow of Guests. As a reminder, the Guest restrooms in the area (which can be found near the new open-air stage) will remain open during this work.

As part of this plan, the following work will occur:
  • A planter in front of the Discovery Island restrooms near Flame Tree Barbecue is being removed, and a walkway will take its place. This will prove to be very useful when Guests will be exiting the park after each showing of the new Rivers of Light nighttime show;
  • A construction wall will go on the site of the existing restroom walkway;
  • Isle of Java will be closed during the work due to sightline issues related to the construction wall.
The completion date for this project has not been announced yet. We will continue to keep you updated.

Rumor: Rivers of Light Dining Packages Possibly Coming to Animal Kingdom’s Tusker House

Are Dining Packages for the Rivers of Light nighttime spectacular coming to Animal Kingdom’s Tusker House Restaurant?

It sure looks like it, if you have an Android device at least. Allow me to explain…

Currently, menus for Advance Dining Reservations for Rivers of Light Dining Packages are appearing on the My Disney Experience app on Android devices, though the meals are not bookable at this time.

(We assume these would operate the same as Dining Packages for Fantasmic! at Disney’s Hollywood Studios: guests make a specific package reservation for a restaurant that offers Dining Packages, where the set price for your package meal also reserves those in your dining party seats at a select showing of the event).

Before the iFolks out there begin to worry, I want to stress again that these reservations are currently non-bookable. And, in fact, no official debut date has been announced for the new nighttime spectacular coming to Animal Kingdom. So these Dining Packages are, at this point, still speculation as well. But here are a few screenshots as they are displaying on android devices, so you can check it out…

You’ll notice that choices — at this time — come up as Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner for the first, second, or third viewing of the evening (which supports rumors that up to three showings of the spectacular per evening are possible).

A few menu views are available as well under the package heading, like these options to learn more about dinner at Tusker House.

Likewise, breakfast options come up under a heading specific to a Rivers of Light Breakfast package.

Rumors for the debut of the Rivers of Light Spectacular swirl anywhere from soft openings in late March to an official debut in mid-to-late April (though it remains true that no dates have been set forth from Disney officially).

But if the Rivers of Light Dining Packages do indeed come to Tusker House, I can think of few better ways to kick off an evening enjoying the spectacular…

Unconfirmed word on the street is that they'll be holding press previews for the new show April 18-20.

And there's also this (again unconfirmed)...

Quote

All rumors and signs still point to Rivers of Light having a start date of sometime during the week of April 18, 2016. It has long been rumored that Disney was going to try and begin this new nighttime show around Earth Day which is April 22.

And also this...

Tusker House Rivers of Light Dining Package reservations are showing up for the week of April 18th on Android devices.  You can’t book the Rivers of Light Dining package yet but it is displaying on Android devices.

The Disney App is showing three different showings or sections for Rivers of Light.  We can’t tell from the Disney App if there are three different show times a night or three different viewing sections,

First Look: ‘Rivers of Light’ To Debut April 22 at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

aa89e1fd793e4eed52553813f14c340f?s=32&d=

by Jennifer Fickley-Baker, Editorial Content Manager, Walt Disney World Resort

Today we’re happy to share that Disney’s Animal Kingdom’s first-ever night-time show, “Rivers of Light,” will officially debut at the park on April 22.

The show, set on Discovery River in the Asia section of the park, will depict an ancient lantern festival guided by two storytellers who call forth four animal Spirit Guides: an Asian Tiger, Tropical Turtle, African Elephant and Great Horned Owl. These Spirit Guides return at different points during the show to lead the audience through their journey through the Rivers of Light.

Check out the video below to get the first look at some of the illuminated lanterns, water screens, moving fountains, light projections and other amazing elements that will be featured in “Rivers of Light.”

We’ll have much more to share with you as work continues toward the show’s April 22 debut. Be sure to keep your eye on the Disney Parks Blog for more.

Walt Disney World Resort More Walt Disney World Resort Stories

All in the Details: Creating ‘Rivers of Light’ Costumes

Jennifer Fickley-Baker

by Jennifer Fickley-Baker, Editorial Content Manager, Walt Disney World Resort

If you tuned into our live chat with “Rivers of Light” creatives Michael Jung and Mark Renfrow earlier this month, then you got an exclusive first look at two storyteller characters – Aseema and Aditya – who will appear in the park’s amazing new nighttime show. I have to say, these storytellers and the amazing costumes they wore were even more exquisite in person than the video could show!

‘Rivers of Light’ Costumes ‘Rivers of Light’ Costumes ‘Rivers of Light’ Costumes

The costumes were designed by Irina Kruzhilina, a New York-based costume designer working alongside Walt Disney Imagineering Creative Entertainment. The four human characters costumes in the show include: a pair of mystical storytellers and their acolytes (students). Each duo makes a ceremonial entrance at the top of the show in each of their respective village amphitheaters. They then make their way down to the water, where they set out on elaborate lantern vessels.

The four costumes combined feature 81 different embroidery motifs, 180 different fabrics and more than 250 various bead designs. Because the two storyteller characters, Assema and Aditya, transcend time and location, inspiration for the costumes was drawn from Native American, European and Far Eastern cultures. If you look close enough, you’ll notice that some beading appears as if it was handcrafted from stone and metal centuries ago – but the same costumes also feature modern glass work, blending time and culture together. The costumes for Ambu and Ketu, the acolytes, reflect the clothing of their teachers, but is more conducive to that of an apprentice with pants and sashes.
