  1. I'm not sure how many we have of the Fort. We took pictures all around the state. I remember one shot I took from the skycar I think above 20,000 Leagues, and you could count the amount of people walking around easily. It wasn't crowded at all. Yup there were guards and they did make you stop. And you could drive into the parking lot where it's now just an exit. The shack got damaged during a bad storm/hurricane and was abandoned after that.
  2. Well our first visit to the Fort and the MK was in 77. Then in the fall of 78 we went to the MK after we moved down here and my first daughter was born. I remember the sign at that time, and some other visits. But I stopped going thru the main entrance years ago after I discovered the back way in, especially after the guard shack was abandoned on Vista Blvd. We used to keep the old paper passes in our glove box to flash at the guard to get into the Fort parking lot, then take the tram to the Settlement Store and get food and eat on the beach while the kids played and waded. I wish I coul
  3. The sign used to be to the right of the parking lot booths where you stop to pay. I think the far right used to be for campers (it's now the bus lane), but I could be mistaken, the camper lane might've been next to the bus lane. The sign used to say something like campsites available tonight, or they would flip it over so it said no campsites, like the old vacancy/no vacancy signs on the motels everyone used to stay in before the big chains took over everything. And until Disney starts to lose money, they are not going to change a thing. Some bean counter showed they were more profitab
  4. For the past few years when we go to WDW or the Fort, I always come in the back ways and not thru the main entrance. Do they still have the sign at the parking lot entrance that used to say Campsites available tonight, or did they take that down? I know it's a silly question since it's next to impossible to book a site anymore, but was wondering if they still accept last minute "drop ins"?
  5. Went back and read all your Fort articles. I fondly remember the train and other things that have vanished over the years. The old pick up truck that used to visit the loops in the morning selling supplies you would need for breakfast.. Used to have a chugging sound recording and when he stopped he would ring one of those triangle bells. I'm sure it vanished because it was waking up people. The peacocks Trams Marshmallow Marsh excursion More trees between sites Full delis at the Meadow and Settlement stores. You could get a fresh sandwich made while you waited, a drink, then w
  6. Orlando has a good science museum, lots to do for kids and adults. You could take a side trip to Daytona and visit the beach or if you're into NASCAR take a tour of the track. Hotel hop, visit Animal Kingdom Lodge, hop on the monorail and visit the 3 hotels it passes by. Take a monorail ride over to Epcot and back.
  7. Good article. My wife and I rode the train on our first visit to the Fort and the MK back in the fall of 77. It was a great feature of the park and I miss it every time we come back.
  8. San Antonio was where we purchased our Platinum Passes. We were in Houston for my granddaughters birthday and drove to SeaWorld to get the passes. We got two years for all these parks Unlimited admission at these SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment locations: SeaWorld Orlando, SeaWorld San Diego, SeaWorld San Antonio, Aquatica Orlando, Aquatica San Antonio, Aquatica San Diego, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Sesame Place (PA), Adventure Island (FL), & Water Country USA (VA). Special rates at Discovery Cove in Orlando, FL. for less than just Orlando Seaworld, Busch Gar
  9. It's funny, SeaWorld Parks including the water parks are pretty strict on what you can bring in. Only snack sized items, water, baby items. I have metal water bottle I bring in (full of water) but they never question what's in it, but if they see a soda can it has to get tossed. We usually bring in their refillable cups with the lids on to get soda refills. I could shove a sandwich or two in them, and they would never know.

  12. We have a California brand bag that has handles or can be used as a back pack. The top part wasn't insulated and was roomy to carry towels, dry goods etc. The bottom was soft sided insulated and roomy enough for snacks, sandwich makings etc. But it had decided to come apart. My wife was looking into sewing it back together. We have a smaller insulated backpack, with a larger upper compartment and a smaller lower one. It has two small side pockets good for utensils, a larger front pocket where we carry a small fisrt aid kit and a sleeve on the zipper top flap good for small flat things.
  13. HDDR food was decent but not memorable (my smoked ribs and chicken are better). THe show was good and the free drinks were a nice plus, but overall I think it was overpriced. But it's always booked, so they are not going to lower the price. " Build it and they will come" attitude. They have said for years that Disney will raise admission prices every year until attendance drops off then either hold it or drop the price. That still hasn't happened. We did the Banana Beach buffet at Aquatica a couple of months ago. It was $18 for all day, drinks included (no alcohol) or show, food was de
  14. I was shocked at the price when I reserved for 10 adults and 2 kids at the HDDR and had to pay when I made the reservation. I thought it was like a room reservation and you could pay just a little or pay when you arrived.
  15. Critics are like weatherpersons. Take them with a grain of salt, and they are usually wrong at least 50% of the time. I would much rather hear a review from a real world person. Most (not all) kids/family movies get at best a so so review down to "it's the worst piece of junk going". I was really shocked when the Tampa critic gave Heaven is for Real a great review, and had it in the 5 movies to see list for about a month. Thanks for the heads up TCD. But nothing beats The Princess Bride!
  16. and he said it's just a matter of getting it into the budget One Fiends lot fees for a month should cover the cost of a sidewalk!
  17. Yeah... the helmet thing is pretty new (last couple of years). Somebody must have sued somewhere... The new and improved Fort Safety Wildeness At check-in, you will be given a giant roll of bubble wrap and haz-mat suits for each member of your party. You put the suits on so you don't get bug bites or poison ivy. You wrap each other in bubble wrap to be protected from bumps and bruises. Pools will be filled in and changed to wading pools Golf carts will be replaced by the pedal surrey cars that they have at Boardwalk. All playgrounds will be removed Tetherball ball will be repla
  18. But these bats would have magical rabies. You would be injected with Pixie Dust and be able to join Tink flying past the castle every night!
  19. Before I posted I did a search for his name, and castle guy and didn't find anything. Sorry...
  20. Maybe I missed it on these pages, but Dave posted on the I Love Disney Camping FB page that he cancelled his Christmas trip this year. No castle light show. :-(
  21. We just did that the week leading up to July 4. We haven't been to the parks in quite a few years, and even when we did stay at the Fort and go to the parks, we usually rushed back to the Fort. We did 1/2 days at most at the parks. But then again we only live an hour away.
  22. Like others said previously, you have to use Disney's modem and you can use your own wireless router. Don't see any reasont to want to use your own unless you have a VPN tunnel programmed into it, or he's trying to get everything stowed away neatly. Why risk damaging your own equipment on the chance of a power surge thru the network connection. We have a small PUP, and I tossed the modem and router under one of our couches, but left the cushion pulled out a little for air circulation. They can generate a bit of heat in an enclosed space. Someone with a larger camper wouldn't have that
  23. I never thought of that, but I should've known. My inlaws were at another table, and my niece doesn't eat meat. They brought her salmon and I think pasta. It was so big she couldn't finish it and she said it was fantastic.
  24. To me, the ribs were too saucy/sweet. When I smoke them, I use a rub and no sauce. I let the people decide if they want to put any on while eating
