It's official the new Avatar land is coming!

Recommended Posts

I don't think the area will be too hard to understand.

Avatar is about people from earth showing up on a fancy planet and destroying its ecosystem and indigenous giant blue people.  Not a very complicated concept.  I expect the new land will be a bunch of fluorescent plants with a few giant blue people and alien dragons thrown in the mix.  That's pretty much all you need to know.

Basically if you've ever seen Dances with Wolves or Fern Gully you get the idea of the movie.  Guy initially doesn't understand the locals, then he becomes one and fights his own people because he realizes his people are the bad guys.  Throw in aliens and bright colors and you have it.

Thanks, guys!  I won't try to find the movie.

Actually there was a vote and it passed by one vote. Where were you when we needed you? It's all your fault.

Don't forget these....

I can't see where this was shared before and I stumbled across it today so I figured I'd share for those of you asking "what's this land of the blue people about?"

Actually, that photo is over a year old now, and was the subject of this thread: http://www.fortfiends.net/forum/topic/11873-nooooooooooooo/

It's funny (but not hard to believe based on recent WDW construction projects) that a year has already passed, and they just recently started to go vertical on the project.

I figured it must have been around here somewhere, but I was being lazy and my lame attempt at searching didn't turn anything up.  8)

This means the land in AK will actually be open before the first sequel. Elements from the sequel are to be included in the land. Therefore, all of you Avatar fans can see sequel spoilers by going to AK before the movie releases.

Hurray.

That's ok. Right before you board the ride they will have a sign hanging up the says "Spoiler Alert" :D

From Disney Parks Blog "Bringing the World of AVATAR to Life at Disney’s Animal Kingdom"

Kelly has been working hard to convince me that my mouse hatred is misguided and I need to return my family to WDW sooner rather than later.  And it took you all of one simple post to destroy her efforts.

Do we already have a spoiler?

Was there a tree that looked like that in the movie?

TCD

Kind of looks like the floating island things they have in the movie.

There is a gigantic tree in the movie but they shot it until it fell and killed a bunch of big smurfs.

LOL.  Great description.

I thought this might be Giant Smurf Tree #2.

BTW- they were playing Avatar on one of the cable channels this past weekend, and they were interviewing someone involved with the original film during the breaks.  He revealed that the main earth bad guy is going to be back for the 2nd movie, even though he "appeared" to die in the first movie.

Whatever.

Was the big beautiful tree felled by the evil humans and their planet destroying mining techniques?

I never saw the movie, so that is just a guess.

Are there any Avatar fan groups? Does anyone even care about this movie anymore? Does Avatar have a nationwide group of people who create authentic looking costumes to attend events? I'm so confused.

Actually, I wanted to answer some of those questions myself. Guess what? There are fan sites, even active forums.

Ok, but this one hasn't been updated since 2012, so they don't care that much apparently. http://www.avatarplanet.net/

And this site isn't there anymore. http://www.avatarnation.net/

So a lot of serious fans have abandoned Avatar long before Avatarland will open.

Thanks for researching that for us.  I'd be afraid to look at those sites.

Your questions are good ones.  And reaffirm that Disney's decision to devote a whole land in Animal Kingdom to this stupid movie is really suspect.

Over on the official Disney Parks Blog, people are going gah gah over the photo and video.

Big whoop, it's some fluorescent stuff that glows under a black light.

Pardon me, but we've already seen that a few times in the parks.

Okay, I'm going to show my inner Nerd here. More and more of the fantasy and animation genres are "borrowing" from Japanese Anime - specifically Hayao Miyazaki movies. Kung Fu Panda, Cameron's Avatar, even Disney with "Big Hero 6". If you watch Miyazaki's "Howl's Moving Castle" and then watch Disney's "UP", you will see quite a few similarities.

I see the draw for Avatar land (Pandora) being greater for non-americans, not those of us who cut their teeth on classic Disney and the Star Wars genres. The floating islands in Pandora are in a LOT of Japanese animation and anime. They would come in droves....so when you see it as drawing from the non-domestic market, it makes sense for the investment.

I liked Avatar - but it is a bit Hard Core Sci Fi for most folks - even so, I'd MUCH rather see a Star Wars Land - Nerd mask going back on.
